  • Publication number: 20090280041
Abstract: A process is disclosed for the preferential conversion to 2-butene of a stream containing C4 compounds including 1-butene and 2-butene. The process involves mixing the C4 stream with a first hydrogen stream to form a feed stream, hydroisomerizing the feed stream in the presence of a first hydroisomerization catalyst in order to convert at least a portion of the 1-butene to 2-butene, thereby producing a hydroisomerization effluent, passing the hydroisomerization effluent through a fractionation column to form a top stream comprising isobutane and isobutylene and a bottoms stream comprising 2-butene, withdrawing a recycle stream from said fractionation column at a location above the feed point at which the weight ratio of 1-butene to 2-butene is high, and combining the recycle stream with at least one of the C4 stream and the feed stream upstream from the hydroisomerization catalyst. A corresponding apparatus also is disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20090029300
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method of controlling the air to fuel ratio in a burner containing a venturi assembly. The venturi includes an air inlet, a primary fuel inlet with a converging section, a throat portion downstream from the converging section, a diverging section downstream from the throat portion, an outlet, and a secondary gas inlet disposed downstream from the converging section and upstream from the outlet. The method comprises introducing fuel into the fuel inlet, receiving air through the air inlet by inspiration, and feeding a gas through the secondary gas inlet, the flow rate and content of the gas fed through the secondary gas inlet being selected to result in a desired air to fuel ratio through the outlet. A method of firing a heater, a burner, a furnace and firing control systems also are disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20080286706
Abstract: A furnace, firing pattern and method of operating a heater that employs a combination of hearth burners and wall burners for the cracking of hydrocarbons is described. The firing pattern leads to improvements in the uniformity of the coil metal temperatures and vertical heat flux profiles over the firebox elevation. The hearth burners operate with a stoichiometric excess of air while the wall burners operate with less than the stoichiometric amount of air.

  • Patent number: 7271307
Abstract: The present development relates to a modification of the Houdry process for the dehydrogenation of aliphatic hydrocarbons, whereby the dehydrogenation cycle is extended, or lengthened, and hydrogen gas is added into the reaction. The combination of the extended cycle with the hydrogen introduction results in a surprising stabilization of the production rate in the dehydrogenation process. The hydrogen gas may be introduced through a recycle step. The process of the present development is demonstrated for the dehydrogenation of propane to propylene.

  • Patent number: 7214841
Abstract: In order to maximize the production of propylene when the external supply of ethylene is limited, the C4 cut from a hydrocarbon cracking process is first subjected to autometathesis prior to any isobutylene removal and without any ethylene addition. This favors the reactions which produce propylene and pentenes. The ethylene and propylene produced are then removed leaving a stream of the C4's and heavier components. The C5 and heavier components are then removed leaving a mixture of 1-butene, 2-butene, isobutylene, and iso- and normal butanes. The isobutylene is next removed preferably by a catalytic distillation hydroisomerization de-isobutyleneizer. The isobutylene-free C4 stream is then mixed with the product ethylene removed from the autometathesis product together with any fresh external ethylene needed and subjected to conventional metathesis producing additional propylene.

  • Patent number: 6875901
Abstract: An olefin isomerization process employs a basic metal oxide catalyst, such as magnesium oxide, which retains at least about 85 percent of its initial activity for at least about 168 hours of on-stream time. The catalyst is preferably a high purity magnesium oxide. The olefin isomerization process and catalyst described herein are advantageously used for the production of a terminal olefin such as 1-butene from an internal olefin such as 2-butene.

  • Patent number: 6777582
Abstract: A C3 to C6 hydrogen cut from a cracking unit is processed for the conversion of olefins to propylene and hexene via autometathesis. The autometathesis of a mixed normal butenes feed in the presence of a metathesis catalyst operates without any ethylene in the feed mix to the metathesis reactor. Some fraction of the 2-butene feed may be isomerized to 1-butene and the 1-butene formed plus the 1-butene in the feed react rapidly with the 2-butene to form propylene and 2-pentene. The feed to the reactor also includes the recycle of the 2-pentene formed in the reactor with unreacted butenes to simultaneously form additional propylene and hexene. In one embodiment, some or all of the 3-hexene formed in the reaction is isomerized to 1-hexene. In another embodiment, some portion of the 3-hexene produced in the main metathesis reaction is reacted with ethylene to produce 1-butene without the need for superfractionation.

  • Patent number: 6759562
Abstract: Presented is an improvement to a previous invention involving the catalytic hydrogenation of the C2 to C5 and heavier acetylenes and dienes in a thermally cracked feed stream without significantly hydrogenating the C2 and C3 olefins. The improvement involves the use of a fixed bed hydrogenation reactor system in combination with a modified version of the catalytic distillation unit used in the prior art. The modification to the catalytic distillation unit involves improvement of the liquid recycle scheme. The fixed bed reactors combined with the modified catalytic distillation allows for 100% conversion of acetylene and helps to maintain high conversion of the other dienes and acetylenes with no ethylene or propylene conversion under a variety of conditions. These condition variations include but are not limited to the feed diene and acetylene composition, the mol % carbon monoxide in the feed, and catalyst deactivation.

  • Patent number: 6727396
Abstract: Ethylene and hexene-1 are produced from butene-1 by metathesis of butene-1 and isomerization of the hexene-3 produced therein to hexene-1. The initial starting material is a mixed butene stream wherein butene-1 is isomerized to butene-2 with isobutylene being separated therefrom, followed by isomerization of butene-2 to butene-1, with the butene-1 being the feed to the metathesis.

  • Patent number: 6685893
Abstract: A pyrolysis heater particularly for the cracking of hydrocarbons in the production of olefins has a burner arrangement in the firebox which directly heats the hearth of the firebox such that it becomes a radiant surface. This improves the heat flux in the lower portion of the firebox and produces a more uniform vertical heat flux profile over the firebox elevation. The base burners may fire horizontally across the hearth or may comprise porous ceramic burners as a part of the hearth. The base burners operate along with vertically firing hearth burners and optional wall burners in the upper portion of the firebox.
