  • Publication number: 20110187599
Abstract: In providing a wireless location communication service including a location based service to a user of a mobile device, the mobile device sends information concerning a location of the device relative to a given position in a wireless communication system. The given position may be that of a base station in the system. First information concerning a location of the base station (e.g, GPS information) is communicated to the mobile device, e.g., via broadcast. The mobile device determines second information concerning its location, e.g., based on signals from GPS satellites received thereby. The mobile device then generates relative location information based at least on the first and second information.

  • Patent number: 7852963
Abstract: A method and system for predicting a signal power to interference metric for a communication channel in a coverage area of a phase sweep diversity communication system are provided. In the method, a signal power to interference metric for the communication channel is predicted based on a sweep frequency for transmissions in the coverage area. The signal power to interference metric predicted may be a carrier-to-interference ratio or a signal-to-noise plus interference ratio.

  • Patent number: 7583637
Abstract: In an aspect of the method, a received data packet is decoded in order to determine a packet error rate value, and an average package error value for N received data packets is updated based on the determined packet error rate value. The updated average packet error rate value is then compared against a threshold value and a data rate request is issued based on this comparison. In another aspect, a response to a transmitted data packet is received, the response being related to an average packet error rate value. The average packet error rate value is compared against a threshold and a data rate is modified based on the comparison. In each of the above aspects, a data rate control margin that is used to overcome channel estimate errors resulting from transmission delays may be dynamically adjusted, e.g., in real time, in order to optimize system resources.

  • Publication number: 20080076436
Abstract: A method of call setup in a wireless communication system in which cross carrier Y traffic channels at a serving base station and one or more neighbor base stations are assigned to a mobile station during system access to improve call setup when the mobile station is in a cross carrier Y cell or coverage area of one of the neighbor base stations. The serving base station is selected by the mobile station based on the signal quality of an access carrier X. Traffic channels are assigned to the mobile station on the cross carrier Y at the serving base station and one or more neighbor base stations. If the cross carrier Y cell of the serving base station covers less geographical area than a corresponding access carrier X cell, then the mobile station may be in the cross carrier Y cell of one of the neighbor base stations.

  • Publication number: 20080070576
Abstract: A method of handoff utilizing a combined signal quality measurement to trigger or initiate a handoff of a mobile station to a plurality of neighbor base stations, wherein the combined signal quality measurement corresponds to a summation of signal quality measurements associated with the plurality of neighbor base stations. The handoff is triggered when the combined signal quality measurement is greater than a handoff threshold. By using the combined signal quality measurement instead of a signal quality measurement of an individual neighbor base station, handoffs can be triggered earlier along a boundary shared by neighbor cells, thereby reducing interference associated with later triggered handoffs. When triggered, the mobile station is handed off to a plurality of neighbor base stations allowing the mobile station to establish simultaneous communication links with two or more neighbor base station.

  • Patent number: 7245919
Abstract: A method of processing, in parallel fashion, messages from a User Equipment (UE) in soft handoff with a plurality of base stations of a wireless communication system. Measurement Messages from the User Equipment are received and stored in a message buffer for a defined period of time. Later arriving messages replace previous messages during the defined period of time. When the defined period of time elapses, the latest stored message is processed in parallel fashion in a processing pipeline with other messages for the UE and other UEs. The latest message is processed by first converting it to soft handoff actions and inserting such actions into a processing pipeline. A conflict table is generated during the parallel processing of the soft handoff actions to avoid the processing of messages that conflict with each other. Conflicting messages are put into a pending state and remain in such state until they are canceled by subsequent messages or the conflict no longer exists.
