  • Patent number: 6855293
Abstract: A fluid management apparatus includes a substrate having a first surface and a second surface opposite to the first surface. A plurality of fluid inlets, which are preferably media reservoirs, are formed in a first pattern in the first surface of the substrate. A plurality of fluid outlets, which are preferably nozzles, are arranged in a second pattern, which is different from the first pattern, in the second surface of the substrate. A plurality of fluid ducts formed in the substrate for connecting respective fluid inlets with respective fluid outlets are provided so that a format conversation from the fluid inlets to the fluid outlets is effected. The fluid outlets have opening cross-sections smaller than that of the fluid inlets. Furthermore, the fluid inlets may be arranged in the raster scheme of microtiter plates.

  • Publication number: 20040082076
Abstract: A device for applying a plurality of microdroplets onto a substrate comprises a dosing head substrate (10) having a plurality of nozzle openings (16) formed therein. For each nozzle opening (16), there is provided a media portion (18) to be filled with a liquid to be dosed. There is provided a deformable component (28) that is arranged adjacent the media portions (18). Finally, the device comprises an actuating means (34) for actuating the deformable component (30) such that the deformable component (30) deforms into the media portions (18) so as to simultaneously expel microdroplets from the plurality of nozzle openings (16).

  • Publication number: 20040074557
Abstract: A microdosage device comprises a media reservoir used for accommodating a liquid to be dosed, a nozzle connected via a connecting channel to the media reservoir and adapted to be filled via said connecting channel with the liquid to be dosed, and a drive unit for applying, when actuated, to a liquid contained in the media reservoir and in the nozzle a force of such a nature that a substantially identical pressure will be exerted on said liquid contained in the media reservoir and in the nozzle. Flow resistances of the connecting channel and of the nozzle are dimensioned such that, in response to an actuation of the drive unit, a volumetric flow in the connecting channel will be small in comparison with a volumetric flow in the nozzle, said volumetric flow in the nozzle causing an ejection of the liquid to be dosed from an ejection opening of the nozzle.

  • Publication number: 20020176072
Abstract: A device for controlling the quality of microdroplets deposited on a substrate comprises a light source for illuminating the substrate which has the microdroplets deposited thereon. An image generator is provided for receiving the light which has been produced by the light source, fallen through the substrate or reflected by the substrate, so as to generate an image. Furthermore, an identifier and an analyzer are provided for analyzing the generated image with respect to patterns created in said image as a result of a refractive effect produced by microdroplets deposited on the substrate.

  • Patent number: 6416294
Abstract: A volume sensor-free microdosing device comprises a pressure chamber which is at least partly delimited by a displacer, an actuating device for actuating the displacer, the volume of the pressure chamber being adapted to the changed by actuating the displacer, a media reservoir which is in fluid communication with the pressure chamber, an outlet opening which is in fluid communication with the pressure chamber, and a control mechanism.

  • Patent number: 6399395
Abstract: A device for applying microdroplets to a substrate includes a dosing head having a nozzle orifice and a liquid storage area in fluid communication with the orifice. A drive applies an acceleration to the dosing head. A quantity of liquid in the storage area cannot follow the acceleration due to its inertia. This inertia causes microdroplets to be driven out of the nozzle onto the substrate. In one embodiment, the dosing head includes a plurality of nozzle orifices each having an associated liquid storage area, so that a plurality of different analytes are deposited on the substrate.

  • Patent number: 6280148
Abstract: A microdosing device comprises a pressure chamber which is at least partly delimited by a displacer, an actuating device for actuating the displacer, the volume of the pressure chamber being adapted to be changed by actuating the displacer, a media reservoir which is in fluid comunication with the pressure chamber via a first fluid line, and an outlet opening which is in fluid communication with the pressure chamber via a second fluid line. The microdosing device additionally comprises a means for detecting the respective position of the displacer and a control means which is connected to the actuating device and to the means for detecting the position of the displacer, said control means controlling the actuating device on the basis of the detected position of the displacer or on the basis of displacer positions detected during at least one preceding dosing cycle so as to cause the discharge of a defined volume of fluid from the outlet opening.

  • Patent number: 6109889
Abstract: A fluid pump has a pump body and a displacer, the displacer and the pump body being implemented such that a pump chamber is defined therebetween, the pump chamber having an inlet opening and an outlet opening, neither the inlet opening nor the outlet opening being provided with a check valve. A drive means is provided which positions the displacer periodically at a first and at a second end position. The displacer closes the outlet opening when it occupies its first end position and leaves the outlet opening free when it occupies its second end position and leaves the inlet opening free at both end positions thereof.

  • Patent number: 6000676
Abstract: A microvalve for controlling a fluid flow comprises a valve body provided with a valve opening having a sealing edge, and a valve plate provided with fluid openings. The valve plate is adapted to be moved perpendicularly to the valve body in such a way that, at a first position, said valve plate closes the valve opening, whereas, at a second position, it is perpendicularly spaced from said valve opening in such a way that a flow cross-section defined by said valve opening and said valve plate is decisively determined by the distance between the sealing edge and the valve plate. The contour of the sealing edge of the valve opening is chosen such that the length of the sealing edge exceeds the length of a sealing edge of a square valve opening which is equal in area.

  • Patent number: 5529465
Abstract: An electrostatically driven diaphragm micropump comprises a first pump body s a counterelectrode and a second pump body having a diaphragm region. The two pump bodies establish a hollow space bordering on the diaphragm region and are electrically insulated from each other. The hollow space is filled with a medium different from the fluid to be pumped. The pump bodies may consist of a semiconductor material of different types of charge. The medium in the hollow space preferably has a high dielectric constant.
