The three-dimensional photonic crystal comprises an elastomeric, auxetic material and configured to provide a predetermined optical bandgap. The actuator is coupled to the three-dimensional photonic crystal and is configured to compress the three-dimensional photonic crystal. When the actuator compresses the three-dimensional photonic crystal, the three-dimensional photonic crystal shifts from reflecting light in a first wavelength range to light in a second wavelength range.

    Abstract: In an example, a chip-scale atomic clock physics package is provided. This chip-scale atomic clock physics package includes a body defining a cavity, and a first scaffold mounted in the cavity. A laser is mounted on the first surface of the first scaffold. A second scaffold is also mounted in the cavity. The second scaffold is disposed such that the first surface of the second scaffold is facing the first scaffold. A first photodetector is mounted on the first surface of the second scaffold. A vapor cell is mounted on the first surface of the second scaffold. A waveplate is also included, wherein the laser, waveplate, first photodetector, and vapor cell are disposed such that a beam from the laser can propagate through the waveplate and the vapor cell and be detected by the first photodetector. A lid is also included for covering the cavity.

    Abstract: The slab edge forming and insulating system includes edge members and support braces. The edge members include an elongated shell having an upright portion with an insulated inside surface, an upper portion and a lower portion. Each of the upper and lower portions have formed edges. Open cross sectioned support braces having upper and lower formed edges for engaging the formed edges of the elongated shell are fixed to a footing and connected to the edge members. The edge members form and insulate the edges of the poured concrete of the slab while the open cross sectioned support braces receive the poured concrete of the slab and thus anchor the edge members to the edge of the slab.

    Abstract: A longitude finder for locating the longitude on the earth of a defined location at which the user of the device is positioned. The device includes a reflective surface for viewing an image of one body in the solar system, such as the moon or a planet, while directly observing another body such as the north star. One specific form of the device is a mirror having side panels secured perpendicular to the mirror in parallel spaced relation to permit the user to directly view the north star above an image in the mirror of the moon or a defined planet. The other form of the device includes a sphere such as made of glass with side panels and handles for supporting this sphere whereby the first body in the solar system such as the north star is observed directly and a first reflection of the moon or a planet is seen in the outer surface of the sphere and a second reflection from the inner surface of the sphere while directly observing the north star in vertical alignment with the reflections.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to improvements in firing and cocking mechanism of a breach loading firearm. This invention utilizes a substantially massive pin block disposed in a horizontal track between two counter biasing springs, the main spring and the counter spring. A firing pin extends from the chamber end of the pin block. When the cocked pin block is released, the main spring drives it toward the chamber and the momentum of the moving pin block carries the extended firing into contact with the primer of the cartridge despite the resistance of the counter spring. Lowering the breechblock allows a spring loaded ejector plate to spring backward and pull the spent cartridge casing from the chamber. In addition the ejector plate strikes a projection of the pin block and drives the pin block back to the cocked position. An extension of a lever which operates the action returns the ejector plate to the chamber so that the breechblock is able to rise unobstructed.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a repeating firearm having a vertically slidable block mounted behind the barrel. The upper portion of the block carries a firing pin, and one or more cartridge holding chambers are provided in the lower portion. A cartridge ejector is mounted at the rear of the barrel. The block is slidable between a lower position permitting operation of the ejector, an intermediate position aligning the firing pin with the barrel, and one or more upper positions aligning said cartridge holding chambers with the barrel for transferring cartridges from the chambers to the barrel for firing. In one embodiment a tubular magazine is provided beneath the barrel for holding additional cartridges end-to-end and means are provided for transferring cartridges from the magazine to a cartridge holding chamber in the block, for ultimate transfer therefrom into the barrel.
