  • Publication number: 20150354457
Abstract: A splitter for protecting parts of a gas turbine engine is provided. The splitter segregates the flow of hot and cold gases into the air bleed manifold around the high compressor section to reduce maximum temperatures and minimize the temperature gradients of engine parts, especially inner case flanges The splitter divides the air bleed manifold into an annular inner cavity and an outer cavity. The splitter directs relatively cold air from the high compressor bleed ducts into the inner cavity and relatively hot air from the aft hub into the outer cavity, away from the inner case flanges.

  • Patent number: 8998563
Abstract: An active clearance control system for a gas turbine engine includes a structural member that is configured to be arranged near a blade tip. A plenum includes first and second walls respectively providing first and second cavities. The first wall includes impingement holes. The plenum is arranged over the structural member. A fluid source is fluidly connected to the second cavity to provide an impingement cooling flow from the second cavity through the impingement holes to the first cavity onto the structural member. A method includes the steps of providing a conditioning fluid to an outer cavity of a plenum providing an impingement cooling flow through impingement holes from an inner wall of the plenum to an inner cavity, directing the impingement cooling flow onto a structural member, and conditioning a temperature of the structural member with the impingement cooling flow to control a blade tip clearance.

Abstract: An apparatus for use in a tissue ablation procedure includes a base, a fluid delivery tube coupled to the base, a first lever rotatably coupled to the base, the first lever having a first end biased to press against a portion of the fluid delivery tube to thereby close a lumen within the fluid delivery tube, and a second end, and a securing mechanism for securing the base relative to an ablation device. An ablation system includes an ablation device having an electrode, a fluid delivery tube coupled to the ablation device, and a control for simultaneously activating the electrode and opening the fluid delivery tube. A method of performing tissue ablation includes operating a control to activate an electrode, thereby delivering ablation energy to target tissue, wherein the step of operating the control also causes fluid to be delivered to the target tissue.

  • Patent number: 8652022
Abstract: A method of treating a region of diseased tissue using a probe is disclosed. A probe cannula is introduced into the tissue of the patient until a distal end of the cannula is located at or proximate to the treatment region. A plurality of electrodes are then deployed from the distal end of the cannula into the treatment region. Energy (e.g., radiofrequency energy) is then delivered through the plurality of electrodes to the tissue. The cannula is then secured to an immobile object external to the patient. The treatment region is irradiated with a therapeutically effective dose of an ionizing radiation while the plurality of electrodes remain at least partially advanced within the treatment region and while the cannula remains secured to the immobile object.

Abstract: According to an aspect of the invention, an indwelling catheter is provided which comprises a catheter shaft. The catheter either comprises a light source or is adapted to receive light from a light source, and is configured such that light is transmitted from the light source into the catheter shaft. Moreover, the catheter shaft is formed of a polymeric material that transmits a quantity of light from the light source that is effective to inactivate microorganisms on a surface of the catheter shaft upon activation of the light source. For example, the light may inactivate the microorganisms directly or in conjunction with a photosensitizer. According to another aspect of the invention, a sterilization method is provided, which comprises activating the light source while the catheter is inserted in a subject.
