  • Publication number: 20070193983
Abstract: A method of generating an electrical arc includes steps of providing a first electrode and a second electrode, determining a dielectric strength of a gap region between the electrodes, determining a desired dielectric strength change based on the determined dielectric strength, injecting an amount of ions into the gap region, wherein the amount of ions is controlled based on the desired dielectric strength change, and providing a voltage to the first electrode, the voltage causing the electrical arc to be formed between the first electrode and the second electrode. Preferably, the amount of ions injected into the gap region causes the dielectric strength of the gap region to be changed by an amount substantially equal to the desired dieletric strength change. The method may be implemented in an apparatus employing an electrician arc, such as, without limitation, a fusion splicer or an apparatus for preparing an optical fiber.

  • Publication number: 20070153483
Abstract: A thermal management device for a circuit substrate having at least a first heat generating component and at least a second heat generating component, the thermal management device includes a first thermal spreader and a second thermal spreader. The second thermal spreader is mountable to the circuit substrate to thermally couple with the second heat generating component. Additionally, the second thermal spreader is adapted to couple to the first thermal spreader to thermally couple the first thermal spreader to the first heat generating component when the second thermal spreader is mounted to the circuit substrate. The thermal management device also includes a bias device that is coupled to the first thermal spreader and the second thermal spreader and is adapted to maintain the thermal coupling between the first thermal spreader and the first heat generating component when the second thermal spreader is mounted to the circuit substrate.

  • Publication number: 20070045249
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing the gap resistance between two electrodes, such as the electrodes used fusion splicing one optical fiber to another, by injecting negative ions into the gas or gasses that are located between the electrodes. As a result, the voltage that is required to cause dielectric breakdown and initiation of the electrical arc is drastically reduced.

  • Publication number: 20070047211
Abstract: A device to thermally couple a thermal management apparatus to at least one heat generating component of a circuit substrate includes at least a first portion that is adapted to couple to the thermal management apparatus, and at least a second portion that is adapted to couple to the thermal management apparatus. The first portion and the second portion may be symmetrically arranged relative to each other. The first portion and the second portion are adapted to thermally couple the thermal management apparatus to the heat generating component with a first spring bias. • Publication number: 20070031098
Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing an optical fiber includes generating a continuous or pulsed arc in a first area wherein the arc creates a plasma in one or more gasses in the first area. The method further includes positioning a portion of the fiber in a second area adjacent to and outside of the plasma region, wherein coating material that is present on the optical fiber portion is removed when the plasma is present. Alternatively, in the case of a pulsed arc, the optical fiber portion may be positioned at least partially within the plasma region. The positioning step may be performed prior to or subsequent to the arc generating step. The method and apparatus may be utilized in a system that also strips and cleaves optical fibers. Also, a method for reducing the gap resistance between two electrodes by injecting negative ions into the area between the electrodes.

  • Patent number: 7127534
Abstract: A method for managing read and write data congestion in a system for executing write and read data commands and having a buffer pool of blocks for temporarily storing read and write data is disclosed. Management of the buffer pool and the initiation of read and write commands ensures that free blocks are available to temporarily store read data arriving at a host bus adapter (HBA). If the currently available blocks would be substantially consumed by the total outstanding inbound read data requested, no more write data commands will be initiated. As inbound read data is received into the buffer pool and subsequently transferred out of the buffer pool to the initiator device, the blocks in the buffer pool are freed up. When the read data transfer is completed and sufficient buffer resources have been freed up, read and write data commands may resume.

  • Publication number: 20050241105
Abstract: The present invention uses a unique slide hinge, preferably mounted to the side of the exterior door for a storage compartment in a recreational vehicle. The hinge is particularly applicable for use with a trunk door on vehicles over 5,500 pounds gross vehicle weight. Unlike the more common piano hinges, the slide hinge provided by the present invention can be staked, i.e. “mechanically retained,” in an open orientation. For example, the hinge can be held in an orientation that forms a 90° angle between the door and the body of the recreational vehicle. The hinge also presents a low profile relative to the mounting surface when the hinge is in the open orientation.
