Patent number: 9068415Abstract: A disconnector drill string has an uphole section and a downhole section coupled together by a disconnection sub, an operative length and an internal fluid conduit that extends along its operative length. The disconnection sub is operable to receive wirelessly a pre-designated command signal, to selectively couple the uphole section and the downhole section together, and to selectively uncouple the uphole section and the downhole section from one another. A method for using the disconnector drill string in a well bore includes the steps of introducing the disconnector drill string into the well bore, transmitting wirelessly the pre-designated command signal to the disconnection sub such that the disconnection sub selectively operates to uncouple the uphole section of the disconnector drill string from the downhole section of the disconnector drill string, and removing the uphole section of the disconnector drill string from the well bore.Type: GrantFiled: January 4, 2013Date of Patent: June 30, 2015Assignee: Saudi Arabian Oil CompanyInventor: David Scott Fraser

Patent number: 8298521Abstract: The present invention relates to altering the physical and/or chemical properties of at least part of at least one tissue in the eye. In a specific embodiment, it relates to the treatment of any eye disorder, although in particular embodiments the individual has a thickened Bruch's membrane. An activating energy source is utilized to effect a controlled diffusion enhancement and/or degradation of Bruch's membrane that enables improved diffusional transport between the choroid and retina. The individual is administered an inactivated diffusion-enhancing molecule that becomes associated with the membrane, which is then precisely exposed to an activating energy source, such as light or ultrasound.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 2008Date of Patent: October 30, 2012Assignees: The Regents of the University of California, California Institute of TechnologyInventors: Daniel M. Publication number: 20120129244Abstract: Described herein are systems, methods and apparatuses, for dewatering, flocculating and harvesting microorganisms. In various implementations, at least one intracellular product from the microorganisms is recovered and processed according to methods disclosed herein. In some implementations, an electromagnetic field is applied to an aqueous suspension of microorganisms thereby causing flocculation of the microorganisms. In various implementations, the microorganisms are harvested, such as by causing the microorganisms to flocculate and sink to the bottom of a container. Alternatively, the microorganisms are caused to flocculate and float to the surface of the aqueous medium where they can be recovered by skimming. In other implementations, the microorganisms are lysed as they are passed through a second electromagnetic field to release intracellular products, among other desired components of the microorganisms.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 14, 2011Publication date: May 24, 2012Inventors: Michael Phillip Green, Nicholas Eckelberry, Scott Fraser, Brian Goodall

Publication number: 20090228339Abstract: A method and system for a reverse online auction process include a dynamic rules-based configuration step. Question-and-answer sets having branches to other questions based on configured rules are generated. Vendor registrations are received from vendors, including vendor product and service information, vendor contact information, and vendor content. A vendor profile is created and stored for each vendor based the product and service information and on answers provided by the vendor to the question and answer sets. Client request leads received from clients are automatically matched to the vendor profile information to determine one or more selected vendors who receive the lead information. However, the received lead information excludes client contact information. Vendors may accept an opportunity to bid for the lead and thereby become candidate vendors. Candidate vendors may submit a bid for the lead, and at least one winning bidder is determined from the candidate vendors.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 5, 2009Publication date: September 10, 2009Inventors: David Wolf, Scott Fraser

Publication number: 20080025570Abstract: The methods described herein are methods to ascertain motion contrast within optical coherence tomography data based upon phase variance. The phase variance contrast observes the nanometer scale motion of scatterers associated with Brownian motion and other non-flow motion. The inventive method of calculating motion contrast from the phase variance can differentiate regions of different mobility based on the motion contrast differences, and can use the phase information to characterize mobility properties of the scatterers. In flow regions, the inventive method for acquiring and analyzing motion contrast can identify the regions as well as characterize the motion. Furthermore, the inventive method can determine quantitative flow estimation, the index of refraction variations, and absorption variations within flow regions.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 22, 2007Publication date: January 31, 2008Applicants: CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIAInventors: Jeffrey FINGLER, Scott FRASER, Daniel SCHWARTZ

Patent number: 7315678Abstract: The present invention relates to the field of radio-frequency (RF) waveguides. More specifically, the present invention pertains to a method and apparatus that provides ultra-low-loss RF waveguide structures targeted between approximately 300 GHz and approximately 30 THz. The RF waveguide includes a hollow core and a flexible honeycomb, periodic-bandgap structure surrounding the hollow core. The flexible honeycomb, periodic-bandgap structure is formed of a plurality of tubes formed of a dielectric material such as of low-loss quartz, polyethylene, or high-resistivity silicon. Using the RF waveguide, a user may attach a terahertz signal source to the waveguide and pass signals through the waveguide, while a terahertz signal receiver receives the signals.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 2005Date of Patent: January 1, 2008Assignee: California Institute Of TechnologyInventors: Peter Siegel, Cavour Yeh, Fred Shimabukuro, Scott Fraser

Publication number: 20070269901Abstract: Resonant sensors and methods of detecting specific molecules with enhanced sensitivity. Optical energy is introduced into a microcavity, such as a silica toroid-shaped microcavity. The microcavity sensor has a functionalized outer surface and a sufficiently high Q value to generate an evanescent optical field with increased intensity. A molecule bound to the functionalized outer surface interacts with the external optical field, thereby heating the microcavity and generating a detectable resonant wavelength shift, which indicates a small number of molecules, even a single molecule, without the use of fluorescent or metal labels. Resonant sensors and methods can also be used to detect specific molecules, even a single molecule, within an environment. One application is detecting very small quantities or a single molecule of heavy water in ordinary water.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 10, 2007Publication date: November 22, 2007Inventors: Andrea Armani, Rajan Kulkarni, Scott Fraser, Kerry Vahala
