  • Publication number: 20130175235
Abstract: A system includes a container and an adapter. The container may include a wall defining a receptacle and a neck, the neck forming an opening and a passage in fluid communication between the receptacle and the opening; a closure assembly having a portion disposed within the neck, and including an insert defining a valve seat, an actuator, a valve member attached to the actuator and sealingly engageable with the valve seat, and a biasing member disposed between the insert and the actuator. The biasing member urges the valve member into sealing engagement with the valve seat in an actuator advanced state, and the valve member disengages from the valve seat in an actuator retracted state, the actuator depending through the opening in the advanced state. The adapter may be removably attached to the container, and configured to move the actuator from advanced to retracted state upon attachment.

  • Patent number: 8394080
Abstract: A needleless connector includes a housing having a housing passage with an open end, a slider disposed in the housing passage, and a mechanism to bias the slider toward the open end of the housing passage. The connector may also include a seal at the open end of the housing passage, the seal either cooperating with the slider to seal the open end of the connector, or sealing the open end of the connector without interaction with the slider, for example taking the form of a slit septum.

  • Patent number: 8221363
Abstract: A luer activated device includes an inlet adapted to receive a male luer, an outlet associable with a fluid flow system, and a fluid flow path therebetween. The flow path is defined by an elastomeric flow controller extending between the inlet and outlet and maintained in a tensioned state. When a male luer is inserted into the inlet, some of the tension in the flow controller is relieved, allowing the flow path to deform and change in volume. The flow path is adapted such that the change in volume results in no net fluid displacement or minimal positive fluid displacement when the male luer is inserted into the inlet. Other aspects include tensioned flow controllers having a plurality of sealing layers for the inlet and methods of manufacturing valves having a tensioned fluid flow controller.

  • Patent number: 8172823
Abstract: A port assembly includes a valve housing with an inlet opening, a valve disposed in the valve housing to control access through the inlet opening, and a base joined to the valve housing and having a bore therethrough. The bore has a closed end defined by a frangible barrier, and a pushrod is disposed in the bore between the valve and the frangible barrier, axial movement of the pushrod causing rupture of the frangible barrier. The port assembly may be used in a fluid container that includes a receptacle for retaining a fluid, and at least one conduit in communication with the receptacle. The at least one conduit is defined, at least in part, by a port assembly.

  • Publication number: 20100160889
Abstract: A spike assembly having an elongate spike defining a hollow cannula that is in fluid communication with the interior of a luer connection portion. The spike assembly provides needleless access to a stopper of a vial to facilitate injection and withdrawal of fluids via a syringe barrel selectively secured to the luer connection portion. The syringe can safely be removed from the spike assembly and then be directly attached to a luer compatible connector. The elongate spike may include a frangible tip portion that can break away from the spike assembly within a vial. The spike assembly may have a neck with a pair of gripping wing members. The spike assembly may have a feature that prevents rotation of the spike in the vial stopper, thereby allowing the syringe to be easily and safely disconnected from the spike assembly without having to grasp the spike assembly.

  • Patent number: 6669681
Abstract: A needless connector is provided which utilizes a resealable preslit septum valve. The valve is resiliently restrained relative to a housing with the valve and housing configured to accept a standard male luer lock having a luer tip which penetrates the valve through the opening to extend within the housing and a luer locking flange of the luer lock extending about the housing. The valve includes a disk shaped upper portion covering the opening, a lower portion spaced from the housing and extending downward from the disk shaped portion into a passageway defined by the housing, and an annular skirt to attach the septum to the housing. The connector exhibits satisfactory leak pressure after multiple connections and disconnects to the luer lock fitting and long periods of indwell of the luer tip.

  • Patent number: 6605076
Abstract: A pre-slit injection site includes a housing with a flow path therethrough. A first end of the housing carries a pre-slit septum. One form of a blunt cannula, usable with the injection site, carries a locking member. When the pre-slit injection site slidably receives the blunt cannula, the locking member latches to the injection site and creates a mechanically coupled unit. Another form of the cannula includes a tube having a tapered distal end region and having elongate discharge slots for reducing contact surface area and for directing the flow laterally out of the cannula. The cannula may also include a rounded lead post, an annular barb, and axially oriented grooves.
