  • Patent number: 10149225
Abstract: Systems and methods are described for selecting relay nodes for Single-User Multiple-Input-Multiple Output (SU-MIMO). A channel orthogonality and Signal-to-Interference-Plus-Noise Ratio (SINR) of a plurality of wireless devices located in a geographic area of an access node is determined. A relay-capable status of the plurality of wireless devices is determined. Non-relay capable wireless devices located in the geographic area are excluded from SU-MIMO. From the plurality of wireless devices, relay-capable wireless devices are selected for SU-MIMO. The selected relay-capable wireless devices are prioritized for SU-MIMO based on a channel orthogonality and SINR meeting a set threshold.

  • Patent number: 10129175
Abstract: Systems and methods are described for performing carrier aggregation based on subframe configuration. It may be determined that conditions for a wireless device in communication with an access node meet a carrier aggregation criteria, wherein the access node and wireless device communicate using a first subframe configuration. Signal information may be received from the wireless device comprising received signal levels for a plurality of candidate secondary carriers. Subframe configurations used by the candidate secondary carriers to communicate with wireless devices may be retrieved. One or more of the plurality of candidate secondary carriers may be selected based on the received signal level information and the retrieved subframe configurations. And carrier aggregation may be activated such that the one or more selected secondary carriers are used to transmit downlink data to the wireless device.

  • Patent number: 10117133
Abstract: A relay node is enabled to transmit, to an end-user wireless device, any data packets remaining in a buffer associated with the end-user wireless device, prior to executing a handover of the end-user wireless device. Upon initiating a handover, the relay node adjusts a scheduling operation to use a lowest-possible modulating coding scheme (MCS) in order to transmit the remaining buffered data to the end-user wireless device. Moreover, the scheduling operation is adjusted to ignore any subsequent channel quality indicator (CQI) reports from the end-user wireless device, thereby ensuring that the end-user wireless device has a higher chance of receiving the data. When the buffer is empty, the handover is executed.

  • Patent number: 10021616
Abstract: Upon a determination that a relay backhaul link of a relay node is using excessive resources of a donor access node, wireless devices attached to the relay node are offloaded to other access nodes such as neighbor access nodes or to a different frequency band deployed by the donor access node or its neighbors. A donor access node transmits a congestion indicator to the relay node. The relay node transmits updated measurement parameters to end-user wireless devices connected thereto. An end-user wireless device reports back to the relay node in the event it measures a signal strength that is stronger than the current signal strength. This measurement event triggers a handoff of the end-user wireless device, thereby helping to alleviate the resource utilization of the air-interface of the donor access node.

  • Patent number: 9986487
Abstract: A donor base station in a wireless communication network exchanges first user data with a wireless relay using a standard communication throughput. A relay control system in the wireless communication network exchanges data with the wireless relay over the donor base station and the neighboring base station. The relay control system detects Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (ICIC) between the wireless relay and the neighboring base station and in response, the relay control system identifies the donor base station serving the wireless relay and signaling the donor base station of the ICIC between the wireless relay and the neighboring base station. The donor base station receives the signaling and reduces the standard communication throughput of the wireless relay. The donor base station then exchanges second user data with the wireless relay using the reduced communication throughput.

  • Publication number: 20180103412
Abstract: A wireless relay receives a user network Identifier (ID) and a relay network ID. The wireless relay attaches to the relay network responsive to the relay network ID. The wireless relay broadcasts the user network ID and User Equipment (UEs) attach to the wireless relay responsive to the user network ID. The wireless relay exchanges user data with the UEs over user network carrier aggregation links. The wireless relay exchanges the user data with the relay network over relay network carrier aggregation links. Responsive to carrier aggregation loading, the wireless relay receives an instruction to terminate the user network carrier aggregation links, and the wireless relay terminates the user network carrier aggregation links. The wireless relay now exchanges the user data with the UEs over non-carrier aggregation links. The wireless relay continues to exchange the user data with the relay network over the relay network carrier aggregation links.

  • Patent number: 9913181
Abstract: Described embodiments can help a user equipment (UE) participate in a handover procedure that is carried out by the UE's serving base station. In particular, when a neighbor sector is heavily loaded, the base station that serves the neighbor sector may vary the power in at least one reference signal in each subframe in the neighbor sector, thereby providing an indication of the heavy traffic load to UEs that receive the subframe. When a UE is being served by a different base station than the base station that serves the neighbor sector, and the UE detects such load information for a neighbor sector, the UE may report the load information to its serving base station, or may simply refrain from sending a signal strength report that could trigger a handover to the neighbor sector.
