Abstract: Backing up a data file can be accomplished by processing, in-line and at a first client, a plurality of datablocks taken from the data file. The processing of each datablock includes creating a unique signature of the datablock and determining whether the signature is contained in a database of signatures. Each signature in the database is associated with previously backed up datablocks. The database of signatures includes signatures of previous backed up datablocks that were backed up from at least one other client. Data are transmitted to a remote backup server for backing up the datablock. The transmitted data characterize a link to one of the previously stored datablocks when the signature of the processed datablock is found in the database of signatures. Abstract: A system and method for detecting vascular contamination by surgical anesthetic using non-invasive IR spectrophotometry. One embodiment is a method for operating an instrument such as an enhanced pulse oximeter to monitor a patient receiving local anesthetic marked with dye that absorbs infrared light. Light is applied to and detected from tissue of the patient. A signal representative of the detected light is processed to derive patient oxygenation information. The detected light is also processed to derive information representative of the presence of the dye-marked anesthetic. The oxygenation information and the information representative of the presence of anesthetic are displayed. The oxygenation monitoring and display and the anesthetic monitoring and display can occur separately or concurrently. Fluorescing dyes and fluorescence detection approaches are used for anesthetic detection in some embodiments.

Abstract: A removable training aid for a human powered vehicle of the kind in which a pair of opposed cranks are provided which rotate relative to a common axis, the aid providing an audible or tactile indication in use that a rider is rotating the pedals by applying an incorrect pedalling technique, the removable training aid comprising an intermediary body, attachment means for attaching the body to at least one of the cranks and a pedal secured to the intermediary body, the removable training aid being arranged so that in use the pedal is free to rotate around an axis of rotation that is parallel to the common axis, the intermediary part permitting movement of the axis of rotation of the pedal relative to the crank through at least one degree of freedom in the event that a force is applied to the pedal along a path that is not perpendicular to an imaginary line that connects the axis of rotation of the crank with the threaded bore in the crank.

Abstract: Embodiments are directed towards a method and a computer server for receiving assertions, wherein an assertion can have a functional property such that for a given subject and a given property the object has a single value at any time, maintaining a knowledge base that includes (1) a history table that stores previously received assertions, and (2) a snapshot table that stores currently valid assertions, maintaining a snapshot cache in memory that stores a subset of the assertions in the snapshot table, initiating a processing cycle, selecting an assertion for processing, generating an assertion tuple that corresponds to the selected assertion, determining that the property of the selected assertion is functional, writing a retraction tuple to the history table, writing the assertion tuple to the snapshot table; and writing the assertion tuple to the history table.

Abstract: Various methods are described for evaluating fuel pump data and determining a fuel pump flow rate. One example method may comprise receiving fuel pump information associated with a fuel pump. The method may further comprise updating previous fuel pump information associated with the fuel pump based on the received fuel pump information. Additionally, the method may comprise detecting an alarm condition associated with the fuel pump based at least in part on the updated fuel pump information. Similar and related methods, apparatuses, and computer program products are also provided.

Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed for sending information in an observation platform. A determination is made, at an observation platform, that a first communication device associated with a first user is located in an environment. A determination is made, at the observation platform, that the first communication device is located in proximity to a second communication device associated with a second user. Speech information is sent to the first communication device for the first user to use in communicating with the second user.

Abstract: A transmission x-ray tube comprising an end window hermetically sealed to a flexible coupling. The flexible coupling can allow the window to shift or tilt in one direction or another direction to allow an electron beam to impinge upon one region of the window or another region of the window. A method of utilizing different regions of an x-ray tube target by tilting an x-ray tube window at an acute angle with respect to an electron beam axis to cause an electron beam to impinge on a selected region of the window and tilting the window in a different direction to allow the electron beam to impinge on a different selected region of the window.

Abstract: An online Gift Registry Service provides registration of information for a gift registrant and allows access to the registry by potential gift giver users. In addition, users can tag items of interest at participating Service Provider (SP) sites and the SP sites will register these items with the Gift Registry Service on the user's behalf. It further provides a streamlined checkout process for purchasing these gift items with the registered SP sites (e.g. World Wide Web sites) over a distributed public network. Users and Service Providers (SP) initially register with the Gift Registry Service and are provided additional functionality. For users, a reminder service is provided to notify individuals automatically upon the trigger of certain events, such as important dates or product sales from online merchants. In addition, there are various occasion planning services available such as distribution lists, discussion groups, and other related resources for multiple events including weddings, baby showers, etc.

Abstract: A method and system for processing a data load. A request is received for a data load to load data into a database in accordance with a data template that includes data to be loaded into the database. The template includes columns and rows. The request specifies a request type characterized by at least one column that collectively includes unique data for each row. The columns include N sets of columns (N?1) in addition to the at least one column. The data load is split into multiple loads of data. The multiple loads include one load and N additional loads. The one load is associated with the at least one column. The N additional loads are respectively associated with the N sets of columns and are configured to generate or modify one or more rows in each table of N respective additional tables in the database.

Abstract: A compression ignition engine is fueled from common rail fuel injectors that predominately inject natural gas fuel that is compression ignited with a small pilot injection of liquid diesel fuel. Before and after a rapid load loss transient, the liquid and gaseous rail pressures are controlled toward respective pressures based upon engine speed and load. During the transient, the liquid rail pressure is controlled relative to the gas rail pressure in order to maintain the liquid rail pressure greater than the gas pressure during the transient to avoid migration gaseous fuel into the liquid fuel side of the system.

Abstract: A method and system for multiplexing audio signals into a single channel uses frequency division multiplexing. The frequency division multiplexing method herein is based on a frequency transform algorithm using FFT shifting that does not require a carrier signal for the modulation. In one embodiment, two input microphone audio signals are frequency shifted and the resulting single audio channel is directed over a standard input connection to a computing device, for instance, a smart phone using a wired TRRS connection. The TRRS analog input of the computing devices exhibits a high-pass characteristic, and the frequency shifting method enables the low frequency audio components of input audio signals to be received and processed by a software application on the smart phone. Abstract: Embodiments of the invention relate to payment cards and methods for making payment cards. In one embodiment, a card comprises a first layer and a second layer adjacent to the first layer. The second layer comprises a plurality of particles comprising metal, and the plurality of particles comprise at least about 15 volume % of the second layer. In another embodiment, a mixture is prepared comprising polymer and a plurality of particles comprising metal. The plurality of particles comprise at least about 15 volume % of the mixture. The mixture is pressed and an outer layer is applied. The mixture and outer layer are then cut to form the card.

Abstract: The invention provides methods and materials for making and using variant serum albumin amino acid sequences which exhibit improved properties compared to wild type serum albumin sequences. The invention further provides methods and materials for making and using fusion proteins in which the variant serum albumin amino acid sequences are fused to a therapeutic or diagnostic agent, such as a therapeutic protein, or a functional fragment or variant thereof that maintains activity, and exhibits improved properties.

Abstract: A method for providing information to a plurality of vendors located remotely from a broadcast network. A plurality of user-defined parameters are received by a user input database with at least one of the user-defined parameters including a user profile. Each of the user profiles includes a user identifier code identifying a communicator device associated with a particular user. Real-time data indicative of the spatial locations of the communicator devices is received by a communicator location database. Search information is received independently from a plurality of vendors and a data set is generated for each vendor.

Abstract: The subject matter described herein relates to transmitting and displaying a channel of a television to a non-subscriber when a subscriber is viewing the channel so that both the non-subscriber and the subscriber can simultaneously view the channel. A channel is displayed to a subscriber of a service offering the channel. A presence status of the subscriber is monitored. The presence status characterizes a subscriber presence for viewing the channel. The presence status is displayed to one or more contacts of the subscriber, including the non-subscriber. The channel can be simultaneously displayed to the subscriber and the contacts of the subscriber for as long as the subscriber views the channel until a predetermined period of time. Related methods, apparatuses, systems, techniques and articles are also described.

Abstract: A lost motion engine valve actuation system and method of actuating an engine valve are disclosed. The system may comprise a valve train element, a pivoting lever, a control piston, and a hydraulic circuit. The pivoting lever may include a first end for contacting the control piston, a second end for transmitting motion to a valve stem and a means for contacting a valve train element. The amount of lost motion provided by the system may be selected by varying the position of the control piston relative to the pivoting lever. Variation of the control piston position may be carried out by placing the control piston in hydraulic communication with a control trigger valve and one or more accumulators. Actuation of the trigger valve releases hydraulic fluid allowing for adjustment of the control piston position. Means for limiting valve seating velocity, filling the hydraulic circuit upon engine start up, and mechanically locking the control piston/lever for a fixed level of valve actuation are also disclosed.

Abstract: A filter element, and filter apparatus, include a filter pack, a seal member, and a seal support frame operatively connecting the seal member to the filter pack. The seal support frame includes an annular extension, which is preferably canted at an oblique angle to a longitudinal axis, for supporting the seal member. The seal support frame also preferably includes a first end thereof including the annular extension, and a second end thereof spaced from the first end thereof along the longitudinal axis, with the first and second ends of the seal support frame joined by a hub of the outer peripheral sidewall of the seal support frame to define a cavity within the seal support frame for receiving the filter pack. The first and second ends of the seal support frame, and the filter pack are preferably joined and sealed to one another by a single bead of adhesive.

Abstract: Light redirecting film is disclosed. The light redirecting film includes a first major surface that includes a plurality of first microstructures that extend along a first direction. The light redirecting film also includes a second major surface that is opposite to the first major surface and includes a plurality of second microstructures. The second major surface has an optical haze that is not greater than about 3% and an optical clarity that is not greater than about 85%. The light redirecting film has an average effective transmission that is not less than about 1.75.

Abstract: A method of backing up large volumes of data that includes identifying a data file for remote backup; transmitting two or more chunks of the data file in parallel through a communications network to a server to be stored by the server; streaming, compressing, and encrypting prior to transmission each chunk without generating additional data copies for each of the streaming, compressing, and encrypting; detecting an interruption in the transmission a chunk(s); checking the availability and reliability of the communications network; and restarting transmission of the interrupted chunk after a randomized pause period.
