  • Patent number: 8656758
Abstract: Approaches for a testing apparatus for evaluating a cover of a hard-disk drive. The testing apparatus may detect whether the cover has a defect that prevents the cover from being sufficiently airtight. The testing apparatus includes a base structure that comprises a concave recess shaped to receive the cover to be tested. When the cover is disposed within the concave recess, the cover forms a first chamber in the concave recess between the cover and the base structure. The testing apparatus also includes a removable lid. When the removable lid covers the concave recess with the cover disposed therein, the removable lid forms a second chamber in the concave recess between the cover, the base structure, and the removable lid. The testing apparatus also includes a means for introducing helium gas to one of the chambers and a means for detecting how much helium gas leaks from that chamber.

  • Patent number: 8274756
Abstract: Approaches for implementing a conductive gasket comprising carbon nanotubes for deployment within a sensitive environment, such as an environment containing equipment whose operation may be affected by airborne particles or electromagnetic energy. For example, a hard-disk drive (HDD) comprises an enclosure that is formed by coupling a first component, such as a cover, to a second component, such as a base, using one or more gaskets. The one or more gaskets may be constructed using a material that includes carbon nanotubes. The composition of the material used to construct the gaskets may be selected to achieve a desired electromagnetic conductivity for the gaskets. In this way, the gaskets of the enclosure of the HDD do not render the enclosure vulnerable to external electromagnetic energy and are constructed in a manner that does not introduce any harmful airborne contaminants within the protective enclosure of the HDD.

  • Patent number: 8096254
Abstract: In one preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a system for launching and recovering one or more unmanned, underwater vehicles. The system includes a surface vessel having a generally low waterline for transporting, launching and recovering the unmanned vehicles. The system provides the ability to transport, launch and recover unmanned vehicles from either the port or starboard sides of the surface vessel, utilizing an A-frame hoist assembly which can be moved laterally in a controlled manner between the port and starboard sides of the surface vessel for lifting the unmanned vehicles, and which can be pivoted in a controlled manner to provide the launch and recovery operations.

  • Publication number: 20100083324
Abstract: Synchronized video playback among multiple users across a network provides a fully social experience where people in different locations may be enabled to watch the same video in a “virtual living room.” The users may be represented graphically, as avatars, in front of the video, and may be enabled to use animations, text chat, and voice chat to interact with each other. Thus, a group of people may be enabled to share the experience of watching a video together as if they were in the same room, without being physically present together.

  • Publication number: 20090139218
Abstract: An exhaust system to remove exhaust from an engine of a vehicle may include a first exhaust member to conduct the exhaust from the engine of the vehicle to the atmosphere and a source of pressurized fluid which may be air or gas to conduct the pressurized fluid to the first exhaust member to cool the exhaust from the engine of the vehicle. The source of pressurized fluid may be a blower, and the source of pressurized fluids may be a air dam. The blower may be connected to a battery of the vehicle, and the blower may include a sensor to determine if a predetermined speed has been reached to allow ram air input or to warn of back pressure, high temperature or current flow. The sensor may inactivate the blower when the predetermined speed has been reached. The source of pressurized fluid may be compressed air, and the source of the pressurized fluid may be refrigerated air.

  • Patent number: 7363484
Abstract: A machine-readable identification register is provided on each cell of a cellular computer system. The identification register is read during system startup to identify a processor type, which may include an instruction set architecture (ISA), associated with the cell. The processor type information is used to ensure that a compatible boot image is provided to processors of the cell. In another embodiment, the system management subsystem has a version selection flag. When the version selection flag is in a first state, the compatible boot image provided to processors of the cell is a current boot image; with the selection flag in a second state the compatible boot image provided to processors of the cell is an older edition of the boot image.
