  • Patent number: 9271330
Abstract: In a communication system, a session control server receives a session request for User Equipment (UE) over a first network and exchanges signaling with the UE and a transfer control server to establish a media session. The transfer control server sends an association of the UE and the transfer control server to a translation server. The translation server associates the UE with the transfer control server. The translation server receives a transfer request for the UE from a second network and identifies the transfer control server associated with the UE. The translation server transfers the transfer request for delivery to the transfer control server. The transfer control server exchanges signaling with the second network responsive to the transfer request to transfer the media session for the UE from the first network to the second network.

  • Patent number: 9258755
Abstract: As a communication device receives packet data via a first access network, the communication detects that packet data arriving via a second access network is duplicative of the packet data that the communication device is receiving via the first access network. In response to detecting such duplication, the communication device discontinues being served by the first access network and continues with communication via the second access network.

  • Patent number: 9237549
Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing page-response intervals. When a network entity receives a paging trigger signal, the entity determines a page-response interval to use for paging the mobile station, based on one or more factors such as (i) whether the communication is to be provided to the mobile station over the same air interface and/or same air interface protocol that will carry the paging to the mobile station and/or (ii) what network, interface, or other entity the trigger signal comes from and/or what network communication module receives the trigger signal. The network entity then uses the determined page-response interval when paging the mobile station, waiting that determined period of time after each page attempt before attempting to page again or before concluding that the paging effort failed.

  • Patent number: 9220118
Abstract: A mobility management entity (MME) may receive a request that identifies an access point name (APN) for a packet data connection for a wireless communication device (WCD). The APN may be authorized by the WCD according to a service profile in a home subscriber server (HSS), and the APN may be associated with a subscribed packet data policy. However, if the MME determines that it cannot validate the request (e.g., because the HSS is unreachable or non-responsive), the MME may send to a packet gateway a session request that identifies the WCD and includes a dummy APN. The dummy APN is associated with a substitute packet data policy that differs from the subscribed packet data policy. Based on the session request including the dummy APN, the packet gateway may establish a packet data session for the WCD in accordance with the substitute packet data policy.

  • Patent number: 9210533
Abstract: A wireless base station schedules allocated resource blocks from an OFDM resource block structure to a UEs and holds unallocated resource blocks from the OFDM resource block structure for machines. The base station decodes wireless OFDM signals based on the OFDM resource block structure to obtain user data from the UEs using the allocated resource blocks and to obtain machine data from the machine devices using the unallocated resource blocks. The base station processes the machine data from the unallocated resource blocks to validate authorization marks in individual resource blocks. The base station transfers portions of the machine data having the valid authorization marks for delivery. The base station inhibits the transfer of machine data not having the valid authorization marks.

  • Patent number: 9198083
Abstract: Illustrative methods and systems may help to more efficiently use network resources in fall back scenarios. An illustrative method involves a network component: (a) receiving a first paging request directed to a target user-entity (UE) for a first communication of a first communication type, (b) initiating a first paging process to page the target UE for the first communication, (c) before the first paging process is complete, receiving a second paging request directed to the target UE, wherein the second paging request for a second communication of a second communication type, wherein the second communication type that has a higher priority than the first communication type, and (d) in response: (i) refraining from assigning network resources for the first communication, and (ii) using a result of the first paging process to determine whether or not to assign network resources for the second communication.

  • Patent number: 9185584
Abstract: In normal operation, a primary signaling controller in a first RAN manages bearer connectivity and tracking area updates for a UE and further interfaces with a second RAN over a primary signaling interface to facilitate inter-RAN signaling related to transition of the UE from being served by the first RAN to being served by the second RAN, such as circuit-switched fallback signaling. Upon detecting failure of the primary signaling interface, the first RAN is dynamically reconfigured to have such inter-RAN signaling for the UE pass over a secondary signaling interface between the second RAN and a secondary signaling controller of the first RAN, while the primary signaling controller continues to manage bearer connectivity and tracking area updates for the UE.

  • Patent number: 9179433
Abstract: A method and apparatus in which (i) a user equipment device registers with a first radio access network (RAN) that provides connectivity with a transport network, (ii) once registered with the first RAN, the device then registers via the first RAN and transport network with a call server, and (iii) in response to the device registering with the call server, but before the device then engages in a call served by the call server, the device registers via the first RAN with a second RAN. The method may thereby help to expedite later handover of a call served by the call server from being via the first RAN to being via the second RAN. Further, by the second RAN registration being conducted in response to registration of the device with the call server, the method may help to ensure usefulness of the registration of the device with the second RAN.

  • Patent number: 9125106
Abstract: A gateway may establish connectivity between a user equipment device (UE) and a network at a Quality of Service (QOS) indicated in a policy profile of the UE. Thereafter, the gateway may receive information indicating a change to the QOS and may transmit the information for receipt by the UE. If the gateway fails to receive an acceptance response from the UE, the gateway may then determine whether to update the QOS in the policy profile of the UE. On one hand, the gateway may update the QOS in the policy profile if the change to the QOS is a downgrade. On the other hand, the gateway may keep the QOS in the policy profile unchanged if the change to the QOS is an upgrade. The gateway may then enforce the QOS of the connectivity based on the policy profile of the UE.

  • Patent number: 8989124
Abstract: Management of bearers in a communication system. A network may establish for a user equipment device (UE) a first bearer of a first type. Thereafter, upon establishment of a bearer of a second type for the UE, the network may automatically release the first bearer of the first type. In turn, when the UE finishes communication on the bearer of the second type, the network may not only release that bearer of the second type but may automatically establish for the UE a second bearer of the first type.

  • Patent number: 8818387
Abstract: Disclosed are a method, apparatus, and system for managing connections in a wireless communication network. When a user equipment device (UE) transitions between an idle state and an active state, a radio link is established between a base station and the UE and a core network link is established between the base station and a core network entity. In response to detecting that no data packets are exchanged between the UE and the base station, a timer is initiated. Further, in response to detecting that data packets are being exchanged between the UE and the base station, the timer is reset. The radio link is released in response to the timer reaching a first predetermined value associated with a first inactivity period and the core network link is released in response to the timer reaching a second predetermined value associated with a second inactivity period.
