Patent number: 7071674Abstract: A voltmeter for measuring atmospheric or other voltages eliminates the dead band without application of high voltages or radioactive isotopes to increase conductivity in the region of the probe. A vacuum tube is operated at substantially reduced conduction in order to achieve high sensitivity and eliminate passive components in the input circuit. A voltage is developed to produce meter indication or control charging or charge-neutralizing circuits. In the preferred embodiment, a meter scale is calibrated to indicate the presence of atmospheric charges of particular interest to anglers. Naturally occurring electrical currents are known to stimulate the feeding of fish.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 2005Date of Patent: July 4, 2006Inventors: Thomas Jay Wells, Robert Scott Elliott

Patent number: 7039949Abstract: A method and system for authorizing communications sent from a sender to a recipient. The authorization system receives a communication sent from a sender to a recipient. The authorization system determines whether that sender is authorized to send communications to that recipient. If the authorization system determines that the sender is not authorized, then the authorization system sends an authorization communication to the sender. The authorization communication requests authorization information from the sender. When the authorization system receives the authorization information, it determines whether the information is correct. If correct, then the authorization system indicates that the sender is authorized and forwards the communication to the recipient. When a subsequent communication sent from the sender to the recipient is received, the authorization system may automatically determine that the sender is authorized and forward the communication to the recipient without re-contacting the sender.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 2001Date of Patent: May 2, 2006Inventors: Brian Ross Cartmell, Cameron Scott Elliott

Publication number: 20060009289Abstract: A car area network is disposed in a car to enable communications between various devices in the car. An existing consumer electronics device (CED) coupled to the car area network (CAN) performs an existing consumer electronics device function. That existing (CED) is adapted to control various devices coupled to the CAN including video gaming devices. In one example, the adapted CED cooperates with a game server to effect game play. In another example, the adapted CED functions as a virtual video game platform to support play of video games. A multifunction controller transmits control information to the adapted CED via the car area network to permit a car occupant to control the adapted CED to permit the occupant to play a video game using the video game display. One or more audio and/or visual devices coupled to the CAN may also be controlled by commands transmitted from the adapted CED or from the multimedia controller over the CAN.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 6, 2005Publication date: January 12, 2006Applicants: Nintendo Co. Ltd., Nintendo of America, Inc.Inventors: David McCarten, Peter Eck, Scott Elliott, Hiroshi Kamada

Publication number: 20060003306Abstract: A hardware and software implemented, standardize testing, scoring and reporting system has a network interface, being either LAN or the Internet. A test is selected from a library, assigned to a group of examinees, and a record is made of the assignment. The test is available on-line, or downloaded, or both. Downloaded tests are saved as PDF files and printed into booklets. Examinees record answers on bubble sheets, which are scanned at the customer site or shipped to a processing plant. Individual scanned answer sheets provided data for individual scanned records. Scanning software performs an initial auto-correct and then performs an initial check for errors in scanned records. Tests are batched for later inspection. Scanned records with errors are classified as invalid and the test papers are separated. Prompts are generated for a human test paper inspection and scanned record editing.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 2, 2004Publication date: January 5, 2006Inventors: Michael McGinley, Brian Maguire, Scott Elliott, Robert Patrylak, George Allen

Patent number: 6942573Abstract: An existing video game system is modified to include additional communication and storage capability via a modem and hard disk drive. In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, the primary system security features are incorporated into a video game system expansion device having a hard disk drive. The security system does not rely on the relatively insecure video game system. The present exemplary embodiment focuses security control in a disk drive/mass media controlling engine which is physically disposed within the expansion device housing as close as possible to the hard disk drive and the downloaded video games and other data it is designed to protect. Security features are incorporated into, for example, a disk drive controlling processing engine to provide security features which extend far beyond simplistic password systems which have heretofore been utilized in conjunction with disk drive controllers.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 2004Date of Patent: September 13, 2005Assignee: Nintendo Co., Ltd.Inventor: Scott Elliott

Publication number: 20050130744Abstract: A video game distribution network for use in airlines, trains, hotels, cruise ships, set top boxes, cable television systems, satellite and other wireless systems or other communications systems, distributes special purpose game binary image files to general purpose computing/display devices. Software emulators running on the general purpose computing/display devices model the game source platform and interpret and/or compile the game files to provide interactive video game play. Software emulators for emulating a handheld video game platform such as GAME BOY®, GAME BOY COLOR® and/or GAME BOY ADVANCE® on a low-capability target platform (e.g., a seat-back display for airline or train use, a personal digital assistant, a cell phone) may provide any number of features and optimizations to provide high quality graphics and sound that nearly duplicates the game playing experience on the native platform.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 17, 2004Publication date: June 16, 2005Applicant: NINTENDO Co., LtdInventors: Charles Eck, Scott Elliott, Hiroshi Kamada, Patrick Link, David McCarten

Patent number: 6769989Abstract: An existing video game system is modified to include additional communication and storage capability via a modem and hard disk drive. The modification may involve the use of an expansion device coupled to a video game system port. A cable TV tuner is also included in the expansion device to assist in providing a unique picture-in-picture video capability. TV signals are coupled to the expansion device via the RF input from either cable TV or off-air signals. These RF signals are blended with the output signals from the video game system. A user may, for example, watch TV while viewing overlay information from the video game console. A user may receive a TV channel guide downloaded via the Internet, spot a program which the user desires to view and immediately access, via an IR input, the desired channel through the expansion device TV tuner. A user may also watch TV while simultaneously logging onto the Internet. A hard drive permits downloading from the Internet of entire games.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2003Date of Patent: August 3, 2004Assignee: Nintendo of America Inc.Inventors: Darren Smith, Scott Elliott, David J. Publication number: 20040097288Abstract: Multiple video game players access an encrypted video game library stored on a shared mass storage device. A multiplexer multiplexes data read from the mass storage device to provide output streams to multiple video game playing units consuming video game instructions. A secure bus communicates video game instructions from the shared mass storage device to each of the video game playing units. Video game software or other entertainment content is distributed to the shared mass storage device via electronic download in multi-level encrypted form. Before being transported, the content is encrypted and then further encrypted.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 14, 2002Publication date: May 20, 2004Inventors: Jim A. Patent number: 6631480Abstract: The present invention is directed toward creating backup copies of previously saved data before it is modified by a crashed computer program executing in a preemptive multitasking operating system environment. The invention is advantageous in that it protects against data loss and corruption caused by operating system calls issued by malfunctioning, crashed computer programs. A method in accordance with the invention comprises the steps of: (a) monitoring operating system calls made by a crashed program; (b) intercepting a selected group of operating system calls made by a crashed program before they are executed by an operating system; (c) logging a subset of the selected group of intercepted operating system calls in a memory; (d) creating backup copies of data potentially modified by a further subset of the selected group of intercepted operating system calls; and (e) passing intercepted operating system calls to an operating system.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1999Date of Patent: October 7, 2003Assignee: Symantec CorporationInventors: Art Zeigler, Scott Elliott
