  • Publication number: 20040204229
Abstract: A method and gaming device, such as a slot machine, is disclosed that generates a spin results which are used to determine a player's progress toward a secondary or overall game objective. The secondary game objective may include completing a set or a collection. A game objective may instruct a player to attempt to assemble a picture or image. Portions of the complete image may be displayed on a first game area, such as the reel area of the gaming device. A player executing a spin on the gaming device may acquire or utilize portions of the image as they occur in the context of a reel-based game. Image portions may “occur” when they appear on the gaming device payline as part of a traditional reel-based game. The image portion may be utilized on a second game area of the gaming device (e.g. a screen located above the gaming device reel area) in order to depict progress toward the secondary game objective of completing the image.

  • Publication number: 20030013516
Abstract: A system and method for providing consolation prizes base upon player gaming losses is described. Gaming device players are awarded consolation prizes based upon the amount of money they lose in a gambling session. The prizes a player may be offered may be determined by calculating the total amount a player put into a gaming device (the “coin-in” amount) less the total amount he receives from the device (the “coin-out” amount) during a gambling session. In some embodiments, third-party merchants provide prizes that both represent value to players and allow the merchants to establish a relationship with new customers. For example, a consolation prize may include a free three-month trial subscription to a magazine or to a cable television service. In some embodiments, the consolation prizes may be rewarded on a tiered basis in proportion to the amount of loss the player has sustained.

  • Publication number: 20020161645
Abstract: The invention includes a system and method for presenting forward commitment agreements to consumers proximate to a benefit dispensing device such as a vending machine or an automatic teller machine. A controller is in communication with one or more benefit dispensing devices and one or more merchant devices. Merchants devise forward commitment agreements to be offered to consumers. Such agreements specify a benefit that will be provided to a consumer immediately if the consumer agrees to fulfill a commitment in the future. Using a merchant device, a merchant communicates descriptions of the forward commitment agreements to the controller. When a consumer subsequently accesses a benefit dispensing device, the controller, via the benefit dispensing device, offers a forward commitment agreement to the consumer. If the consumer chooses to enter into the forward commitment agreement, then the benefit dispensing device provides the consumer with an immediate benefit.

  • Publication number: 20020147040
Abstract: The present invention is directed generally to a method and apparatus for operating a gaming device having a flat rate play session costing a flat rate price. The flat rate play session spans multiple plays on the gaming device over a pre-established duration. The gaming device identifies price parameters and determines the flat rate price of playing the gaming device based on those price parameters. In one embodiment, identifying price parameters includes receiving player selected price parameters. In another embodiment, price parameters further incorporate operator selected price parameters. Should the player decide to pay the flat rate price, the player simply deposits the necessary funds into the gaming device or makes a credit account available for the gaming device to debit. Once the player initiates play, the gaming device tracks the duration remaining in the flat rate play session and stops the play when the given period has elapsed.
