  • Publication number: 20050107108
Abstract: According to the proposed method, the frequency of power control commands transmitted on a power control channel is changed according to the traffic. When the traffic becomes slower in at least one direction due to a DTX state, a slower transfer rate, asymmetric data transfer or for any other reason, the frequency of power control commands is lowered. Both the base station and the personal station may lower the frequency of the commands which they send. An alternative to changing the frequency of power control commands is to change the energy of power control bits. The duration of power control bits must hereby be extended, if a standard bit error ration is desired. If the system is frequency-divided and/or time-divided and uses frequency control command of several bits, the length of the command word may be shortened in addition to or as an alternative to the change in frequency. The power control algorithm may be changed several times during a traffic connection.

  • Patent number: 6788943
Abstract: The base station of a cellular radio system is in radio communication with the mobile stations of the cellular radio system by using mutually essentially orthogonal channels. In order to control the use of the channels, said channels are divided into groups with different priorities, so that the base station uses primarily the channel group with the highest priority. Channels belonging to different priority groups are put to use in a selective manner as a response to the loading of the base station.

  • Patent number: 6701130
Abstract: A method and an arrangement are provided for performing a transition from a continuous communication mode (601, 701, 801) into a combined slotted communication mode and measurement mode (602, 802, 803) in a mobile station (402) of a cellular radio system. A set of criteria is provided that are to be observed during the continuous communication mode (601, 701, 801). It is observed, whether at least one of said criteria is fulfilled during the continuous communication mode (601, 701, 801). As a response to the fulfilment of at least one of said criteria during the continuous communication mode, the operation of the mobile station (402) is changed into the combined slotted communication mode and measurement mode (602, 802, 803).

  • Patent number: 6567393
Abstract: A CDMA system transmits from a base station to a plurality of mobile stations or from mobile station to base station on a shared frequency band, each mobile station's data being spread by a different spreading code chosen from a set of orthogonal codes. Each receiver in base station or mobile station correlates for its intended data by despreading the signal using its particular one of the orthogonal codes. Under certain transmission delays, the effects of orthogonality may diminish and another mobile station's signal may cross-correlate with a mobile station's signal. If not all of the orthogonal codes are in use, the present invention determines another selection of orthogonal codes that yields lower cross-correlation under current delay conditions.

  • Publication number: 20030081692
Abstract: A two-dimensional optimization between adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and multi-code transmission targets the best bit rate at which a highest useable modulation and coding scheme (MCS) achieves a maximum allowed number of channelization codes or less. The optimized MCS and number of channelization codes at a best bit rate is communicated from a transmitter to a receiver, possibly also with power information for instance using a transport format combination indicator (TFCI). A user equipment may play the role of carrying out the optimization and signaling the result to the Node B or may instead receive the result as carried out by the Node B or RNC in response to a radio link quality measurement sent from the UE to the Node B.

  • Publication number: 20030072279
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for implementing a compressed mode of operation in a mobile communication network in which data transmission and reception is ceased so a required measurement can be made, wherein the power level of data transmission is adjusted to a correct power level before a subsequent data transmission is sent. The compressed mode may be implemented using a single frame method, in which control channels and power control commands are sent in the last slots of a single frame. The compressed mode may also be implemented using a double frame method, in which control channels and power control commands are sent in the beginning slots of a second frame. The method is implemented during a hard handover procedure, such as an intersystem handover. The measurement includes an inter-frequency measurement.

  • Patent number: 6539236
Abstract: A connection establishment method for establishing a random access type connection using a random access channel, which is used in a radio system having several subscriber terminal equipments (37 to 38) and base stations (33 to 36) where one or more transceiver units (40 to 47) operate, and in which system connection establishment between one of the subscriber terminal equipments (37 to 38) and the base station (33 to 36) is possible when the one subscriber terminal equip nt (37 to 38) is situated in the coverage area of one or more transceiver units (40 to 47) of the base station, where the one subscriber terminal equipment (3 to 38) evaluates the quality of the connections to be established. Starting from a condition in which no connection is established with the one subscriber terminal equipment, the one subscriber terminal equipment (37 to 38) forms a random access type connection to more than one base station transceiver unit (40 to 47) included in one or more base stations (33 to 38).

  • Publication number: 20030021243
Abstract: An apparatus and corresponding method for deciding whether to perform link adaptation for communication transmitted from a first communication device to a second communication device, where the second communication device examines a signal received from the first communication device and provides a first indication of the quality of the signal. The method includes the steps of: recording at least one first indication of the quality of the signal as received by the second communication device; providing a second indication of the quality of the signal based on the at least one first indication of the quality of the signal; and deciding to perform link adaptation based on the second indication of the quality of the signal. The first indication of the quality of the signal is for example a signal to interference ratio (SIR) estimate. Often, the second indication of the quality of the signal is either a changed SIR target value.

  • Publication number: 20010023185
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for establishing a random access type connection and a subscriber terminal equipment (37 to 38) and a radio system operating in accordance with the method. The subscriber terminal equipment (37 to 38) establishes a connection to several base stations (33 to 36) with the method of the invention. The base stations (33 to 36) are selected before establishing the connection by deducing the quality of the connection by means of pilot signals and both uplink and downlink interferences. The subscriber terminal equipment (37 to 38) has a connection to several base stations (33 to 36) already at the initial stage of the connection.

  • Patent number: 6289217
Abstract: A radio connection is adapted to an environment changing over the connection in a cellular radio system where the radio traffic between the base station and the mobile stations is arranged on a multiple access principle, according to a given frame structure (402). For a given radio connection between the transmitting device and the receiving device, there is reserved a given data transmission capacity in said frame structure. The receiving device measures the connection quality (103) during the connection, and on the bases of the measured connection quality, the size of the data transmission capacity (104, 110) reserved for said connection in said frame structure is changed.

  • Patent number: 6198928
Abstract: A cellular radio system and a handover method in a cellular radio system is provided. The cellular radio system includes a subscriber terminal and a base station. In the system, the subscriber terminal maintains and continuously updates an active set of base stations. One or several base stations belonging to the active set has a connection or connection set-up facilities to the subscriber terminal. The subscriber terminal controls the downlink transmission of one or several base stations of the active set by switching the transmission of the base station on or off. This method provides a fast soft handover similar to a hard handover.
