  • Publication number: 20050027719
Abstract: The present invention aims to dynamically re-configure hosts and storage in a shared-nothing database. In the shared-nothing database, processes 24 to 29 executed in the hosts 11 to 14 access data of a storage device 30. A system manager 70 and a database manager 10 manage the hosts 11 to 14 and the storage device 30. The processes 24 to 29 access one or more disks 51 to 54 of the storage device. To add or reduce the number of the hosts, the processes 24 to 29 are reassigned among the hosts 11 to 14.

  • Patent number: 6813684
Abstract: Disclosed is a disk system for controlling divided areas of a cache memory. Identification information that denotes whether data to be accessed is user data or meta data is added to each I/O command issued from a CPU. A disk controller, when receiving such an I/O command, selects a target virtual area from among a plurality of virtual areas set in the cache memory according to the identification information. When new data is to be stored in the cache memory upon the execution of the I/O command, the disk controller records the number of the selected virtual area in the cache memory in correspondence with the new data. A cache data replacement is executed independently for each cache area, thereby a predetermined upper limit size of each cache memory area can be kept.

  • Publication number: 20040193583
Abstract: A method for duplicating transactions in a disaster recover system is disclosed. In this method, transactions and queries input to a primary database system are copied to a secondary database system and both database systems execute the queries and save the results permanently to each database, thereby maintaining duplicated data. When executing a query on the primary database system, if the query is a commit, the primary system simultaneously copies uncopied queries placed in a queue to the secondary database system and then executes the query. By using this processing procedure, the invention realizes a disaster recovery system which carries out copying transactions from one site to another site without losing the transactions, while reducing the influence of copy operation on the transaction processing performance.

  • Publication number: 20040193739
Abstract: Since no control of accesses made by a computer as accesses to a storage apparatus is executed, the computer can be used illegally to steal and improperly change data stored in the storage apparatus. Thus, an access-control mechanism external to the computer is constructed to solve this problem. That is to say, the control of accesses is executed in the storage apparatus and a network apparatus for each program executed by the computer. In order to enhance the implementability of such control of accesses, the control is executed without extending a variety of protocols of communications among the computer, the network apparatus and the storage apparatus. By implementing the control of accesses in this way, a program other than programs specified in advance is not capable of making an access to data stored in the storage apparatus. Thus, even if the computer is used illegally, data stored in the storage apparatus can be prevented from being stolen and changed improperly.

  • Publication number: 20040186829
Abstract: An object of the present invention is to avoid contention for resources in a parallel/decentralized database system so as to improve the performance of the system. A query posing method is implemented in a database system comprising a plurality of database servers each of which includes a database from which the same content can be retrieved and searches the database in response to a query request a front-end server that poses a query according to a predetermined rule and a management server that manages rules to be used by the front-end server. The management server acquires a processed query log relevant to a database server, and produces a rule according to the compatibility value of a query calculated using the acquired processed query log. Moreover, the front-end server poses the query according to the rule produced by the management server.

  • Publication number: 20040019655
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for forming such a virtual network storage with use of general network storages and through the processings by a network storage accessing protocol without using any of dedicated network storages, concentrated management servers, and distributed directories, wherein the virtual network storage, when receiving a READDIR request from a client in step 301, transfers the received READDIR request to each network storage in step 302, then receives READDIR responses from the network storages. The virtual network storage then combines the READDIR responses from the network storages and sends the result to the client.

  • Publication number: 20040019615
Abstract: A method for backing up the data of a disk array system having network file server and storage area network functions easily and rapidly without using a route for data to be not backed up. Upon receipt of a backup request, a network file server module copies files on the disk array system's regular volumes to a backup volume. The network file server module then requests a storage area network module to copy the files to an external storage device. Finally, the storage area network module copies the current contents of the backup volume to the external storage device. The network file server module can limit the data to be backed up, thereby reducing the backup time requirements. The load on a LAN does not increase because the storage area network module acquires the data to be backed up. The processing speed increases thanks to backup load distribution within the disk array system.

  • Publication number: 20030212855
Abstract: Disclosed is a disk system for controlling divided areas of a cache memory, which improves the cache hit percentage by preventing data to be accessed so frequently from being swapped out from the cache memory by data not to be accessed so frequently. Identification information is added to each I/O command issued from a CPU. The identification information denotes whether data to be accessed is user data or meta data. A disk controller, when receiving such an I/O command, selects a target virtual area from among a plurality of virtual areas set in the cache memory according to the identification information added to the received I/O command. When new data is to be stored in the cache memory upon the execution of the I/O command, the disk controller records the number of the selected virtual area in the cache memory in correspondence with the new data. Consequently, it is determined which area includes the new data stored segment.

  • Publication number: 20030140051
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of virtualizing a plurality of network storages into a single-view file system for a client and obtains information about an object's storage location without inquiring of a resource manager. The method determines a network storage that should store an object based on a hash value generated from a logical identifier for the object to be accessed. While accessing the object, the method computes the hash value for the object's logical identifier to determine a network storage that should process an access request. Consequently, the method eliminates the need to inquire the object's storage location when the access request is issued. Further, the method eliminates the need to maintain the object's storage location when the number of servers is increased or decreased, thus providing easy management.

  • Publication number: 20020095405
Abstract: We propose an extension of the view function, called a view with mask, where we can define a mask condition and values for each column that will be applied to the result of query execution. We also provide a set of query rewrite algorithms to implement a view with mask. Then, we define semantics for a selection condition on mask columns, an aggregation on mask columns, and external references for mask conditions. A view with mask can keep a security level, called inference-free against coloring, i.e., if an initial relation is inference-free against coloring, then a result of a query on the relation is also inference-free against coloring.

  • Patent number: 6381601
Abstract: In order to realize high speed process for grouping the records having the identical values of one or more columns of the input list, the input list is canned, a hash value is generated using a hash function in which a value of the column as the non-vacant partial aggregation of the columns for the grouping is used as the argument, and it is determined whether two or more records having the hash values exist or not. The input list is scanned again and the calculating process of the aggregation columns is immediately executed for the records having the hash value for which it is determined by the first scanning that there is only one record having the identical hash value, the result of such calculating process is output and the records are defined as the input of the ordinary grouping process for the records which are determined to exist as the two or more records.
