  • Publication number: 20170005734
Abstract: A method of data symbol recovery in a coherent receiver of an optical communications system includes processing data symbol estimates detected from a received optical signal, and determining recovered symbol values from the processed data symbol estimates. The recovered symbol values belong to a symbol constellation having a predetermined asymmetry. Processing the data symbol estimates compensates phase noise that is greater than one decision region of the symbol constellation. A coherent receiver of an optical communications system includes a module configured to process data symbol estimates detected from a received optical signal and a decision circuit configured to determine recovered symbol values from the processed data symbol estimates. The recovered symbol values belong to a symbol constellation having a predetermined asymmetry. Processing the data symbol estimates compensates phase noise that is greater than one decision region of the symbol constellation.

  • Patent number: 9537608
Abstract: In a Forward Error Correction (FEC) technique, parity vectors are computed such that: each parity vector spans a set of frames; a subset of bits of each frame is associated with parity bits in each parity vector; and a location of parity bits associated with one frame in one parity vector is different from that of parity bits associated with the frame in another parity vector. Values of decoded bits of a first frame are deduced from known parity bits of a first parity vector having an effective length of one frame. For parity vectors having, an effective length greater than one frame, a Log Likelihood Ratio of each unknown parity bit associated with the first frame is updated based on known and unknown parity bits of each parity vector. The first frame is decoded using the deduced bit values and the updated LLR values.

  • Publication number: 20160344482
Abstract: A method for preventing nonlinear interference in an optical communication system. The method may include selecting an optical signal of a first optical channel. The method may include determining an estimate of inter-channel nonlinear interference to the optical signal of the first optical channel. The inter-channel nonlinear interference may be generated by one or more optical signals transmitted over a second optical channel in the optical communication system. The method may include determining one or more linear filters based on the estimate of the inter-channel nonlinear interference. The method may include pre-distorting an optical signal for transmission over the second optical channel using the one or more linear filters. The pre-distorted optical signal may be configured for reducing the inter-channel nonlinear interference to the first optical signal of the first optical channel.

  • Patent number: 9088387
Abstract: A method of recovering a value of a symbol received through an optical communications system. A multi-bit estimate of the symbol is subdivided into a first part and a second part, each part including at least one respective bit of the estimate. A most likely value of the first part is detected. The most likely value of the first part is processed using a Forward Error Correction (FEC) decoder to generate a corrected first part value, which is used to detect a most likely value of the second part. The most likely value of the second part is then processed by the FEC decoder to generate a corrected second part, which is combined with the corrected first part to recover the value of the symbol.
