Publication number: 20100112528Abstract: A simulator is disclosed for training a responder to react in situations that have the potential for the use of force when encountering a main character, such as a person, whom a police officer might encounter during a routine stop and search. The simulator is equipped with natural language recognition and processing such that the main character reacts to voice commands from the trainee. In addition, feedback from the weapon and the weapon aimpoint alters the behavior of the main character. The dynamic scenario architecture is responsive to the language and weapon and interacts with the main character to affect the main character's behavior. The main character is equipped with a behavioral model to vary behavior in a given scenario.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 9, 2009Publication date: May 6, 2010Inventors: Tyson Alan Griffin, Kevin Robert Geib, Lisa Solbra Ouakil, Robert Thomson McCormack, Asuncion Lacson Simmonds, Courtney Kathleen McNamara

Publication number: 20080191485Abstract: The present invention relates to a wave energy conversion device (1), for use in relatively shallow water, which has a base portion (2) for anchoring to the bed of a body of water (6) and an upstanding flap portion (8) pivotally connected (12) to the base portion. The flap portion is biased to the vertical and oscillates, backwards and forwards about the vertical in response to wave motion acting on its faces. Power extraction means extract energy from the movement of the flap portion. When the base portion (2) is anchored to the bed of a body of water (6) with the flap portion (8) facing the wave motion, the base portion (2) and the flap portion (8) extend vertically through at least the entire depth of the water, to present a substantially continuous surface to the wave motion throughout the full depth of water from the wave crest to the sea bed. A plurality of devices can be interconnected to form one system. The distance between the plurality of flaps is dependent on the wavelength.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 15, 2006Publication date: August 14, 2008Inventors: Trevor John Whittaker, Allan Robert Thomson, Michael David Crowley

Publication number: 20060218512Abstract: A method for designing a computational device or circuit having one or more desired characteristics, preferably input and/or output characteristics. The method involves using an inner, iterative search that is preferably used within one or more genetic operators. As a first step, one of a population of computational circuits or devices is selected. Once this is done a point in the selected circuit or device is chosen and characterised in terms of the circuit inputs and/or outputs. A parameter or characteristic associated with the selected point is then modified and the point is re-characterised. This is repeated to provide characterisations for a plurality of modified versions of the circuit. Then, the circuit that has characteristics closest to the desired characteristics is identified and added to the population of circuits, and the inner search loop is repeated for another one of the population.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 29, 2004Publication date: September 28, 2006Applicant: University Court of the University of EdinburghInventors: Tughrul Arslan, Robert Graham, Robert Thomson

Patent number: 5880954Abstract: A safety-related control system (SRCS) designed to safeguard personnel operating hazardous production equipment. The SRCS integrates the safety-related part of a machine into one homogenous system for the purpose of increasing safety. In so doing, the SRCS monitors the machine, the operator, and itself for safe operation. The SRCS utilizes a non-material barrier to sense the intrusion of a person's body into a hazardous area of a machine. The SRCS uses machine feedback and/or operator interface to determine whether a hazardous condition is present. If such condition is present, the hazard is rendered harmless by the time the intruding body member can reach the potential danger area. The system includes separable means for stopping motion of the moving parts of the equipment, starting movement of the movable parts, and detecting faults in sections of the system.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1995Date of Patent: March 9, 1999Inventors: Robert Thomson, Frederick Thomson

Patent number: 5821077Abstract: A DNA sequence encoding the CarR gene product or a homologue or variant thereof which, on expression in bacteria, is capable of activating gene expression, especially of a gene coding for a carbapenem antibiotic. A polypeptide coded for by such DNA.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 1996Date of Patent: October 13, 1998Assignee: University of WarwickInventors: George Peacock Copland Salmond, Matthew Thomas Geoffrey Holden, Anthony Richard John Cox, Nicholas Robert Thomson, Simon James McGowan

Patent number: 5559664Abstract: A photodetection system and related circuitry designed to sense the intrusion of an opaque object in a light plane. Upon sensing the intrusion, the system quickly initiates a machine-stopping sequence prior to the opaque object coming into contact with the machine while that machine is operating. The system comprises a SYSTEM microcontroller and a WATCHDOG microcontroller, both of which operate an output control device of the light curtain switch of the invention, wherein the output control device comprises a plurality of electromechanical relays. Both microcontrollers also perform system hardware and software integrity checks. Furthermore, the WATCHDOG microcontroller evaluates the performance of the SYSTEM microcontroller by transmitting a false intrusion signal to a photosource, determining whether the false signal has been detected, and then verifying that the SYSTEM microcontroller has initiated the machine-stopping sequence.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1993Date of Patent: September 24, 1996Assignee: Frost Controls, Inc.Inventors: James Dogul, Sandip Sarkar, Frederick Thomson, Robert Thomson

Patent number: 5515906Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for pneumatically controlling the velocity of flow of liquid metal from a tundish into a continuous casting machine through a nozzle. A chamber encloses the nozzle outlet, and at least a portion of the continuous casting machine, and a pressurized gas is supplied to the chamber. The flow velocity of the liquid metal at the nozzle outlet is controlled by controlling the gas pressure in the chamber in response to the level of the liquid metal in the tundish, and the measured atmospheric pressure acting on the liquid metal in the tundish.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1994Date of Patent: May 14, 1996Assignee: Her Majesty in Right of Canada as represented by the Minister of Energy, Mines and ResourcesInventors: Robert Thomson, Elhachmi Es-Sadiqi, James Barry

Patent number: 4792449Abstract: This invention relates to a method for administering drugs. In particular a lipophilic drug is solubilized by a food, such as chocolate, and admixed with an oil-based carrier. The lipid soluble drug is thus conveyed to the gastrointestinal tract. Because this type of food is digested readily, the drug is absorbed as intended, and the dose is not subject to day-to-day variations.Type: GrantFiled: January 28, 1987Date of Patent: December 20, 1988Assignee: Baxter Travenol Laboratories, Inc.Inventors: Robert K.
