A colour converting layer is provided in the container volume, the colour converting Got layer configured to absorb pump light and emit converted light of a converted light wavelength longer than the pump light wavelength. A lens is provided on the container surface over the opening, the lens having a convex surface on an opposite side of the lens to the colour converting layer. A pump light reflector laminate provided over the convex surface of the lens the pump light reflector laminate having a stop-band configured to reflect the pump light centred on a first wavelength.

A lighting source includes a first semiconductor die and a second semiconductor die. The first semiconductor die includes an LED. The second semiconductor die is bonded to the first semiconductor device and includes a crystalline waveguide having a first waveguide surface, a second waveguide surface, and a waveguide body. The first waveguide surface receives light from the LED. The waveguide body is comprised of a crystalline material that transmits the received light from the first waveguide surface to the second waveguide surface. The second waveguide surface emits the received portion of the light with a second beam divergence that is significantly less than the first beam divergence.

A first surface portion having a first series of notches spaced along the length of the first surface portion defines first regions of smooth surface between the notches. A second series of notches spaced along the length of the second surface portion defines second regions of smooth surface between the notches. The first and second series of notches are offset such that a notch in the first series lies diametrically opposite to a second region of smooth surface, so that light conveyed by the light pipe is deflected by each notch through said smooth surfaces and out of the light pipe.

The light diffuser is spaced apart from the display medium and is in an intermediate orientation with respect to the light diffuser and the display medium. The carrier has opposite first and second surfaces, the first surface being oriented generally towards the display medium and the second surface being oriented generally towards the light diffuser. The surfaces are bounded by one or more edges. The arrangement is such that illumination from the light source is directed away from the display medium to be incident upon the light diffuser.
