  • Publication number: 20190295903
Abstract: A method is provided for area-selective deposition on a semiconductor workpiece using an integrated sequence of processing steps executed on a common manufacturing platform hosting film-forming modules, etching modules, and transfer modules. A workpiece having a target surface of a first material an non-target surface of a second material different than the first material is received into the platform. An additive material is selectively deposited on the workpiece with the additive material forming on the target surface at a higher deposition rate than on the non-target surface, followed by etching to expose the non-target surface. The integrated sequence of processing steps is executed within the platform without leaving the controlled environment and the transfer modules are used to transfer the workpiece between the processing modules while maintaining the workpiece within the controlled environment.

  • Publication number: 20190210279
Abstract: A three-dimensional (3-D) printer includes build and support material development stations positioned to transfer layers of build and support materials to an intermediate transfer surface. The intermediate transfer surface transfers a layer of the build and support materials to a platen each time the platen contacts the intermediate transfer surface. A sensor detects the thickness of the layer on the platen, and a mechanical planer is positioned to contact and level the layer on the platen as the platen moves past the mechanical planer. Additionally, a feedback loop is electrically connected to the sensor and the mechanical planer. The mechanical planer adjusts the amount of the build material and the support material removed from the layer based on the thickness of the layer on the platen, as determined by the sensor.

  • Publication number: 20190055153
Abstract: A fluid bearing for directing optical fibers during manufacturing is presented. The fluid bearing provides a flow of fluid to levitate and direct an optical fiber along a process pathway. The optical fiber is situated in a fiber slot and subjected to an upward force from fluid flowing from an inner radial position of the fiber slot past the optical fiber to an outer radial position of the fiber slot. The levitating force of fluid acting on the optical fiber is described by a convex force curve, according to which the upward levitating force on the optical fiber increases as the optical fiber moves deeper in the slot. Better stability in the positioning of the optical fiber in the fiber slot is achieved and contact of the optical fiber with solid surfaces of the fluid bearing is avoided. Various fluid bearing structures for achieving a convex force curve are described.
