  • Publication number: 20130160998
Abstract: Compositions of lost circulation materials are provided that are useful for identifying the location of fluid loss in a wellbore. The compositions include additives which enhance a property of the composition such that they can be detected by an LWD or MWD tool capable of measuring the property when the composition is deployed in a region of loss, and can be distinguished by the LWD or MWD tool from the formation and mud fluid. Methods are also provided for using the composition to detect the location of fluid loss and for controlling the loss of fluid from the wellbore. The methods involve deploying the compositions in loss regions by adding the compositions to drilling mud, and measuring a property of the compositions using an LWD or MWD tool.

  • Publication number: 20130032412
Abstract: A drill bit assembly has a bit head and a pin body. The bit head comprises a cutting end, an opposite connecting end with an engagement section, and a feature facing the connecting end. The pin body comprises a tubular body with an axial bore therethrough, a connecting end with an engagement section and a feature facing the connecting end. The drill bit assembly is manufactured by positioning the pin body connecting end with the bit head connecting end such that the pin body and bit head engagement sections overlap with a gap therebetween, and the pin body and bit head features are aligned; injecting a thermoplastic or other connecting material in liquid form between the bit head and pin body engagement sections and into the gap; and solidifying the thermoplastic or other connecting material such that the bit head and pin body are mechanically coupled together at their connecting ends and their features are securely aligned.

  • Publication number: 20120111561
Abstract: A method detects at least one phase of multiphase borehole fluids within a borehole. The method has a step of providing coiled tubing connected to a top end of a bottom hole assembly having a sensor configured to detect a property associated with the multiphase borehole fluids. Further, the method has a step of positioning the sensor adjacent to a first phase of the multiphase borehole fluids by rotating the bottom hole assembly or a portion of the bottom hole assembly. Moreover, the method has the steps of detecting a first measurement with the sensor as the sensor rotates and determining a fractional amount of at least one phase of the multiphase borehole fluids.

  • Patent number: 8020634
Abstract: An apparatus for supporting a retrievable downhole component within a drill collar includes a sleeve that is positionable about the downhole component and is mounted within the drill collar. The sleeve is adapted to limit the lateral movement of the downhole component. The sleeve includes a series of fins or is lined with an energy absorbing material which protects the component from shock and vibration while at the same time enables the component to be retrieved should the drill string become stuck in the borehole.

  • Publication number: 20110120725
Abstract: A directional drilling system, a drilling hammer and a fluid flow telemetry modulator use a plurality of magnets arranged to convert rotational motion into reciprocating linear motion. Various types of motor can provide rotational motion to a part of the magnets and various linkages and other devices can cause steering or operation of a modulator valve. A torsional drilling hammer uses a plurality of magnets arranged to convert reciprocating linear motion into reciprocating rotational motion. A motor and linkage drives the linearly moving part of the magnets, and the rotating part provides torsional impact be striking the linearly moving part of the magnets.

  • Publication number: 20100018770
Abstract: A technique facilitates drilling in a wide variety of applications and environments. The technique utilizes a coiled tubing bottom hole assembly constructed with a sensor system that provides the ability to steer a borehole within a reservoir. An orienter is connected to a top end of the bottom hole assembly to provide rotational movement of the bottom hole assembly. The orienter can be designed to provide continuous and bidirectional rotational movement of the coiled tubing bottom hole assembly. A telemetry system is provided to enable high data rate telemetry between the orienter and a surface location as well as communication between the bottom hole assembly and the orienter.

  • Publication number: 20090107724
Abstract: A wellbore formation sample acquisition and analysis instrument includes an annular drill bit configured to couple to one end of a drill string. The bit defines a passageway extending from a cutting face thereof to an exterior surface at a longitudinally spaced apart position from the cutting face. The instrument includes at least one sensor configured to measure a selected parameter of a sample of subsurface formation urged into the passageway by action of the cutting face against subsurface formations. Samples of the subsurface formations are ejected from the exterior surface end of the passageway by the samples entering the cutting face end thereof.

  • Publication number: 20090095474
Abstract: A method of fracturing a formation while drilling a wellbore includes the steps of: providing a bottomhole assembly (“BHA”) having a reamer positioned above a pilot hole assembly; connecting the BHA to a drill string; actuating the BHA to drill a first wellbore section with the reamer and to drill a pilot hole with the pilot hole assembly; hydraulically sealing the pilot hole from the first wellbore section; and fracturing the formation proximate the pilot hole.

  • Publication number: 20070204645
Abstract: A shipping container for cooling a product contained therein is provided. The shipping container includes a frozen material which is mostly insulated from the central chamber of the shipping container. Cool air circulates from the frozen material, to the central chamber of the shipping container. The recirculation of air over the frozen material maintains the central chamber of the shipping container at a predetermined temperature over time. Optionally, a heat exchanger, such as a fan or baffle, can be provided to further enhance the recirculation of the air through the shipping container.
