  • Patent number: 6988960
Abstract: A golf club head with low peripheral and rearward weighting includes C-shaped and annular weights connected with at least one of the rear and bottom surfaces, respectively, of the head. The weighting within the peripheral weights is adjustable between the heel, rear, and toe portions of the head to customize the weight distribution of the head in accordance with a golfer's swing. The added weight and its orientation increases the moment of inertia of the head and reduces the rotation thereof.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 28, 2005
Date of Patent: January 24, 2006
    Assignee: Callaway Golf Company
Inventors: Steven J. Mahaffey, Thomas M. Greene, David Lowe
  • Patent number: 6986715
Abstract: A golf club head (20) having a body (22) with a front wall (30) with an opening (32) and a striking plate insert (40) is disclosed herein. The striking plate insert (40) preferably includes an outer layer (61) and an inner layer (65) that are joined together by an explosion bonding process. The inner layer (65) is preferably composed of a material that has a lower yield strength than that of the outer layer (61). The explosion bonding process results in the striking plate insert having an increased yield strength relative to the yield strengths of the individual layers. The golf club head (20) preferably has a moment of inertia, Izz, about the Z axis through the center of gravity of the golf club head ranging from 2700 g-cm2 to 4000 g-cm2.

  • Patent number: 6935967
Abstract: A set of golf club irons of the blade type is characterized by a weight pad behind the impact area of the club face which progressively increases in height through the set from the long irons to the short irons. In addition, the thickness of the sole portion of each head increases through the set to progressively increase the weight at the bottom of the club heads. The clubs provide improved feel to the golfer which enable the golfer to work the ball more easily during execution of a golf shot.

Date of Patent: August 30, 2005

  • Publication number: 20040157677
Abstract: A set of golf clubs is characterized by club heads having striking face inserts at least one of which varies in thickness, density, and/or material from the other inserts so that the heads have different centers of gravity. Preferably the long irons in the set have a lower center of gravity (because of thinner or less dense inserts) to increase the trajectory of a struck golf ball. The short irons have a higher center of gravity to reduce the trajectory of a struck golf ball.

  • Publication number: 20030157995
Abstract: Laminated striking face inserts for golf clubs are characterized by explosion bonding of the layers of the laminate. The outer layers are of a substantially high strength and density material and the center layer is of relatively lower strength and density material. Explosion bonding results in a laminated face plate or insert in which the yield strength of the laminate is similar to the full strength characteristics of the materials used in the laminate.
