  • Publication number: 20050034825
Abstract: Provided is a process for bleaching pulp with ozone. The process involves preparing a slurry of cellulosic pulp having a consistency in fibers of from 1-5 weight %. Such a low consistency slurry is then mixed with ozone under high shear conditions. The ozone is then maintained in contact with the cellulosic fibers to effect bleaching of the fibers. The present process offers the advantages of bleaching using a low consistency slurry, with the added advantages of employing ozone.

  • Patent number: 6564341
Abstract: A method, system and apparatus enables carrier-grade network fault monitoring in an unreliable network transport environment. An element manager of the system is adapted for formulating and sending notifications through the unreliable network transport environment, each notification having an unique transmitted notification serial number (TxNSN). A network manager is operatively connected for bi-directional communication with the element manager. The network manager includes a detection mechanism responsive to notifications received from the element manager to detect a missing notification on the basis of the respective TxNSNs of received notifications; and a polling mechanism responsive to detection of a missing notification to send a polling request to the element manager for transmission of a response containing data related to the missing notification. The advantage is simple, easily managed, carrier-grade network fault monitoring without overloading the unreliable network transport environment.

  • Patent number: 5217539
Abstract: Zinc diffusion procedures applicable for large scale manufacture of GaAs and GaSb cells used in tandem solar cells having a high energy conversion efficiency. The zinc doping and carrier concentration are restricted to be less than about 10.sup.19 /cm.sup.3 to obtain good light generated carrier collection and hence good short circuit currents. The amount of zinc that is available for diffusion during a drive-in heating step is restricted. Confinement of zinc and arsenic vapors during the heating step may be effected by use of a proximity source wafer or by an encapsulant layer. The zinc diffusion of GaSb is obtained by a homogeneous light diffusion that is followed by a patterned heavy diffusion to give low ohmic contact with the grid lines. Texture etching of the GaSb solar cell is also compatible with this diffusion process.

  • Patent number: 5138624
Abstract: The invention relates to the design of multiwavelength LED devices having multiple-lobe optical spectrums and laser diode devices with multiple designated wavelengths wherein the devices are formed by stacking various active layers of selected semiconductor materials whereby each layer is assigned to be active at a different wavelength. The independent layers are active at different wavelengths based on both their material composition and Quantum Well geometry. Independent control of current to each layer is allowed which in effect controls the spectral intensity distribution and the spectral widths. The step of allowing independent control of the current is achieved by considering the probabilities of carrier capturing, recombining carriers at various active layers and minimizing the current through all the barriers and cladding layers and optimizing the current through each active layer by controlling the individual thicknesses.

  • Patent number: 4687570
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for converting solid carbonaceous material, such as coal, to liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons utilizing methane, generally at a residence time of about 20-120 minutes at a temperature of 250.degree.-750.degree. C., preferably 350.degree.-450.degree. C., pressurized up to 6000 psi, and preferably in the 1000-2500 psi range, preferably directly utilizing methane 50-100% by volume in a mix of methane and hydrogen. A hydrogen donor solvent or liquid vehicle such as tetralin, tetrahydroquinoline, piperidine, and pyrolidine may be used in a slurry mix where the solvent feed is 0-100% by weight of the coal or carbonaceous feed. Carbonaceous feed material can either be natural, such as coal, wood, oil shale, petroleum, tar sands, etc., or man-made residual oils, tars, and heavy hydrocarbon residues from other processing systems.
