Publication number: 20110234811Abstract: Improving color calibration, and similar operations, by generating an optimal raw RGB color chart, in the raw RGB domain, for an imaging device with a given type of image sensor, such as for a digital still camera. Calibration is performed in response to a constraint which takes into account the spectral sensitivity of the image sensor used on the camera as well as spectral reflectance and spectral radiance of multiple illuminants. Calibration is performed using the raw RGB color chart which is illuminant independent and image sensor specific and which can match the calibration performance of known calibration standards, such as Macbeth 24.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 26, 2010Publication date: September 29, 2011Applicant: SONY CORPORATIONInventors: Xiaoling Wang, Farhan Baqai, Takami Mizukura, Naoya Katoh

Publication number: 20100231725Abstract: The color calibration using colored rays method achieves illuminant independence in calibrating digital still cameras. A constraint is developed using matrix-vector operations and properties of the Kronecker product. The constraint ensures similar calibration performance between colored rays set and the Macbeth ColorChecker. An optimization scheme using orthogonal non-negative matrix factorization with the new constraint is able to obtain the optimal colored rays set. Then, by acquiring an image of the optimal colored rays set, a camera is able to determine an adjustment matrix for color calibration. Experimental results show that compared to traditional calibration approach for digital still cameras, the colored rays approach gives smaller color error under various evaluation illuminants with only one shot needed.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 16, 2009Publication date: September 16, 2010Applicants: SONY CORPORATION, A JAPANESE CORPORATION, SONY ELECTRONICS INC.Inventors: Xiaoling Wang, Farhan A. Patent number: 7583303Abstract: An imaging device having a hybrid RGBYC color filter using a primary color system RGB filter and a complementary color system YC filter is composed. Four G filters that directly relate to resolution and that is close to a luminance signal that human eyes sense are arrayed in a checker shape so that the number of the G filters is four times larger than the number of filters of each of the other colors. An array shown in FIG. 10A is composed of low resolution rows (G, R, G, and B) and high resolution rows (C, G, Y, and G) that are alternately arrayed in each line. When signals are read if exposure times are varied for individual lines, the signals that are read can easily have a wide dynamic range. An array shown in FIG. 10B has two Gs, a low sensitivity color, and a high sensitivity color in each line and each row. Thus, the luminance difference is small in the horizontal direction and the vertical direction. Thus, the reading method in the array shown in FIG.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2006Date of Patent: September 1, 2009Assignee: Sony CorporationInventors: Takami Mizukura, Naoya Katoh, Kenji Tanaka, Masaya Kinoshita, Yutaka Yoneda, Akira Matsui

Publication number: 20090080004Abstract: A color chart for color calibration of imaging devices that has nearly identical calibration performance as the Macbeth ColorChecker or another set of reference colors, but with substantially fewer color patches. For example, the color chart has similar 2nd order statistical characteristics, auto-correlation matrix and major principal components as the Macbeth ColorChecker. The color chart is developed by applying Orthogonal Non-negative Matrix Factorization (ONMF) to the set of reference colors, using non-negativity and smoothness constraints to achieve physically realizable colors and using orthogonality constraints to obtain similar statistical properties to that of any input set of reflectances including, but not limited to, the Macbeth ColorChecker. Seven colors provide nearly identical calibration performance to that of twenty-four colors in the Macbeth ColorChecker.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 26, 2007Publication date: March 26, 2009Applicants: SONY CORPORATION, SONY ELECTRONICS, INC.Inventors: Xiaoling Wang, Farhan A.
