  • Publication number: 20040146454
Abstract: This invention relates generally to a improvement in a process for the purification of fluoroxy compounds, such as bis(fluoroxy)difluoromethane and fluoroxytrifluoromethane produced by the fluorination of carbon oxides. The improvement in effecting purification of the fluoroxy compounds is effected by initially selectively removing the fluorine by contacting with a crystalline zeolite and then removing the carbon oxide by selective adsorption.

  • Patent number: 6524990
Abstract: Active fluoride catalysts that are useful in producing electrophilic fluorination agents; especially useful in producing BDM from the reaction of fluorine with carbon dioxide and FTM from the reaction of fluorine with carbonyl fluoride. The fluoride catalyst comprises a mixture of two or more fluorides selected from a transition metal fluoride, an alkali metal fluoride and/or an alkaline earth metal fluoride. Alternately, the fluoride catalyst is one or more fluorides, such as alkali metal fluorides, alkaline earth metal fluorides, and/or transition metal fluorides, deposited on an inert support.

  • Publication number: 20020156321
Abstract: The invention provides an improved process for preparing bis(fluoroxy)difluoro-methane (BDM) by continuously reacting F2 with CO2 in a reactor containing a fluorination catalyst (e.g., CsF), wherein the process is conducted at a pressure above atmospheric pressure. The process provides BDM of very high purity and very low residual F2.

  • Patent number: 6365246
Abstract: An economical means of safely “containing” or “packaging” commercial electrophilic fluorination agents whereby these agents are readily stored and transported in a package, typically without loss of “F+” activity, and in a form which is readily and directly useable, i.e., in solution or a slurry. Importantly, the solution/slurry medium provides a tremendous safety margin for storage and transportation since the solution medium has an enormous ability to absorb heat (due to the latent heat of vaporization of the liquid) relative to the contained active fluorination agent.

  • Patent number: 6307105
Abstract: A process for providing an &agr;-fluorinated-&bgr;-dicarbonyl includes electrophilically fluorinating a &bgr;-dicarbonyl with bis-fluoroxydifluoromethane in the presence of an acid to provide the &agr;-monofluorinated-&bgr;-dicarbonyl. The acid is preferably hydrofluoric acid. Preferred &bgr;-dicarbonyls include methyl-3-oxopentanoate and ethyl-4,4,4-trifluoroacetoacetate. The process can limit radical impurity byproducts to no more than 4% in some cases, and less than 0.5% in other cases. Theoretical yields of 95% &agr;-monofluorinated-&bgr;-dicarbonyl are possible in some cases.

  • Patent number: 6270843
Abstract: A process includes substituting a substituent on a substrate. The process includes reacting a salt of an anionic form of the substituent with an electrophilic fluorination agent to provide an electrophile containing a cationic form of the substituent. The electrophile is then electrophilically substituted on the substrate. In some aspects of the process, the substrate can be an aromatic or a non-aromatic. The process can be used for a variety of reactions having electrophilic mechanisms, including halogenation, thiocyanation and nitration.
