  • Patent number: 8730912
Abstract: Techniques for deriving message counts based at least in part on a locally stored message count and at least a portion of a message count received from a remote network node are disclosed. The message counts can relate to downlink (DL) non-access stratum (NAS) counts. In one aspect, a device can receive a number of least significant bits of the DL NAS count in a handover message. The device can derive a DL NAS count by utilizing a remaining portion of most significant bits of a locally stored DL NAS count, and can determine whether to increment or decrement the most significant bits based at least in part on a parameter to handle cases where the least significant bits of the locally stored DL NAS count have wrapped due to overflow and/or underflow.

  • Publication number: 20140105125
Abstract: A UE determines a need to deactivate one or more bearer contexts. The UE then selects for deactivation one or more active bearer contexts based on a context selection criteria, to avoid exceeding a maximum number of allowable active bearer contexts for the UE. The context selection criteria may relate to one or more of: current usage of active bearer contexts, information from applications associated with active bearer contexts, priority level of applications associated with active bearer contexts, order of active bearer context creation, measure of data activity through active bearer contexts, quality of service associated with active bearer contexts, type of service, e.g. voice or data, for which bearer contexts were activated, bandwidth allocations of active bearer contexts, a criteria predefined by the UE, network or user, or a random selection. Once one or more active bearer contexts have been selected, the UE deactivates the selected active bearer contexts.

  • Publication number: 20140099952
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for avoiding attempts by a UE to attach to a RAT network when that RAT network is unavailable. According to certain aspects, the UE may detect scenarios when the RAT network is unavailable and take preemptive action to prevent the UE from attempting to acquire service on that RAT. For example, the UE may effectively remove that RAT from a list of supported RATs by sending a UE capability message indicating that RAT is not supported, which may prevent network-initiated transitions of the UE to that RAT. The UE may also remove the unavailable RAT from an internal list of supported RATs, which may prevent UE-initiated transitions to that RAT.

  • Publication number: 20130196663
Abstract: In certain wireless communication systems, requests for connecting to a radio access technology (RAT) may be ambiguous depending on the communication configuration. For example, in certain RAT priority lists an ambiguity may exist when determining whether a UE should prioritize connection to a TD-SCDMA or WCDMA network. To remove this ambiguity, an indicator may be set in the memory of the UE to indicate network priority in the event of ambiguity. Network prioritization may be based at least in part on the indicator.

  • Patent number: 8478269
Abstract: Techniques for enabling a user equipment (UE) to return to a wireless network after failure to obtain a particular service (e.g., voice service) are described. The UE may determine that the wireless network does not support the particular service at a first location (e.g., the current UE location). In response, the UE may disable the wireless network and may refrain from attempting to obtain the particular service (or possibly any service) from the wireless network. The UE may thereafter re-enable the wireless network based on a trigger, which may result from a timer, an event, or broadcast information from another wireless network. After re-enabling the wireless network, the UE may perform cell search and system selection and may detect and select the wireless network. The UE may determine that the wireless network supports the particular service at a second location and may obtain the particular service from the wireless network.

  • Publication number: 20130084897
Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure propose systems and methods for managing assignment of short message service (SMS) message identifications (IDs) in a multimode device (e.g., mobile station). The proposed methods ensure that a unique message ID is assigned to each SMS transmitted by the mobile station (MS). Each retransmission of the SMS messages may be assigned a message ID similar to or the same as the previous transmission(s) of the SMS message. As a result, a network messaging center may be able to identify duplicate SMS messages that are marked with unique message IDs even if they are transmitted on different air interfaces and/or by different modems (modulators/demodulators).

  • Publication number: 20130070728
Abstract: Certain aspects of the present disclosure relate to techniques for improving a circuit-switched fallback (CSFB) user experience. In aspects, methods and systems for autonomously returning a user equipment (UE) from a 2G (2nd generation)/3G (3rd generation) network to an LTE (Long Term Evolution) network are provided. The UE may store a flag to note whether a current circuit switched (CS) call in the 2G/3G network is a result of a CSFB. The UE, in response to detecting a termination of the current CS call in the 2G/3G network and determining that the terminated call was a CSFB call (e.g., from the status of the flag), may trigger a mobility mechanism to autonomously return the UE to the LTE network.

  • Publication number: 20120302241
Abstract: Network re-selection by an idle mobile device between multiple radio access technologies (RATs) is provided for communication networks without a network-based solution. When a user equipment (UE) enters idle mode while camped to a first RAT network, it initiates an out of service search procedure that causes the UE to search for other RATs within a same public land mobile network (PLMN). If another RAT network is detected, the UE determines whether the priority of the detected RAT is higher than the priority of the first RAT. When the detected RAT has a higher priority than the first RAT, the UE re-selects and camps to that detected RAT network. If the detected RAT does not have a higher priority or no other RAT is detected within the PLMN, the UE re-camps to the first RAT network.

  • Publication number: 20120236709
Abstract: A method is provided for facilitating preservation of session context information during an inter-radio access technology service retry. A user equipment (UE) may initiate a data transmission for a first service over a wireless communication session with a first network. Upon ascertaining that the first service has failed over the first network, a failover procedure is initiated by sending a service request for a second service to the first network. The second service may be distinct from the first service and has the effect of suspending the wireless communication session with the first network. The UE then resends the data transmission for the first service over a second network. The UE then resumes use of the wireless communication session over the first network after resending the data transmission over the second network. This resumption is done by using context information for the wireless communication session preserved prior to the suspension.
