Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide systems and methods for capturing on-demand media content for use with portable media devices, including wireless phones, using a based station to provide for enhanced signal strength capture. These embodiments provide for the reception/distribution of on-demand media content, which can include, among other things, video content (such as television programming, movies, etc.), audio content (such as radio programming, audio recordings, etc.), data content (such as Internet data—web pages, electronic mail, etc.), voice transmissions (such as telephone transmissions, etc.) and/or the like.

Abstract: According to the invention, a telephonic communication system for integrating wireless phone service with home phone service is disclosed. The telephone communication system includes a first communication and second communication channels and a telephone switch. The first communication channel is coupled to a wireless phone and the second communication channel is coupled to an interface that is coupled to one or more wired phones at a user location. The first and second communication channels are accessible with a single telephone number. The telephone switch is coupled to the first and second communication channels and determines if the first and second communication channels should be simultaneously sent an incoming phone call directed to the telephone number.

Abstract: Certain embodiments are directed at methods and systems for transmitting utility usage data using a public switched telephone network (“PSTN”). The methods and systems may include collecting utility usage data pertaining to a customer premises with a utility meter at the customer premises. The utility usage data may be transmitted automatically from the utility meter to an access point of a public broadband network. The utility usage data may be received at the access point. A digital subscriber line (“DSL”) modem in communication with the access point may modulate the utility usage data at the access point. The utility usage data may be transmitted securely through the public switched telephone network to an Internet point of presence. The utility usage data may be received at the Internet point of presence. The utility usage data may be transmitted from the Internet point of presence to a utility provider via the Internet.

Abstract: Information is maintained on a mobile client device. A delete command is received at the mobile client device over a wireless mobile network from a mobile-device data management server configured to provide mobile-device service to multiple mobile client devices over the wireless mobile network. The information is deleted from the mobile client device automatically and without user interaction in accordance with the delete command.

Abstract: Tools are provided for distributing access-restricted content in an internet protocol television (“IPTV”) environment based on portable entitlement keys. Such tools can include a decoder, an encoder, and a network entitlement handler. The decoder may be configured to receive a key associated with entitlement information, and transmit the entitlement information over a network. The encoder may be configured to receive content from content providers, and to encode the content to create IP-compatible content, with access restrictions based on entitlement. The network entitlement handler may be configured to receive a request for requested content from the decoder; receive the access-restricted content including (including the requested content) from the encoder; and transmit the requested content over the network to the decoder using IP, when the decoder is entitled to receive the requested content.

The network interface device might, in some instances, include a broadband modem, such as a digital subscriber line modem, which can be used to transmit the utility usage data to the utility provider.

Abstract: The present invention provides systems and methods for providing mobile users with requested resources. In one such method, first and second location indicators are received for a mobile user, with each of the location indicators having a time associated therewith. The method includes calculating a mobile vector of the mobile user and associating the mobile vector with a first network region. The method further includes identifying a second mobile user in the first network region having at least a portion of the requested resource, and sending a sub-resource request to the second mobile user. The sub-resource request causes the second mobile user to send at least a portion of the requested resource to the mobile user.

Abstract: Systems and methods related to the provision of location based services via a mobile communications device are described. A communication system is described, which may include a mobile communications device, a mobile communications base station, and a server computer system. The location of the device may be correlated with certain user preferences stored on the server computer system. In some cases, various location related mapping functions for a device are discussed. Systems and methods which provide for activities to be undertaken based on the location of a device are also described. The disclosure also addresses systems and methods of efficiently determining the location of a mobile device. Different notification schemes based on the location of a device and specified preferences are described. In addition, the disclosure addresses systems and methods for keyword monitoring based on the location of a device.

Abstract: Tools are provided for supporting messaging about a video program using a set top box. Video information related to the video program is received and converted at the set top box and a display device is caused to display the video program. A message to be sent from a first user to a second user is created in accordance with input from the first user. The message is related to the video program. A set of at least one Internet Protocol (“IP”) packets comprising the message is generated. The set of at least one IP packets is transmitted from the set top box through an IP network to be received by an external device that is separate from the set top box.

Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for providing telecommunication services. In one embodiment, the system comprises an antenna at a customer premises, to transmit outbound voice communications in a wireless protocol and to receive inbound voice communications in the wireless protocol. A demarcation device is coupled with the antenna converts inbound voice communications from the wireless protocol to a wired format and converts outbound voice communications from the wired format to the wireless protocol. An interface to the customer premises is coupled with the demarcation device. The interface transmits inbound voice communications in the wired format to the customer premises via a first internal transport medium and transmits outbound voice communications received in the wired format on the first internal transport medium to the demarcation device.

Abstract: A method for providing the communication of information services between customer premises equipment (CPE) at a customer's premises and a source of the information services includes providing a demarcation device at the customer's premises. The demarcation device defines an interface between an external transport medium that is substantially external to the customer's premises and an internal transport medium that is substantially internal to the customer's premises. The method also includes establishing a virtual private network (VPN) between the demarcation device and the source of information services and establishing a virtual local area network (VLAN) between the demarcation device and the CPE.

Abstract: Tools are provided for supporting dynamic insertion of advertisements into a content stream delivered to a viewer through an Internet Protocol (“IP”) network. A viewer profile that includes at least one item of interest and an advertisement profile that includes a mapping from one or more items to at least one advertisement are maintained. An item in the viewer profile is matched to one or more advertisements based on the advertisement profile. The content stream is retrieved and an advertisement slot into which an advertisement should be inserted is identified. The advertisement to be inserted is selected from the one or more advertisements and the content of the advertisement is inserted into the advertisement slot in the content stream. A video component of the content stream with the content of the advertisement inserted is displayed on a display device.

Abstract: Tools are provided for supporting content syndication to a set top box. The set top box requests a syndicated feed at regularly scheduled times, and receives the syndicated feed through an Internet Protocol (“IP”) network. Hence, a syndicated feed is distributed to the set top box that subscribes to the syndicated feed. Additionally, the set top box converts the syndicated feed for use by the set top box, and causes at least one image based at least in part on the syndicated feed to be displayed on a display device for a user.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide network interface devices, as well as system and methods for using them. For example, in accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a system is provided for allowing a plurality of telecommunication information providers to transmit telecommunication information to a customer premises. The system can include a network interface device operable to receive a plurality of sets of telecommunication information. The addressable application device is adapted to interface with a transport medium internal to a customer premises. The processor is adapted to selectively process telecommunication information originating from a transport medium external to the customer premises. The processor is further adapted to transmit the processed telecommunication information to the addressable application device for implementation of an application over the transport medium internal to the customer premises in accordance with a state of the addressable application device. The addressable application device and the processor are disposed external to the customer premises.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide systems and methods for distributing urgent public information. For example, one exemplary of the invention provides a method for providing an alert to a subscriber. The exemplary method comprises receiving an alert message from at least one alert source. The alert message often will be pertinent to at least one of the subscribers. The alert message can comprise an alert and associated alert information. The alert information can provide information about the alert such that the information can be analyzed determine whether a particular subscriber likely should receive the alert. Other embodiments provide systems, which can be used to perform the methods of the invention.

Abstract: Various embodiments of the invention provide methods and systems for managing the reception and/or recording of media content on a base station. In certain embodiments, the base station is configured to transfer media content received by the base station to a portable media device. In one aspect, the portable media device may be a wireless phone with media playback capabilities. One set of embodiments provides a reception manager for managing the reception of media content by the base station. Merely by way of example, embodiments of the present invention may provide for monitoring of the signal strength of broadcast media content, and certain embodiments may provide for receiving and displaying information concerning media content available to the base station. Other embodiments of the present invention may provide for the management of recording and/or storing of media content.

Abstract: The present invention provides systems and methods for distributing content objects to a requester. Some of the systems include at least one content object origination, and two or more content object destinations. The two or more content object destinations are associated with customer premises. Communication links communicably couple the content object origination and at least one of the content object destinations, and at least two of the content object destinations. Local storage is associated with at least one of the content object destinations. A content object from the content object origination is maintained on a local storage associated with one of the content object destinations, and the content object is accessible via the local storage to another content object destination. The methods provide various ways for distributing content objects using systems similar to that previously described.
