  • Publication number: 20030153397
Abstract: A set of golf clubs is characterized by club heads having striking face inserts at least one of which varies in thickness, density, and/or material from the other inserts so that the heads have different centers of gravity. Preferably the long irons in the set have a lower center of gravity (because of thinner or less dense inserts) to increase the trajectory of a struck golf ball. The short irons have a higher center of gravity to reduce the trajectory of a struck golf ball.

  • Publication number: 20030119602
Abstract: An iron type golf club head includes a forged body having a striking face area containing a recess and a high strength insert secured within the recess with an outer surface of the recess being flush with a non-recessed portion of the striking face area. The bottom of the body portion extends rearwardly and upwardly to define an undercut area in the bottom portion behind the insert. Owing to the recess and the undercut area, the weight of the body is distributed around the perimeter and toward the bottom to increase the moment of inertia and decrease rotation of the club head.

  • Patent number: 6074309
Abstract: Golf club heads, both woods and irons, have recessed areas in the striking faces of the club heads with an insert secured therein. The insert is of a laminated structure having multiple layers and so constructed that the outer layers are of a substantially high strength to weight material and the center layers are of a relatively lower weight material. This structure allows the insert to be reduced in weight so as to allow the weight difference to be repositioned about the perimeter of the club head to achieve optimum weight distribution. One of the outer layers is preferably perforated to permit visual inspection of the center layer.

  • Patent number: 5549297
Abstract: A golf club iron comprising a shaft, a head having a sole, a toe end, and a heel end. The head comprises a striking face and a cavity in the back portion. A vibration dampening ramp bar extends from the lower edge of the cavity and terminates at its lower end short of the upper edge of the cavity with the ramp bar being offset from the center of gravity of the club head. In a set of irons, the distance between the center of the lower end of the ramp and the toe of the iron increases as the loft of the club head increases.

  • Patent number: 5518242
Abstract: A golf club head comprising a striking face section, a sole, and a flange extending about the periphery of the sole. The flange decreases in height from the upper edge of the striking face section to the back edge of the sole. A composition insert is secured within the front of the striking face section. This structure provides a crownless club head. In one modification, the insert has only edge support by the body of the club head. In another modification, the club head is made of a solid material having a high strength/density ratio with no face insert.

  • Patent number: 5419559
Abstract: A golf club head which comprises a metallic hollow body having a sole, a crown, a heel, a toe, a rear wall, and a striking face. A single web is secured to and subtends downwardly from the inner surface of the crown, with the web extending perpendicularly from the inner surface of the striking face and terminating short of the inner surface of the rear wall, the depth of the web being greatest at the inner surface of the striking face. The web is located along the transverse centerline of the club head. This web configuration substantially eliminates crown vibrations in oversized metal woods.

  • Patent number: 4762322
Abstract: Disclosed is a unified set of golf clubs, from wood clubs through wedge clubs, in which loft and lie angles, face progression, and club lengths are coordinated and correlated. The center of gravity of each club is lower, further back and more centered on the club face than is usual. In addition, each golf club of the set features a sole width of at least 1.25 inches. The center of gravity of each club head is located no more than 0.7 inch above the sole and at least 0.5 inch from the centerline of the club shaft. The club heads of this invention may be fabricated as a hollow metal shell. Alternatively, the club heads may be formed of a low density, high strength material such as reaction injection molded polyurethane. In such an embodiment weighted inserts are molded into and encapsulated within the polyurethane.
