  • Publication number: 20170094565
Abstract: Devices and methods for handling phone calls. One device is a user equipment (UE) configured to establish a connection with a first evolved Node B (eNB). A method includes transmitting an invite signal to a further UE for a Voice over LTE (VoLTE) call, receiving an accept signal from the further UE, receiving a fail signal from the first eNB that a dedicated bearer is unavailable, generating a trigger signal in response to receiving the fail signal and transmitting the trigger signal to the first eNB. Another device is a base station (e.g., eNB) that receives a VoLTE call request from a UE, determines whether the eNB has sufficient resources to provide a dedicated bearer. When it is determined the eNB has insufficient resources, the eNB determines whether a further eNB has sufficient resources to provide the dedicated bearer, and determines whether the UE can connect to the further eNB.

  • Patent number: 9603184
Abstract: A method is disclosed for coordinating a user equipment's communication with a network during tune back with C-DRX (connected mode discontinuous receive). When a user equipment tunes back to a network after a tune away or a signal fade, a scheduling request is sent to the network to indicate the tune back as quickly as possible. The user equipment waits for a downlink transmission from the network. When the user equipment does not receive the downlink transmission, the method determines if the connection between the user equipment and the network has been released. The sending of the first scheduling request and any additional scheduling requests is coordinated with the C-DRX configuration so as to maximize the battery savings of C-DRX and minimize the latency of the tune back process in case the user equipment has uplink data to send.

  • Patent number: 9603117
Abstract: This disclosure relates to network infrastructure identification by a wireless user equipment (UE) device. According to one embodiment, one or more requests for infrastructure identification information may be transmitted. Each request may indicate a current location of the UE. A respective response may be received to each corresponding respective request. Each respective response may include infrastructure identification information for the current location indicated in the corresponding respective request. Features such as vendor, type, model, or version of cellular network infrastructure equipment with which the UE performs cellular communication may be identified based on the response(s), and features specific to the identified equipment may accordingly be implemented during such cellular communication.

  • Publication number: 20170078934
Abstract: This disclosure relates to techniques for enabling a user equipment (UE) to determine which cell to attach to in a heterogeneous network (HetNet). The UE may determine, based on the quality of the downlink (DL) channel and/or on the type of traffic between the UE and a current base station, whether to attach to a small cell base station or an overlay macro base station in the cellular network. Particularly, the UE may determine whether to use a received mobility offset during cell reselection in response to a measured quality of the DL channel.

  • Patent number: 9596638
Abstract: Apparatus, system and methods for evaluating link quality within a cellular system. A user equipment (“UE”) is connected to a network, wherein the UE communicates data to the network on an uplink (“UL”) link. The UE determines a requested buffer size for a UL communication, determines a transport block size for the UL communication based on a primary set of allocation parameters, and compares the requested buffer size to the transport block size to determine if a data rate for the UL communication satisfies a threshold. When the data rate satisfies the threshold, the UE identifies the UL link as a good quality link and sends acceptable link quality feedback to the network. When the data rate does not satisfy the threshold, the UE performs a further action to test a quality of the UL link.

  • Patent number: 9591572
Abstract: A user equipment (UE) and corresponding methods to conserve power by the UE. The UE includes a transceiver, the transceiver configured to enable the UE to establish a connection with a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network and configured to operate using a Connected Discontinuous Reception (CDRX) functionality. The processor controls the transceiver by receiving an uplink (UL) grant at a first subframe of a frame of a cycle of the CDRX functionality, transmitting data based upon the UL grant at a predetermined second subframe, and receiving a response from the LTE network corresponding to one of an acknowledgement (ACK) and a negative ACK (NACK) at a predetermined third subframe. The processor deactivates the transmitter for a remainder of the frame based or deactivates a receiver for a remainder of the frame based upon whether the ACK is received.

  • Patent number: 9554302
Abstract: QoS based uplink data buffering while TTI bundling is enabled by a wireless user equipment (UE) device. The UE may establish a packet-switched connection with a network via a wireless link. The UE may receive, at a media access control (MAC) layer, an indication to enable TTI bundling. The UE may selectively buffer uplink data at an application layer based on the indication to enable TTI bundling. The uplink data may be buffered selectively based on Quality of Service (QoS) considerations. Uplink transmissions may subsequently be performed using TTI bundling.

  • Publication number: 20160373585
Abstract: In some embodiments, a UE is configured to, in response to detecting an absence of received packets associated with a voice call over a first time interval of a pre-determined length, initiate transmission of a first control packet to a base station. In some embodiments, the UE is further configured, based on a response to the first control packet, not to drop the packet-switched voice call at least until expiration of a second time interval of a pre-determined length after transmission of the first control packet. In some embodiments, the absence of received packets is an absence of both voice and silence packets. In some embodiments, based on absence of a response to the first control packet, the UE is configured to drop the packet-switched call.

  • Publication number: 20160360570
Abstract: A system and methodology that can limit and manage the number of multiple radio access bearer (mRAB) initiations, which are transitions from a Circuit Switched (CS) voice session, is provided. Moreover, the system, within a Radio Access Network (RAN), can identify vulnerable radio conditions for a user equipment (UE) on an uplink (UL) and/or a downlink (DL), and then subsequently determines whether a Packet Switched (PS) data session is allowed to pass through to the UE, during a CS voice call. In addition, the system can temporarily block a network-initiated data request to the existing CS voice call, if the voice call is likely to be dropped on initiating an mRAB. As the vulnerable radio conditions improve, the system can deliver the previously blocked data request to the UE.
