  • Patent number: 9072022
Abstract: A wireless communication device comprises a wireless communication transceiver and a processing system. The wireless communication transceiver is configured to measure reference signal received power (RSRP) values and reference signal received quality (RSRQ) values of a plurality of candidate sectors. The processing system is configured to determine a greatest relative difference between the RSRP values of the candidate sectors. If the greatest relative difference between the RSRP values of the candidate sectors falls below a power threshold, the processing system is configured to direct the wireless communication transceiver to transfer the RSRP values of the candidate sectors and one of the RSRQ values associated with a strongest candidate sector that has a greatest RSRP value of the candidate sectors, and if the greatest relative difference between the RSRP values of the candidate sectors exceeds the power threshold, the RSRP values of the candidate sectors are transferred.

  • Patent number: 8768310
Abstract: In systems and methods of providing a notification message in a wireless communication system, a message notifier is received at a processing node in wireless communication system based on a first message from a sender. The message notifier comprises sender information. The sender information is matched to a contact entry of the recipient to generate a matching criteria. Based on the matching criteria a paging channel power is determined for a notification message to be sent to the recipient wireless device.

  • Patent number: 8731589
Abstract: Disclosed are a method and apparatus for sending a communication to destination client devices. The communication has two message sets: an address set containing an address list and a content set containing content. Both the address set and the content set include one or more messages. The address list includes at least one address for each destination client device. Example content types are text, hyperlinks, web pages, audio, images, and video. Each message of both message sets may be sent separately to a network entity, such as a short message service center. When both message sets are received at the network entity, the network entity may correlate the address set with the content set and responsively send the content to each address in the address list.

  • Publication number: 20140133461
Abstract: A method and apparatus for handing off packet-transmission between sectors of a wireless communication system is disclosed herein. During transmission of a packet from an access network to an access terminal, the access terminal determines that the packet should theoretically be transmitted to the access terminal in fewer timeslots in another sector than the number of allowed timeslots remaining for the packet transmission in a current sector. In response, the access terminal abandons packet transmission in the current sector and hands off to the other sector, in an effort to increase throughput and save air interface resources.

  • Patent number: 8688162
Abstract: A method and system for reducing latency by anticipating responsive data communications is described. When the user of a first mobile station receives a message sent from a second mobile station, the user of the first mobile station may responsively reply. If, before the reply is sent, the second mobile station releases its network radio link and goes dormant, the reply may be delayed as the radio link is set up again after the reply is sent. To reduce this latency, the first mobile station may monitor its user's actions and, upon an indication that the user intends to soon reply to the earlier received message, the first mobile station may send a signal into the network which causes the second mobile station to maintain its radio link or to set up a new radio link if it has gone dormant.

  • Patent number: 8600378
Abstract: Methods for evaluating an access probe transmitted by a wireless communication device (WCD) in a wireless communication system are disclosed. When an access probe is received by a radio access network (RAN), the RAN determines if the WCD that transmitted the access probe is physically located outside a predetermined distance from the RAN. If the WCD is located outside the predetermined distance from the RAN, the RAN evaluates whether a threshold air interface condition is met as part of a determination to accept the access probe and establish communication between the RAN and the WCD.

  • Patent number: 8363622
Abstract: Exemplary methods and systems may be used by a mobile station to request that a sector be removed from its active set, and by a radio access network (RAN) to facilitate such a request. An exemplary method involves (a) a mobile station receiving a congestion indicator in each active sector of an active set of the mobile station, wherein the congestion indicators are received from a RAN; (b) the mobile station using the received congestion indicators as a basis for selecting at least one high-congestion sector from the active set; and (c) the mobile station providing an indication of the at least one high-congestion sector to the RAN. Further, the mobile station may perform steps (b)-(c) in response to a determination that the battery power for the mobile station is below the threshold level.

  • Patent number: 8265660
Abstract: Methods are described for handling an incoming call at a mobile switching center when the mobile station is currently in either an access state (in the process of making an outgoing call) or in a paging state (in the process of receiving an earlier incoming call). The mobile switching center waits until the mobile station transitions out of the access state or paging state into a traffic state. The mobile switching center sends an alert message to the mobile station alerting the user of the new incoming call. The mobile switching center handles the incoming call per a response to the alert message. One option would be to send the new incoming call to the user and drop the other incoming call (or the outgoing call). Another option would be to direct the incoming call to voice mail. In either case, the handling of the incoming call is per the user's direction, i.e., as dictated by the response message.

  • Patent number: 8244255
Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for basing a handoff of a mobile device on its position within a coverage area of a source base transceiver station (BTS) are provided. Initially, embodiments involve recording threshold distances, associated with candidate BTSs neighboring the source BTS, and capturing pilot strength measurement messages (PSMM's) at each of the threshold distances. Upon establishing a connection to the source BTS, the position of the mobile device is monitored to detect a traversal of the threshold distances. Consequently, the mobile device reports a current PSMM for comparison against the captured PSMM's. If any messages correspond, a candidate BTS is selected for receiving the connection of the mobile device. Otherwise, the connection to the source BTS is maintained. Accordingly, the distance of the mobile device from the source BTS at which the handoff is invoked may vary based on a radial direction of the mobile device therefrom.

  • Patent number: 8229493
Abstract: Systems and methods for dynamically adjusting a metric that influences power management of an access terminal are provided. Initially, an access node is configured to distribute reverse-activity bits (RAB's) to the access terminal, which conveys data, at a particular rate, to the access node. Adjusting the dynamic metric involves establishing a number of slots allocated for a filtered reverse-activity bit (FRAB) window and a hybrid reverse-activity bit (HRAB) window, wherein each of the slots are allocated to accept a RAB. The RAB's accepted to the slots of the FRAB window and the HRAB window are recursively averaged to derive a FRAB parameter and an HRAB parameter, respectively. The dynamic metric is adjusted by incorporating either the FRAB parameter or an HRAB parameter therein based on whether ramping conditions are satisfied. The rate of data conveyed from the access terminal is controlled based on the adjusted dynamic metric.

  • Patent number: 8107430
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method for selecting one or more capsules in which to include a traffic channel assignment message. The method may involve: (a) receiving a request from an access terminal to engage in a communication session; (b) making a determination as to whether or not the communication session is of a type that is designated for priority service; and (c) using the determination of whether or not the requested communication session is of a type that is designated for priority service as a basis for selecting one or more capsules in which to include the traffic channel assignment message. According to an exemplary embodiment, for priority communications, the TCA message is sent in all sectors identified in a route update message from the access terminal, and for non-priority communication sessions, control channel occupancy and pilot-signal strength to select sectors for the TCA message.
