    Abstract: This invention relates to a process which significantly reduces the time for hydrolyzing a crosslinked maleic anhydride/lower alkyl vinyl ether copolymer to a clear gel which comprises suspending or dispersing fine granules of the crosslinked copolymer in deionized water and agitating the resulting dispersion or suspension for a period of between about 15 and about 130 minutes at a temperature of from about 60.degree. to about 90.degree. C. and then cooling the hydrolyzed mixture before introducing a basic neutralizing agent at a temperature of from about 15.degree. to about 85.degree. C. to produce a clear, homogeneous hydrolyzed gel having a Brookfield viscosity of from 5,000 to 250,000 cps.

The composition is substantially moisture resistant, provides a stiff resin film having excellent hair holding power, and has a relatively low concentration of volatile organic compounds therein. The composition of the invention attains its unique attributes by including therein a water soluble or dispersible alkylated polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) copolymer powders having a predetermined blend of two monomer components, one being PVP having a defined molecular weight (K-value 15-120, preferably 30-90) and concentration (80-99%, preferably 90-95%) and the other being an alkylene having a selected number of carbon atoms (C.sub.4 -C.sub.10, preferably (C.sub.6 -C.sub.8), linear or branched, in a defined concentration (1-20%, preferably 5-10%).

    Abstract: What is provided herein is a sunscreen composition consisting essentially of a crosslinked, neutralized terpolymer of maleic anhydride, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl vinyl ether and a C.sub.12 -C.sub.14 alpha-olefin monomer as a thickener; water; an ultraviolet sunscreening agent; and an emulsifier. In the preferred form of the invention, the monomers are present in a molar ratio of about 1:0.90-0.99:0.01-0.10, respectively, and are crosslinked with about 2-8 wt. % of a crosslinking agent based on the total weight of the monomers. Suitably, the crosslinked terpolymer is neutralized to increase water solubility.
