  • Patent number: 8068879
Abstract: Hardware not currently being used is re-oriented to a new purpose. Sensors on a personal communication device monitor the environment around the device. Based on an analysis of that monitoring, an appropriate visual message is shown on an outside display screen of the device. The visual message is targeted toward those around the device rather than to the device's user. In some embodiments, the monitoring devices include a camera and a microphone. Images taken by the camera are analyzed in an attempt to detect persons or objects around the user or to determine where the user is located. Captured speech is analyzed to determine topics of conversation. The results of these analyses are fed into a decision-making process that determines what visual messages would be appropriate. In one embodiment, the visual message is an advertisement.

  • Patent number: 8069313
Abstract: In one embodiment the present invention includes a method and system for managing cache invalidation. In one embodiment, connection information to a database in stored in an intermediate cache management module. If changes are made to objects in the database, the objects are invalidated in a local cache. The connection information is accessed and used to connect to the database by an invalidation listener. The invalidation listener may determine the changes so that the changes can be reflected in the cache. Embodiments of the present invention may be implemented across multiple nodes in a clustered environment for updating caches on different nodes in response to changes to data objects performed by other nodes.

  • Patent number: 8069250
Abstract: A one-way proxy system is provided that supports one-way analysis of a transport control protocol (TCP) data stream. The one-way proxy system is used to intercept a TCP data link between two respective TCP endpoints. A one-way analyzer such as a one-way content filter, virus scanner, or firewall may be used to analyze a TCP data stream that is intercepted by the one-way proxy system. The one way proxy system preserves TCP options and TCP properties associated with the TCP packets in the TCP data stream, so that an existing TCP session between the TCP endpoints can survive in the event of a hardware bypass operation. The one-way proxy has a low overhead because significant TCP processing of the TCP data stream is only required in one direction.

  • Publication number: 20110289524
Abstract: In a video delivery context, collection and analysis of viewing data can provide insight into viewer interaction with video and the Internet. The viewing data can be transmitted in a controlled manner to a data repository. The system can selectively target specific viewers/households to obtain viewing data, which can be combined with demographics, anonymized, and encrypted. Embodiments enable precision selection of media opportunities, by determining detailed characteristics associated with broadcasts including movement of audiences and specific viewer behavior, such as visits to websites on the Internet. The effective yield of broadcasts, including promotional spots and advertisements, can be determined and predicted based on concrete data at a level of detail down to individual viewers. Accordingly, embodiments enable improvement of the effectiveness and return on investment for programming, promotional spots, and advertisements.

  • Publication number: 20110286347
Abstract: In a communication system, user equipment (UE) conditionally performs uplink transmit diversity (ULTD) either by Switched Antenna Transmit Diversity (SATD) or Beamforming Transmit Diversity (BFTD) using a first antenna and a second antenna. Either a serving node or the UE determines that uplink transmit diversity is conditionally authorized. Either a serving node or the UE measures a value. The UE transmits using ULTD in response to determining that an enabling condition based on the value is satisfied. The UE can also disable uplink transmit diversity in response to determining that a disabling condition based on the value is satisfied. The disabling condition comprises a disabling threshold that equals the enabling condition comprising an enabling threshold with a threshold adjustment for hysteresis.

  • Patent number: 8065651
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide methods and apparatuses for implementing hierarchical design-for-test (DFT) logic on a circuit. The hierarchical DFT logic implements DFT circuitry that can be dedicated to a module, and which can configure DFT circuitry for multiple modules to share a sequential input signal and/or to share a sequential output signal. During operation, the DFT circuitry for a first module can propagate a bit sequence from the sequential input signal to the DFT circuitry of a second module, such that the bit sequence can include a set of control signal values for controlling the DFT circuitry, and can include compressed test vectors for testing the modules. Furthermore, the DFT circuitry for the second module can generate a sequential response signal, which combines the compressed response vectors from the second module and a sequential response signal from the DFT circuitry of the first module.

  • Publication number: 20110274082
Abstract: Techniques are provided to enable support of roaming wireless devices in a network such that the wireless devices can keep their Internet Protocol (IP) addresses as they roam across mobility sub-domains. Traffic for a wireless device that roams is tunneled back to the access switch that serves the IP subnet which includes an IP address for the wireless device. Traffic is tunneled back to that access switch for the wireless device when the wireless device roams to another access switch which does not serve the IP subnet for the wireless device in the same mobility sub-domain and when the wireless device roams to a different mobility sub-domain, in which case the traffic is tunneled between tunneling endpoints in the respective mobility sub-domains.

  • Publication number: 20110276459
Abstract: A computer implemented method and system for executing block trades for a security includes steps or devices for receiving a block trade request, at a computer system. The block request includes data representing a quantity of shares of the security to be traded over a period of time. The computer system divides the period of time into a plurality of time bins. A computer system, for the received block trade request, computes, for each time bin, a number of shares to be traded as a trading target based on at least historical trading volumes using predictive analysis. For a first time bin, a computer system generates executable trade orders for a number of shares to be traded that is substantially equal to the trading target for the first time bin. A computer system executes at least a portion of the executable trade orders in a trade forum within each time bin in the future.

  • Publication number: 20110275338
Abstract: A new pulse shape for CPM is introduced which is obtained by a linear combination of well-known RC and REC pulse shapes. The new pulse shape addresses the tradeoff between the width of the PSD main lobe and the rate of decay of the side lobe to improve the coded performance of multi-carrier systems affected by ACI. Also, a methodology is proposed to design and evaluate the performance of the new pulse shape for multi-carrier, coded systems based on the modulation constrained capacity. Furthermore, a binary convolutional code and the CPM modulator are concatenated using an S-random bit interleaver to lower the error floor. Finally, Laurent representation of the new pulse shape is suggested such that by retaining only the principal pulses at the receiver, complexity of the receiver can be reduced.

  • Publication number: 20110274035
Abstract: Techniques are provided for seamless integration of wired and wireless functionality packet forwarding in network. A plurality of access switches are provided in each of a plurality of mobility sub-domains that are part of a mobility domain of a network. Each access switch serves one or more Internet Protocol (IP) subnets, each comprising a plurality of IP addresses. An access switch obtains an IP address for a wireless device according to the one or more IP subnets that the access switch serves. The access switch sends an association advertisement message to indicate the IP address of the wireless device and to enable other access switches and routers to compute a path to the wireless device. When a wireless device obtains an IP address, it can keep the same IP address as it roams in the mobility domain.

  • Publication number: 20110274036
Abstract: Techniques are provided to support roaming of wireless devices in a network such that the wireless devices can keep their Internet Protocol (IP) addresses as they roam within and across mobility sub-domains. When a wireless device roams from one access switch to another access switch, a tunneling endpoint apparatus in the wireless device's home mobility sub-domain is configured to serve as the point of presence for the roamed wireless device. Traffic for the roamed wireless device is tunneled from the access switch where the wireless device has roamed (where it is currently attached) to the tunneling endpoint apparatus. When the wireless device roams across mobility sub-domains, then traffic is tunneled from the access switch where the wireless device is currently attached to the tunneling endpoint apparatus in that mobility sub-domain (called a “foreign” mobility sub-domain) to the tunneling endpoint apparatus in the wireless device's home mobility sub-domain.

  • Publication number: 20110274216
Abstract: A new coded continuous phase modulation (CPM) scheme is proposed to enhance physical layer performance of the current DVB-RCS standard for a satellite communication system. The proposed CPM scheme uses a phase pulse design and combination of modulation parameters to shape the power spectrum of CPM signal in order to improve resilience to adjacent channel interference (ACI). Additionally, it improves error rate performance at both high and low frame error rates using low complexity binary convolutional codes and S-random bit interleaving. Phase response using the proposed CPM scheme is a weighted average of the conventional rectangular and raised-cosine responses and provides optimum response to minimize frame error rate for a given data rate.
