  • Publication number: 20050071666
Abstract: A method and system for managing software according to a physical location of a computer that is to execute the software. The operating system of the computer is modified to contain a location service that is able to determine the exact physical location of the computer. When the computer's operating system requests that a software application be loaded into system memory, the computer's location service determines the exact current physical location of the computer using a satellite Global Positioning System (GPS) or similar system. This location is compared to a list of authorized location ranges. If the computer is within an authorized location range, the software is allowed to load into system memory and execute as long as the computer remains within the authorized area. If the computer is not within an authorized area, then the software is not allowed to load into system memory and thus cannot execute.

  • Publication number: 20050071619
Abstract: A method and system for managing a secure network boot of a server blade. The server blade is part of a server blade chassis, which holds multiple server blades that communicate with outside devices via a Pre-boot eXecution Environment (PXE) enabled network interface card. When a server blade receives a response from a PXE boot server offering a boot program download, a Remote Supervisory Adapter (RSA) card, managed by a remote manager, compares the identity of the responding PXE boot server with a list of trusted PXE boot servers. Only if the responding PXE boot server is on the list of trusted PXE boot servers will the server blade be allowed to use a boot program provided by the responding PXE boot server.

  • Publication number: 20050071587
Abstract: A method and system for method of removing a node from a multi-node computer. The node receives a system management interrupt (SMI), resulting in a quiescenting of only that node. The SMI receiving node then polls other nodes in the multi-node computer to determine if the SMI affects an operation of any of the other nodes, and quiescents any other node affected by the SMI. Each quiescent node then transfers all of the contents of its system memory to a backup memory in an unaffected remote node in the multi-node computer. The remote node than assumes the function of the removed node that had received the SMI. The method and system thus allows node removal in the event of a hot-swap request or a predicted failure of a node.

  • Publication number: 20050071675
Abstract: A method and system for managing a secure network boot of a secondary server (server blade). The server blade sends a request, via an Ethernet switch, for a boot program to multiple Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers. One of the DHCP servers responds with an address of at least one Pre-boot Execution Environment (PXE) server that can upload a boot program to the server blade. Only if the responding DHCP server is on a list of known trusted DHCP servers will the Ethernet switch allow the server blade to receive the response from the responding DHCP server, thus allowing the download of a boot program from a PXE server.

  • Publication number: 20050071480
Abstract: A method and system for managing a secure configuration of a server blade on a network. The server blade has a Remote Supervisor Adapter (RSA) card, which contains a list of trusted Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers. A remote manager, which communicates with the RSA card via a hyper-secure network, maintains the list of trusted DHCP servers on the RSA card. When the server blade broadcasts a request for configuration parameters to join the network, a response offer is returned from a DHCP server. If the responding DHCP server is not on the list of trusted DHCP servers contained in the RSA card, then the offer is refused, and another DHCP server's offer is evaluated.

  • Publication number: 20050010834
Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining the write delay time of a memory are provided. The apparatus includes a CPU, a memory, a north bridge chipset, a south bridge and a BIOS. The north bridge chipset, which is connected to the CPU and the memory, writes a pattern to the memory according to different write delay times. The BIOS reads the pattern stored in the memory, and checks the correctness of the read pattern to determine the common write delay time.

  • Publication number: 20040268037
Abstract: Secondary or augmented control of a storage array in a cost effective manner is accomplished by connecting a host to the storage array via a storage adapter independent of a RAID controller. The RAID controller provides primary control for services standard to the RAID controller. Augmented or enhanced services as well as backup control are provided by a control module executing on the host, communicating to one or more selected storage devices within the storage array via the storage adapter. In one embodiment, the control module detects faults or failures in the RAID controller, selectably directs storage commands to the RAID controller, emulates a storage controller including a RAID controller, and provides enhanced or augmented services such as conducting diagnostic, firmware update, or disaster recovery operations.

  • Publication number: 20040216017
Abstract: A control circuit for testing a memory control module is provided. The memory control module includes first and second memory blocks. The control circuit includes a processing unit and a control chip. The processing unit executes a memory testing program specific to the first memory block, and asserts data read/write commands. The control chip is in communication with the processing unit and the memory control module, and accesses to the first and second memory blocks of the memory control module for test in response to the data read/write commands in first and second states, respectively. A mapping circuit and one or more selected address lines between the control chip and the memory control module are used to switch the states of the data read/write commands.

  • Publication number: 20040003082
Abstract: This invention is useful in a networked system with densely packaged servers or server blades. The servers are connected to a system management network, a communication network and an image server. A management module attached to the system management network and a network switch monitors and controls network booting from an image server on the communication network to prevent over commitment of network and image server resources in order to avoid a boot storm. The management module collects system information and calculates the number of servers or clients the networked system can boot at any one instant of time without burdening the system. The management module logic controls booting via the system management network and service processor elements, which can block server booting and release servers to boot when other servers have completed their boot process.

  • Patent number: 6651812
Abstract: A support means for golf clubs comprising four parts. The first, second and third parts having a plurality of recesses for the golf club heads, the third part also being a cover for the golf club heads in the recesses of the first part and the second part. The fourth part of the cover providing a final cover to protect the golf clubs from dust and scratching. A cover so arranged has the advantage of fixing the position of various golf clubs (irons and woods) in a golf club bag. The golf clubs are held in position in the bag so that they will not scratch one another and making noises when being carried. The four parts of the cover are of transparent polymer material to allow the golf clubs to be seen through the cover which is advantageous for displaying purposes in shops.

  • Patent number: 6636958
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and hard disk configuration for accommodating different sizes of applications during an automatic re-provisioning of an appliance server. The disk drive of the appliance server is partitioned with a system partition, a network operating system (NOS) partition, a float partition, and an images partition. The float partition is utilized to provide additional space to the NOS partition and the images partition, when required. A re-provisioning utility is provided, which initiates both a create image utility and an apply image utility, whereby an image file of a current application and associated operating system is created and a stored image file of a second application is installed on the appliance server. When the apply image utility is initiated, the NOS partition is dynamically extended into the float partition server if the second application requires more space than is provided in the NOS partition.
