Patent number: 7628230Abstract: An earth boring bit has three cones, each cone being mounted for rotation about a cone axis while the bit rotates about a bit axis. An outer row and an adjacent row of cutting elements are integrally formed on each of the cones. Each of the cutting elements of the adjacent row on each of the cones has a crest extending perpendicular to a direction of rotation of the cone. Annular spaces are located between the outer row and the adjacent row on each of the cones. The annular space on one cone has a width that is less than the annular spaces on the other cones. The width of the narrowest annular space is greater than the width of the crests of the adjacent row.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 2005Date of Patent: December 8, 2009Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Rudolf C. Pessier, James L. Overstreet, Robert J. Buske, Don Q. Nguyen

Patent number: 7621345Abstract: An earth-boring bit has a high density row on one of its cones. Each cone has a nose area and a gage area with a heel row of teeth at the gage area. One of the cones has a farther intermediate row of teeth and another one of the cones has a closer intermediate row of teeth. The remaining cone has a high density row of teeth, which is located closer to the axis of rotation of the bit than the farther intermediate row and farther from the axis of rotation of the bit than the closer intermediate row. The high density row has a smaller pitch between crests of the teeth than the closer and farther intermediate rows. The smaller pitch provides more teeth in the high density row than in the closer intermediate row and the farther intermediate row.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 2007Date of Patent: November 24, 2009Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Karlos B. Cepeda, Robert J. Buske, James L. Overstreet, Rolf C. Pessier

Publication number: 20090260890Abstract: The harmful effects of tracking are reduced for a drill bit having roller cones with at least one of the outermost rows of active teeth containing one or more teeth having a height that does not extend to the height of at least one of the outermost rows on another roller cone on the bit. The crest on this tooth may have a length in a circumferential direction that is wider than an overall width of the tooth in the outer to inner direction. The invention may be used on any cutter row, not just the outermost row. The design may be used on a different roller cone or row, or more than one cutter row. The anti-tracking feature may be located between the leading and trailing edges of the tooth on one or more roller cones.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 17, 2009Publication date: October 22, 2009Applicant: BAKER HUGHES INCORPORATEDInventors: Robert J. Publication number: 20090218140Abstract: A reamer bit for use in earth boring operations comprising a body, four cutter mounts, rolling cutters on each mount, and cutting elements disposed on each cutter arranged so adjacent cutting swaths formed by the bit are created by cutting elements on cones of oppositely disposed cutter mounts. The swaths are generally curvilinear, wherein the outermost swaths are formed by cutting element rows on the outer portion of the cutters. The reamer bit can further comprise a pilot bit.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2008Publication date: September 3, 2009Applicant: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Rudolf Carl Pessier, Scott Allan Young, Robert J. Buske, Mark Phillip Blackman, Gregory L. Ricks

Publication number: 20090159341Abstract: An earth boring drill bit comprising cones, each cone having rows of inserts, where the inserts are in the form of a pyramid with four sides. The insert includes ridges at the juncture of each adjacent side. The ridges extend to the top of the insert and meet at a crest. Oppositely disposed ridges on the insert lie substantially in the same plane, thereby forming two planes intersecting on the crest. The two planes are substantially perpendicular. The inserts are arranged on the cone such that one plane is substantially parallel with the insert row, and the other is substantially parallel with the cone axis.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2008Publication date: June 25, 2009Applicant: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Rudolf Carl Pessier, Scott Allan Young, Robert J. Patent number: 7484577Abstract: An earth-boring bit has bit legs having hardfacing covering the majority of the outer surface. The hardfacing may have gaps at an area surrounding the ball plug and an area around a fixture dimple. The hardfacing may be multi-layer, with the layers differing in composition. Recesses may be located at the leading and trailing edges of the supporting metal so as to provide a thicker area of hardfacing at these corners. The supporting metal of the outer surface of the bit leg may also have an upper cylindrical section and a lower tapered section. The hardfacing has a constant outer diameter but will taper in thickness in the lower tapered section. The thickness of the hardfacing may also vary in a circumferential direction with a greater thickness over at least one of the corners.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2007Date of Patent: February 3, 2009Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: James L.
