  • Patent number: 8543153
Abstract: According to the proposed method, the frequency of power control commands transmitted on a power control channel is changed according to the traffic. When the traffic becomes slower in at least one direction due to a DTX state, a slower transfer rate, asymmetric data transfer or for any other reason, the frequency of power control commands is lowered. Both the base station and the personal station may lower the frequency of the commands which they send. An alternative to changing the frequency of power control commands is to change the energy of power control bits. The duration of power control bits must hereby be extended, if a standard bit error ration is desired. If the system is frequency-divided and/or time-divided and uses frequency control command of several bits, the length of the command word may be shortened in addition to or as an alternative to the change in frequency. The power control algorithm may be changed several times during a traffic connection.

  • Patent number: 8160630
Abstract: This invention relates to a method and arrangement for controlling transmission power in a mobile communications system, and to a network element. In the method according to the invention a certain target level is defined for a value representing the quality of a signal, which target level should be reached by the received signal. According to the invention this target level is advantageously limited so as to be smaller than or equal to a first predetermined limit value and/or greater than or equal to a second predetermined limit value. In accordance with the invention the quality of the signal may be measured e.g. by means of an SIR value. In the method according to the invention the quality of the received signal is checked and, based on the check, a first SIR target level is given to a comparing element (21). By means of the comparing element (21) it is ensured that the said first SIR target level falls within predetermined limits.

  • Patent number: 7437160
Abstract: A method and a mobile station for controlling interfrequency handovers of the mobile station is provided. The target value for a quality factor of the received downlink signal is used in determining a need for an interfrequency handover. The target value of the handover control method may be equal to the target value of the downlink outer loop power control, or target value of handover control may depend on the target value of the downlink outer loop power control. As the target value of the downlink outer loop power control is updated, the target value of the handover control is typically updated, too. The same target values, or values that depend on the downlink outer loop power control target values, for example, via a known function, are used in controlling interfrequency handovers. A method according to the preferred embodiments of the invention detects this situation and preparations for an interfrequency handover are typically initiated.

  • Patent number: 7206332
Abstract: A two-dimensional optimization between adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and multi-code transmission targets the best bit rate at which a highest useable modulation and coding scheme (MCS) achieves a maximum allowed number of channelization codes or less. The optimized MCS and number of channelization codes at a best bit rate is communicated from a transmitter to a receiver, possibly also with power information for instance using a transport format combination indicator (TFCI). A user equipment may play the role of carrying out the optimization and signaling the result to the Node B or may instead receive the result as carried out by the Node B or RNC in response to a radio link quality measurement sent from the UE to the Node B.

  • Publication number: 20060256732
Abstract: An apparatus and corresponding method for deciding whether to perform link adaptation for communication transmitted from a first communication device to a second communication device, where the second communication device examines a signal received from the first communication device and provides a first indication of the quality of the signal. The method includes the steps of: recording at least one first indication of the quality of the signal as received by the second communication device; providing a second indication of the quality of the signal based on the at least one first indication of the quality of the signal; and deciding to perform link adaptation based on the second indication of the quality of the signal. The first indication of the quality of the signal is for example a signal to interference ratio (SIR) estimate. Often, the second indication of the quality of the signal is a changed SIR target value.

  • Patent number: 7133434
Abstract: A diversity receiver in a radio apparatus has at least two reception branches and a RAKE receiver to combine signal received by the different reception branches as well as a measuring receiver to make frequency specific measurements. The radio apparatus includes a switch connected with at least one reception branch and has at least two states in the first of which the switch is arranged to direct a signal received by a reception branch to the RAKE receiver and in the second of which the switch is arranged to direct a signal received by a reception branch to the measuring receiver. The radio apparatus makes measurements at other than the operating frequency without the reception at the operating frequency being interrupted. In a communications system the measurements may be associated with a handover.

  • Publication number: 20050143012
Abstract: A radio and a transmit power control method in a radio system supporting a use of coding blocks in communication between a base station and user equipment is disclosed. The method comprises producing a measured SIR (signal-to-interference ratio) value and compares the measured SIR value with the target SIR value. Accordingly, the method also comprises determining the quality of the received coding blocks. The method also comprising storing samples of the differences between the measured SIR value and the target SIR value. The method also comprises adjusting the target SIR value based on the values of the samples of differences between the measured SIR value and the target SIR value and the quality of the received coding block. The method also comprises providing a transmit power control command based on the adjusted target SIR value to the user equipment.

  • Patent number: RE39381
Abstract: A connection establishment method for establishing a random access type connection using a random access channel, which is used in a radio system having several subscriber terminal equipments (37 to 38) and base stations (33 to 36) where one or more transceiver units (40 to 47) operate, and in which system connection establishment between one of the subscriber terminal equipments (37 to 38) and the base station (33 to 36) is possible when the one subscriber terminal equip nt (37 to 38) is situated in the coverage area of one or more transceiver units (40 to 47) of the base station, where the one subscriber terminal equipment (3 to 38) evaluates the quality of the connections to be established. Starting from a condition in which no connection is established with the one subscriber terminal equipment, the one subscriber terminal equipment (37 to 38) forms a random access type connection to more than one base station transceiver unit (40 to 47) included in one or more base stations (33 to 38).
