    Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed for measuring the quantity of residual toner contained in a toner cartridge, and an image forming apparatus having such a device. The inventive device for measuring the quantity of residual toner comprises a controller and a residual toner data memory. The controller selects one of a plurality of preset values for one or more correction coefficients weighted depending on the length of time the toner cartridge has been in printing service, and calculates the quantity of residual toner using the selected value for each correction coefficient and the number of counted dots of a print data. The residual toner memory stores the quantity of residual toner calculated and updated by the controller. According to one exemplary embodiment, the quantity of residual toner can be calculated close to actual value by applying appropriately weighted coefficients.

The method includes forming an electrostatic latent image by operating a photoconductor and an exposure unit, developing the electrostatic latent image by operating a developing unit, and transferring the developed image to a paper, wherein the operation of the developing unit is stopped after a tail end of the electrostatic latent image passes through the developing nip. In addition, the operation of the developing unit is started at a predetermined time between the time when the paper begins to be transmitted and the time when a leading end of the electrostatic latent image reaches the developing nip.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for efficiently scanning a duplex document in which a scan unit sequentially scans both sides of a sheet of a duplex document by moving the sheet across a reader, and a reverse output unit to output the sheet after turning over the sheet. Therefore, since the sheet of a document can be fed and scanned while the second side of the previous sheet of the document is scanned, scanning time can be reduced. Particularly, the reduction in scanning time is very useful when multiple sheets of a duplex document need to be scanned.
