  • Publication number: 20040064442
Abstract: An incremental search engine method, performed on a server computer system connected to a network, is disclosed. The method allows to provide incremental search results to a large number of users in a timely and efficient fashion, facilitating the discovery of new information on the Internet or in corporate intranets. Users submit queries, which are stored on the server computer system. Once a query has been submitted, it is automatically checked against any new or modified documents retrieved from the network by a difference crawler, and new matches are presented to the submitter of the query. In the case of modified documents, only the novel portion of the document is considered for determining the new matches.

  • Publication number: 20040062286
Abstract: A laser source is provided by the present invention, comprising a laser diode and has an active region with asymmetric distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) at either end to reflect light within the cavity, and an outcoupling grating in the center of the device, which couples light out of the cavity. One DBR is long and shallow, with a narrow-band reflective spectrum. The other DBR is short and deep, with a wide-band reflective spectrum. The lasing wavelength is determined by the reflective spectrum overlap of the two DBRs. Since the shallow DBR is highly reflective to only one Fabry Perot wavelength, and the deep DBR is highly reflective to a wide band of Fabry-Perot wavelengths, it is the reflective spectrum of the shallow DBR that determines the lasing wavelength.

  • Publication number: 20040024682
Abstract: A notification method and system is disclosed which can be implemented in the context of an online marketplace, to the advantage of both the users of the online marketplace and the operator of the online marketplace. This invention enables users to submit requests for receiving priority notifications when an item matching a query becomes available, in exchange for a notification fee payable only if the item is purchased within a predetermined time period after the notification is sent. In a preferred embodiment, the notification fee is variable and determined by the user, in effect creating a novel auction marketplace where users bid for the timely dispatching of notifications.

  • Patent number: 6687734
Abstract: A method of determining if one web site has the same information as another web site includes receiving a signal to select a form configured to find data in a file containing information displayed on a web site and accessed via a network, applying the selected form to the file and selectively identifying item information available in the file, copying identified item information to a first data file, the identified item information being related to a specific product or service, and comparing the first data file and a second data file to determine if the specific product or service of the first data file is related to the specific product or service of the second data file.

  • Publication number: 20030123175
Abstract: A system and method for recovering from write errors during writing of a moving storage medium suspend write current while allowing the storage medium to continue moving. The system and method continue to format data for writing while the write current is suspended and resequence the data for subsequent storage. Information is recorded to distinguish previously written data from current data with error correction pointers adjusted accordingly. Write errors may be detected in a track following streaming tape system based on data errors from a read back check or based on positioning errors of a read/write head servo system, for example. By allowing the storage medium to continue moving through the error event, the system and method improve speed, capacity utilization, and throughput of the storage and retrieval process.

  • Patent number: 6166870
Abstract: A method for writing a servo pattern onto a length of magnetic tape includes writing a first frequency signal onto a first portion along the length of the tape, and writing a second frequency signal by simultaneously writing a plurality of spaced apart predetermined shapes. The predetermined spaced apart shapes are achieved by writing the second frequency using a writer having a split top pole. Passing the tape over the spaced apart top pole elements allows the writer to simultaneously write the plurality of spaced apart shapes. The tape can then be passed over a read module.
