Publication number: 20220058319Abstract: A method for calculating a valve closure time includes performing a computational fluid dynamics model simulation of the valve. The method also includes performing multiple functional performance analysis model simulations of the valve based on the computational fluid dynamics model simulation of the valve to calculate the valve closure time. The functional performance analysis model simulations are based on a numerical solution of a second order differential equation according to an equation of motion given by: (I), where mL is a mass of translating components, y(t) is a piston displacement at a given time t, F? is a force on the valve due to fluid flow, E? is a friction force, FD is a hydraulic damping force on the piston, FD is a spring force, FPPA is a hydraulic piston pressure assist force, FBPA is a hydraulic bore pressure assist force, and FG is a force due to gravity.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 6, 2019Publication date: February 24, 2022Inventors: Gordon Howat, Phillip Agius, Rezana Zarshat, Simon Roberts

Patent number: 9505698Abstract: In a process for recovering water, metals, soluble organics and insoluble organics from a process for the production of a polycarboxylic acid, the stream is cooled to a temperature at which dissolved organics precipitate. The precipitate organics are separated from a liquid stream and recycled to the production process. The liquid stream is then treated with an alkali to convert remaining organics to the alkali salt form and the metals present to be converted to an insoluble form. The insoluble metals are recovered from a liquid stream and this liquid stream, with the alkali salts of the organics, is passed to a membrane separation unit where it is separated into a permeate comprising water and a retentate comprising water and alkali organic salts. The permeate is recovered and recycled to the production process. The retentate also is recovered.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2014Date of Patent: November 29, 2016Assignee: Johnson Matthey Davy Technologies LimitedInventors: Simon Roberts, Julian Stuart Gray

Patent number: 8732673Abstract: System and method for automatically identifying a source of a run-time error in a computer system comprises a static analysis system (SAS), an instrumentation system (IS) and a post-execution analysis system (PEAS). The is arranged to generate static analysis data on computer program code (CPC) for the computer system, including information on possible behaviors of the CPC when executed. The IS is arranged to instrument the CPC by inserting marker triggers into the CPC that, generate a marker associated with each of a number of predetermined points in the CPC that would be reached during execution of the CPC. Each marker is, uniquely identifiable. The predetermined points are determined in dependence on the static analysis data. The PEASpost execution analysis system is arranged to processes data on a run-time error produced by execution of the instrumented CPC, wherein the generated markers and the static analysis data to identify the source of the run-time error.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 2011Date of Patent: May 20, 2014Assignee: ITI Scotland LimitedInventors: Robert Finking, Simon Roberts, Graham Hewson

Patent number: 8334401Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the production of diols with a special structure which are characterized by formula (I). These diols are substances which, besides two OH groups, contain a C?C double bond so that they are suitable as monomers for the production of polymers. The process comprises hydrolyzing a corresponding cyclic precursor in aqueous medium in the presence of an acid dissolved in that medium, the hydrolysis being accompanied by the elimination of a carbonyl compound, and subsequently neutralizing the acid present in the reaction mixture with a base, the base having a pKb value above 0.18 and preferably above 3.0 and being present in heterogeneous form.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 2008Date of Patent: December 18, 2012Assignee: Cognis IP Management GmbHInventors: Peter McKenna, Mark Smallridge, Melissa Matthews, Simon Roberts

Patent number: 7836003Abstract: Briefly, in accordance with one or more embodiments, a user experiencing cognitive decline or a similar affliction may be assisted with the performance of daily tasks or routines. An information handling system installed in a central room of the user's living quarters, such as a kitchen, to observe the user and determine if the user is having difficulty completing the task or routine. If it is determined that the user is experiencing difficulty, the information handling system may provide one or more cues to the user to assist the user in remembering what the user has just completed in order to indicate to the user what part of the task remains to be completed. For example, the steps recently taken by the user may be retraced by projecting an image of those footsteps onto the floor to show the user where she has recently been.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 2007Date of Patent: November 16, 2010Assignee: Intel CorporationInventors: Terry Dishongh, Simon Roberts, Julie Behan

Publication number: 20060147163Abstract: This invention relates to an optical cable, in particular to an optical fibre having an axially extending glass strand for channelling light therealong, and a jacket layer disposed around the glass strand, the jacket layer having a textured outer surface for facilitating, under the influence of a fluid drag, the advancement of the optical cable along a conduit, wherein the glass strand in cross section to the axial direction has a width of less than 100 microns. The reduced width of the glass strand(s) in the cable will cause the cable to be less stiff, which will be particularly beneficially when installing the cable using a blowing technique.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 3, 2004Publication date: July 6, 2006Inventors: Andrew Mayhew, Nicholas Medlen, Neil Rabone, Simon Roberts
