  • Patent number: 5976701
Abstract: A flexible, aminoplast-curable film-forming composition can serve as a transparent coating composition for a multi-component composite coating composition having the transparent coating on a pigmented or colored base coat. The film-forming composition comprises at least two polymeric components. One is a polyether polymer containing a plurality of terminal and/or pendant carbamate groups of the structure: ##STR1## Another is at least one additional carbamate functional polymer along with urethane oligomer or is a polyurethane polyol. The former include carbamate functional polyester, acrylic polymer, and polyurethane, where each contains a plurality of terminal and/or pendant carbamate groups of the Structure I depicted above. Also the urethane oligomers has a plurality of carbamate groups of Structure I that are pendant and/or terminal.

  • Patent number: 5922475
Abstract: A curable film-forming composition is provided comprising: (i) a polyester polymer or oligomer containing a plurality of carbamate groups of the structure: ##STR1## (ii) an alkylolated and optionally etherified carbamate functional acrylic polymer; and (iii) an aminoplast crosslinking agent.A multi-component composite coating composition is also provided. The coating composition comprises a pigmented film-forming composition serving as a base coat and a clear film-forming composition serving as a transparent coat over the base coat. The transparent coat, or clear coat, is derived from the curable film-forming composition described above.

  • Patent number: 5859174
Abstract: Ethylenically unsaturated compounds are provided having Structure I and from which polymers with a plurality of groups of Structure II are derived. ##STR1## In Structures I and II, R.sub.1 is hydrogen or methyl, and R.sub.3 is hydrogen or lower alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and when R.sub.3 is hydrogen and R.sub.2 has two carbon atoms R.sub.2 is methyl methylene. In Structure I, R.sub.2 and in Structure II R'.sub.2 is a divalent linking group having 2 to 20 carbon atoms. When R.sub.3 is hydrogen and R'.sub.2 has two carbon atoms, R'.sub.2 is methyl methylene. The compounds of Structure I may be used as monomers and reacted with other ethylenically unsaturated monomers via addition polymerization to arrive at the polymer with groups of Structure II.

  • Patent number: 5798145
Abstract: A flexible, aminoplast-curable film-forming composition and a process for preparing multi-layered coated articles coated with a pigmented or colored base coat and a transparent or clear topcoat are disclosed. A pigmented or colored base coat is first applied to a substrate followed by the application of a transparent topcoat to the base coat. The transparent topcoat composition is a flexible, curable film-forming composition comprising (i) a polyether polymer containing a plurality of terminal or pendant carbamate groups of the structure: ##STR1## (ii) a polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyester polymer, a polyurethane polymer, an acrylic polymer, and mixtures thereof wherein each polymer contains a plurality of terminal or pendant carbamate groups of the structure depicted above; and (iii) an aminoplast crosslinking agent. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the film-forming composition contains a polyester polymer derived from a cycloaliphatic acid or anhydride.

  • Patent number: 5780559
Abstract: A film-forming composition is provided comprising: (i) an amide functional polymer, copolymer or oligomer selected from (a) acrylic polymers, (b) polyesters, (c) polyurethanes, (d) polyethers or (e) mixtures thereof; and (ii) an aminoplast crosslinking agent containing methylol and/or methylol ether groups. The acrylic polymers have a plurality of groups of at least one of the structures: ##STR1## wherein n is 0 or 1, R.sub.1 is hydrogen or methyl, R.sub.2 is a divalent linking group having about 1 to 30 carbon atoms when the group is of the first structure, or R.sub.2 is alkylene having about 2 to 13 carbon atoms when the group is of structure II, and R.sub.3 is hydrogen or lower alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The (b), (c), and (d) polymers each have a plurality of terminal amide groups.
