  • Patent number: 6196585
Abstract: In a passenger airbag, a loose portion is provided on a windshield side when an airbag is accommodated into an airbag case. In addition, a tip portion of the airbag is folded or rolled up on the counter-windshield side. As a result, a gas first flows into the loose portion during the deployment of the airbag. Therefore, the airbag starts to deploy from a part on the windshield side, and a portion of the airbag, which has already been inflated with its folded portion being unfolded, comes to contact with the windshield, thereby reducing the pressure applied onto the windshield. The airbag can provide suitable deployment to securely restrain an occupant, and is improved in smooth deployment. The air bag prevents undesirable pressure on the windshield without increasing the cost.

  • Patent number: 6186544
Abstract: An air bag for a front passenger is provided with a loose portion on a windshield side, and after the loose portion is formed, edges of the air bag on the opposite side of the windshield are folded in concavities formed behind the loose portion. Then, the air bag is folded toward the passenger side. Therefore, the air bag starts to deploy from a part on the windshield side to provide suitable deployment to securely restrain an occupant. The air bag can be deployed smoothly, and prevent undesired pressure on the windshield without increasing the cost.

  • Patent number: 6179325
Abstract: An occupant-facing portion 18A of a module cover 18 is divided into flaps 40, 42 defined by the tear lines 30, 32, 34. A sheet switch 50 is disposed in such a manner as to confront only the flap 40. The sheet switch 50 is backed with a backing plate 60. A main portion 62 of the backing plate 60 confronts only the flap 40. The mounting arm 64 extending from the main portion 62 is connected to a retainer 10 and projections 66, 66 projecting from the main portion 62 are engaged with openings 80, 80 of the leg of the module cover. The sheet switch can be actuated by lightly depressing the module cover. The inflator is not required to have large capacity.

  • Patent number: 6173988
Abstract: An airbag device is provided which allows the required strength of a container to be reduced, thus lightening the weight of the container. A holding plate 18 is inserted into an airbag 20 through an opening 24 of the airbag 20. A flange 18b of the holding plate 18 is superposed on a peripheral portion of the opening 24 and stud bolts 22 are inserted through bolt-through holes formed in the peripheral portion of the airbag 20. The stud bolts 22 are further inserted through bolt-through holes 26 formed in the bottom of a container 10. After an inflator 16 is fitted into a housing portion 18a of the holding plate 18 through an opening 12 of the container 10, a mounting bracket 14 is superposed on the bottom of the container 10 and the stud bolts 22 are inserted through bolt-through holes of the mounting bracket 14. Then, nuts 30 are screwed up-onto the bolts 22. After the airbag 20 is folded and accommodated in the container 10, a lid 32 is put on the container 10.
