  • Publication number: 20040173734
Abstract: A position sensor for determining the angular position of a steering wheel. The shaft of the steering wheel is connected to a code disk and turn ring of the sensor so that when steering wheel is rotated, the coded disk and turn ring are also rotated. The code disk is a flat circular disk having a series of cut-outs or bits around its perimeter. A light emitting diode shines a light through the cut-outs and is read by a photo detector which determines the angular position of the code disk. The turn ring is fitted on the outside of the code disk and rotates in a hypocycloidic circle so that for every full revolution of the code disk, the turn ring rotates through a smaller angle. The turn ring is placed over a series of Hall sensors to determine the number of revolutions of the code disk.

  • Publication number: 20040173173
Abstract: The present invention provides an improvement over conventional engine control systems for variable valve control devices for the valvetrain in that it provides a substantially closed-circuit hydrostatic fluid control system and accompanying method to improve response time of the variable valve control device and reduce energy consumption by an engine oil pump. The hydrostatic fluid control system preferably comprises a bi-directional fluid-pumping device that is fluidly connected to a variable valve control device. • Publication number: 20040173019
Abstract: The flow of a fluid at low flow rates is measured in a flow sensing assembly and controlled without introducing measuring devices into the fluid flow path. The flow sensing assembly is enclosed in a housing to lessen ambient and fluid temperature change effects on the measurements obtained. As the fluid is flowing through tubing in the flow sensing assembly, the tubing is heated to impart heat to the fluid. Heat sensors are attached at spaced positions from each other along the tubing in the direction of fluid flow to sense temperatures. The amount of heat applied to the tubing is controlled to maintain an established temperature differential between the heat sensors. The amount of heat applied is measured to provide an accurate and proportional indication of the fluid flow rate.

  • Publication number: 20040174461
Abstract: A method for obtaining line synchronization information items from a video signal is proposed. The inventive method is based on convolving the relevant part of an analogue video line signal with a pattern function. The result of the convolution operation is further processed to determine the time instants of the occurrence of the horizontal sync signals. The time instants are subsequently filtered to generate horizontal pulses. A video line memory allows to utilize subsequent horizontal sync signals for calculating the horizontal sync pulse of a current video line. The invention also relates to an apparatus for carrying out the method.

  • Patent number: 6788421
Abstract: Topographic measurement of eye structures based on short coherence interferometry is the subject of the invention. The problem occurring in this connection is that longitudinal and transverse eye movements during signal registration lead to errors in the measured structure. The influences of longitudinal eye movements are compensated in that the reference beam, independent from the measurement beam, is directed to the corneal vertex and is reflected at the latter. The influences of longitudinal eye movements are minimized in that the transverse position of the eye is monitored by means of a direction-dependent registration of the light reflected at the corneal vertex by means of a diode array or a four-quadrant diode and transverse misalignment is detected and compensated.
