The plate member is positioned under the female patient's buttocks when the patient is on the operating table with legs up. The speculum member is inserted into the vagina, and the position of the speculum member is vertically adjusted to a desired fixed position by vertically moving the arm member so that the speculum member will depress the posterior wall of the vagina to facilitate a vaginal procedure or surgery.

Radiation from the IR microscope objective, after being internally reflected at the element/sample interface is either returned to the objective or is directed through the microscope condenser optics with sample information to the detector system for spectral analysis. Alternatively, the beam may bounce off the element/sample interface either once, twice or multiple times at the same angle of incidence, to allow examination of the micro surface of the sample by internal reflectance as well as transmission of the beam through the same sample area. Further, a method to perform external reflectance measurements at different angles of incidence using the described apparatus is discribed.

    Abstract: A new set of mid-Infrared transparent elements with different geometries to enable examination of the sample surfaces by Internal Reflectance Micro Infrared Spectroscopy is disclosed. The Infrared beam from the IR microscope, either collimated or focused, enters the surface of the element and impinges on an inclined surface of contact between the sample and the element at an angle above the critical angle. This IR beam from the microscope operating in the reflectance mode is then internally reflected at the beveled surface cut at a selected angle, travels inside the IR element, reaches a circular reflector surface where it is reflected back to retrace its initial path. The beam once again comes in contact with the sample at the sample and the element interface and is reflected.
