  • Publication number: 20090145609
Abstract: A valve for downhole use has the ability to throttle between fully open and closed and is fully variable in positions in between. The valve is preferably responsive to flowing fluid viscosity and uses a three dimensional flow through restrictor in combination with a relatively movable cover. At a given flow, a higher viscosity fluid will create a greater relative movement and make it possible for flowing fluid to bypass more of the flow through member. In a particular application involving production from a zone, an array of such valves can allow more production where the viscosity is higher and less production where the viscosity drops due to, for example, water production.

  • Publication number: 20090101342
Abstract: An in-flow control device controls fluid flow into a wellbore tubular using a permeable medium positioned in a flow space. The permeable medium induces a predetermined pressure differential in the flow space. The permeable medium may include separate elements having interstitial spaces and/or solid porous members. In arrangements, a filtration element may be positioned upstream of the flow space. In arrangements, the flow space may be formed in a plug member associated with the housing. In certain embodiments, a flow restriction element, such as a check valve, in the housing may provide parallel fluid communication with the bore of the wellbore tubular. Additionally, an occlusion body may be positioned in the flow space and configured to disintegrate upon exposure to a preset condition. The occlusion body temporarily seals the flow space so that a bore of the tubular may be pressurized.

  • Publication number: 20090095470
Abstract: A downhole abrading tool having a body with a first end for connection to a drill string, a cutting end, a drilling fluid passageway, a restrictor disposed within drilling fluid passageway, and an indicator chamber is disclosed. Upon exposure of the indicator chamber to a well environment due to excessive wear on the cutting end, the restrictor is actuated. Actuation of the restrictor restricts the flow of drilling fluid from the drilling fluid passageway into the well environment. The restriction of flow of drilling fluid from the drilling fluid passageway causes a pressure increase in the drilling fluid flowing through the well that can detected by an operator of the downhole abrading tool. The pressure increase provides an indication to the operator of excessive wear on the cutting end of the downhole abrading tool so that the downhole abrading tool can be removed from the well and replaced.

  • Publication number: 20090044944
Abstract: A completion tubular is placed in position adjacent the zone or zones to be fractured and produced. It features preferably sliding sleeve valves that can assume at least two configurations: wide open and open with a screen material juxtaposed in the flow passage. In a preferred embodiment the valve assembly has three positions, adding a fully closed position to the other two mentioned. After run in, the valves can be put in the wide open position in any order desired to fracture. After fracturing, the valves can be closed or selectively be put in filtration position for production from the fractured zones in any desired order. Various ways are described to actuate the valves. The tubular can have telescoping pistons through which the fracturing can take place if the application calls for a cemented tubular. Alternatively, the tubular can be in open hole and simply have openings for passage of fracture fluid and external isolators to allow fracturing in any desired order.

  • Patent number: 7448445
Abstract: A downhole well tool comprises a seal ring secured along the outer surface of the downhole tool. The downhole tool expands the seal ring radially outward into sealing engagement with an outer tubular member in the well. The seal ring has an annular reinforcing element having an outer wall surface, an inner wall surface, and at least one hole disposed between the outer wall surface and the inner wall surface. At least one sealing material, either preformed or molded in place with the reinforcing element, is disposed along the outer wall surface, through each of the holes, and along at least a portion of the inner wall surface.

  • Publication number: 20080236844
Abstract: A packer setting device provides a buffered setting mechanism as a substantially incompressible fluid is selectively flowed into a compressible fluid chamber to compress a compressible fluid. This fluid transfer causes movement of a setting sleeve so that an associated packer device is set within a wellbore.

  • Patent number: 6955357
Abstract: A variable bore ram packer including a ram body, a top seal and a packer member designed for use in a standard ram-type blowout preventer used in oil and gas drilling operations is disclosed. The packer member is molded of an elastomeric material having a central semi-elliptical opening with a plurality of packer inserts molded within the elastomeric material in a semi-circular pattern around the central semi-elliptical opening of the elastomeric material. The semi-circular pattern of the packer inserts and the semi-elliptical opening of the elastomeric material share a common axis. The packer member and the plurality of packer inserts are molded into a unitary structure allowing the plurality of packer inserts to move and seat against different diameter tubular members to prevent extrusion of the elastomeric material between the packer inserts and the tubular member.

  • Publication number: 20040021269
Abstract: A variable bore ram packer designed for use in a standard ram-type blowout preventer used in oil and gas drilling operations is disclosed. The variable bore ram packer is molded of an elastomeric material having a central semi-circular opening sized to fit closely about a tubular member. The packer member includes a plurality of pillar inserts molded within the elastomeric material around the central semi-circular opening. The packer member and the plurality of pillar inserts are molded into a unitary structure allowing the plurality of pillar inserts to move and seat against different diameter tubular members to prevent extrusion of the elastomeric material between the pillar inserts and the tubular member. The pillar inserts include a top plate, a bottom plate and a reduced cross section central column integrally formed therebetween. The reduced cross section central column allows a rubber with higher moduli to be used.
