  • Patent number: 6229372
Abstract: An active clamp circuit for digital circuits includes a first MOSFET serially connected between an upper power supply voltage and an input terminal to be clamped, and a second MOSFET serially connected between a lower voltage power supply and the input terminal. The voltages at the gates of the first and second MOSFETs are held at constant first and second reference voltages by a reference circuit and the first reference voltage at the gate of the first MOSFET is less than the second reference voltage at the gate of the second MOSFET. The first and second reference voltages can be changed by connecting the reference circuit to power supply voltages other than the power supply voltages to which the first and second MOSFETs are connected. The reference voltages can also be varied by adding stages of transistors which act as resistors in parallel to the reference circuit. When the first reference voltage is to be varied, it is recommended that the transistors of opposite type be biased independently.

  • Patent number: 6222850
Abstract: A LAN of the ethernet type employs CSMA/CD protocol for channel access by a plurality of network nodes. Each node includes a data processing system having a device driver and an adapter and transmits data packets to the LAN in accordance with the IEEE 802.3 standard. The adapter coupled is at one side to the network in either a half or full-duplex mode. The other side of the adapter is bound to the device driver which is dynamically tuned for reduced latency and increased network throughput, regardless of the transmitting mode of the node and the capture effect of the ethernet. Each device driver operates in a transmit chaining mode when the network is in a lightly loaded half-duplex, or full-duplex mode. The driver includes means for monitoring data packet collisions on a channel of the network. A “collision rate” or the percentage of data packets which were transmitted on the channel with collisions in a pre-selected time interval is calculated by the device driver.

  • Patent number: 6181697
Abstract: A endpoint client (111-1) on an IP Unicast network (107) that is provided access to a Multicast session on an IP Multicast network (101) through a Multicast-Unicast gateway server (MUS) (120) is enabled to re-Multicast that session to other endpoint clients (111-2) on the network to which it is connected or to endpoint clients (134, 135) on any Multicast-capable sub-network (132) to which it is directly connected. To act as a re-Multicaster, the endpoint client receiving Unicast-addressed packets from the session from the MUS, re-translates these Unicast-addressed packets to Multicast-addressed packets by translating the Unicast address in the distribution field of each packet's header into a Multicast address and overwriting the Unicast address in each header with the Multicast address. When an endpoint client on the same or connected sub-network as the re-Multicaster desires to join a session that is being re-Multicast, it needs only connect to that Multicast address.

  • Patent number: 6167032
Abstract: A system and method to avoid transmit underruns from a host system to a communication network using an adjustable threshold on a frame basis. The host system includes a device driver, host descriptors and host buffer. The host descriptor define the number of blocks of data to be transferred from the host to the network via a Media Access Control (MAC) device. The MAC device includes a processor, a transmit storage device, and a medium independent interface coupled to the network. The MAC device is connected to the host system via a data bus. A host descriptor is generated for each frame of data transferred by the MAC device from the host to the network. The descriptor is generated by the device driver and provides the MAC processor with a block size of data to be transferred and a threshold in each frame indicating the number of blocks of data to be transferred from the host system to the MAC device to avoid an underrun before transmission to the communication network.

  • Patent number: 6144086
Abstract: A method and structure for improving the latch-up characteristic of semiconductor devices is provided. A dual depth STI is used to isolate the wells from each other. The trench has a first substantially horizontal surface at a first depth and a second substantially horizontal surface at a second depth which is deeper than the first depth. The n- and p-wells are formed on either side of the trench. A highly doped region is formed in the substrate underneath the second substantially horizontal surface of the trench. The highly doped region abuts both the first and the second wells and extends the isolation of the trench.

  • Patent number: 6137804
Abstract: In a local area network, a system and a method to detect transmit underruns and retransmit frames between a sending station and a receiving station using a Media Access Control (MAC) device in lieu of a sending processor. The MAC device includes a MAC processor for transmitting data in blocks from a host buffer to a storage device, e.g., RAM for retransmission to the network via a Media Independent Interface (MII) unit. The MAC device includes a transmit logic unit which uses a control word set by the MAC processor to transmit data by frames from the storage device to the network. The transmit logic unit includes pointer control logic to identify the start address of the data and to track the data as read from the storage device to the network. When a transmit underrun occurs, the transmit logic recognizes the condition and resets the pointer logic to the start of the first frame for retransmission to the receiving station.

  • Patent number: 6081409
Abstract: A magneto-resistive read head having a "parasitic shield" provides an alternative path for currents associated with sparkovers, thus preventing such currents from damaging the read head. The parasitic shield is provided in close proximity to a conventional magnetic shield. The electrical potential of parasitic shield is held essentially equal to the electrical potential of the sensor element. If charges accumulate on the conventional shield, current will flow to the parasitic shield at a lower potential than would be required for current to flow between the conventional shield and the sensor element. Alternatively, conductive spark gap devices are electrically coupled to sensor element leads and to each magnetic shield. Each spark gap device is brought within very close proximity of the substrate to provide an alternative path for charge that builds up between the sensor element and the substrate to be discharged.
