  • Patent number: 4961498
Abstract: A molded two-piece suture package is disclosed which encloses and defines an oval channel in which sutures may be wound. The oval channel has two semicircular end sections connected by straight side sections. An opening in the channel is provided at the juncture of a straight section and an end section, permitting sutures to be withdrawn from the channel at the end of a straight section. In a preferred embodiment the interior wall of the channel is formed by alternating engaging sections formed in the respective package pieces. To prevent the wrapped suture from becoming entrapped when the two pieces are engaged, the top and bottom of the channel is alternately raised and lowered in alignment with the alternating wall sections, causing the wound suture to bridge those areas where it may become entrapped between the mating package pieces. Entrapment of the suture end at the outside of the channel is prevented by alternately recessing the outer wall of the channel.

  • Patent number: 4946043
Abstract: An improved retainer for surgical sutures is provided which includes a suture retaining compartment comprising a suture winding panel with the panel having a pair of holding panels foldably connected to longitudinal edges of the suture winding panel. The holding panels are foldably connected to the winding panel by at least three gussets formed at the edges of the suture winding panel. The gussets at the ends of the foldable connection prevent frictional compression of the wound suture at the corners of the retaining compartment, and the central gussets or gussets engender a convex curvature to the holding panels, thereby creating a low friction volumetric compartment which retains the suture in place. The suture retainer also includes a needle holding means mounted at the intended location of the needle.

  • Patent number: 4412617
Abstract: A package for a plurality of sterile, dry, hydrolyzable, surgical ligating clips. The package comprises a disposable means for holding the ligating clips in a spaced apart relationship. The clips are disposed in the holding means to provide an area around each clip for access thereto. The clips themselves have a pair of legs which are connected at their proximal ends by a narrowed resilient hinge portion. The hinge portion of the clip is more sensitive to hydrolysis than the remainder of the clip. The package also includes means, for example, pre dried paper for permanently removing moisture from the area around the clips. The disposable holding means, the clips, and the moisture removing means are wrapped by impermeable wrappers whereby the final package maintains the resiliency of the hinge portion of the clips over an extended shelf life period.

  • Patent number: 4317451
Abstract: A one-piece, self-locking, molded plastic staple useful as a tissue fixation device in surgical procedures. The staple has opposed, pointed, L-shaped legs secured to a horizontal bridging member. Each leg has an extension which is engaged by a locking bar extending between the extensions when the staple is closed by forcing the legs through a 90.degree. arc. The staples may be extruded or molded of absorbable or nonabsorbable polymeric materials.

  • Patent number: 4249656
Abstract: An improved package for needled sutures comprising a folded suture retainer wherein a coiled suture is contained between two folded panels while the needle is contained between two adjacent folded panels. A gusset along the foldline between the needle retention panels and the suture retention panels provides a channel for the length of suture traversing the foldline and facilitates the easy withdrawal of the suture from between the panels of the folded retainer.

  • Patent number: 4126221
Abstract: A package for multiple strands of surgical sutures which provides for delivery of individual suture strands. The several sutures are contained within a single compartment of the package, with each suture being individually wound in the form of a coil comprising a series of convolutions, each convolution being laterally displaced from adjacent convolutions and disposed in sequence over the length of the suture. Each individual suture within the package compartment is laterally displaced from adjacent sutures in a contiguous, partially overlapping relationship. The desired suture coil configuration and positioning within the package compartment is conveniently obtained by sequentially winding individual sutures around two vertical winding pins in an upwardly spiraling pattern, with successive loops of each suture and successive sutures being displaced laterally along the pins.

  • Patent number: 4089409
Abstract: A package for multiple strands of surgical sutures which provides for delivery of individual suture strands. The sutures are aligned into a bundle of substantially parallel strands and the bundle is wound in the form of a coil comprising a series of contiguous, overlapping convolutions, each convolution being laterally displaced from adjacent convolutions and disposed in sequence from one end of the suture to the other. The desired suture coil configuration is conveniently obtained by winding the suture bundle around two vertical winding pins in an upwardly spiraling pattern with successive loops being displaced laterally along the pins. The wound suture is packaged in a suture folder which is adapted to maintain the suture bundle in its wound configuration with one end of the suture bundle extending from the folder whereby individual suture strands may be grasped and withdrawn from the package.
