  • Publication number: 20090207182
Abstract: The deterioration (darkness) of image quality due to a reduction in the brightness of a single color as a result of the conversion from RGB pixels to RGBW pixels is prevented and a reduction in the power is achieved. A processing portion for conversion from RGB to RGBW 106 is formed of a W generating circuit 201, which is the same as in the prior art, a sub-pixel rendering circuit 202, a W intensity calculating portion 203 which transmits a W intensity setting value 205 to a W generating circuit 201, and a low power backlight control circuit 204 which expands data on the basis of the RGBW pixels generated by the sub-pixel rendering portion 202 and lowers the backlight in accordance with the amount by which the data is expanded. The inputted RGB data is used as the RGBW data with the W intensity calculated by the W intensity calculating portion 203. A backlight control signal is generated in accordance with the amount of data expansion in the sub-pixel rendering portion 202.

  • Publication number: 20090185123
Abstract: In an IPS type liquid crystal display device, it is attempted to improve display quality. In the IPS type liquid crystal display device, in the case where a liquid crystal layer is of a positive liquid crystal, a counter electrode is divided for each display line. When two adjacent display lines are defined as one display line and the other display line, respectively, a gap between the counter electrode of the one display line and the counter electrode of the other display line extends in a direction of the display line as a whole while bending locally. The gap has a first portion extending along an extending direction of a video line and a second portion extending from the first portion along a direction crossing the video line. An initial alignment axis of the liquid crystal layer is in a direction within a range of +5° to +20° or ?5° to ?20° clockwise with respect to the video line.

  • Patent number: 7522146
Abstract: A scanning-line selecting circuit is configured by connecting basic circuits with each other over plural stages. Each of the basic circuits includes a basic scanning-line driving circuit and a voltage raising circuit. A basic scanning signal is inputted into the basic scanning-line driving circuit, which, then, outputs a scanning signal. A charge pulse, a selecting signal, and a discharge pulse are inputted into the voltage raising circuit, which, then, drives the basic scanning-line driving circuit. Accordingly, in the basic circuits, there exists none of the problems of threshold-value shift and voltage lowering. This characteristic makes it possible to implement high efficiency and stable operation.

  • Publication number: 20090086466
Abstract: A planar light emitting element is capable of outputting light having high directivity in at least one direction. The planar light emitting element has a light guide plate and first and second low refractive index layers. Light incident on the light guide plate is totally reflected on the interface between the light guide plate and the second low refractive index layer, propagates in the light guide plate, and is output from the light guide plate to the first low refractive index layer through a light output opening section. When a refractive index of the first low refractive index layer is sufficiently smaller than a refractive index of the light guide plate, the light propagates in the light guide plate at a large angle with respect to a light output surface of the light guide plate. When the difference between the refractive indexes of the first and second low refractive index layers is small, a spreading angle of light output to the first low refractive index layer is small.
