  • Publication number: 20040154581
Abstract: A compression ignition internal combustion engine comprises a combustion chamber 16 to which air and fuel are supplied, an intake valve 19a for opening and closing a passage between the combustion chamber and an intake port 6 communicating with the combustion chamber, and an exhaust valve 19b for opening and closing a passage between the combustion chamber and an exhaust port 14 communicating with the combustion chamber. The temperature and pressure in the combustion chamber are increased to self-ignite an air-fuel mixture with the compressive operation of a piston after closing of the intake valve 19a. A fuel injection valve 11 injects pressurized air, serving as an ignition trigger factor, directly into the combustion chamber so that the air-fuel mixture under the expansion stroke of the piston is brought into an ignitable state. An ECU 1 controls the injection timing of the pressurized air depending on the ignition timing.

  • Patent number: 6739295
Abstract: It is an object of the present invention to provide a compression ignition internal combustion engine capable of making compatible an increase in compression self-ignition operating area with an optimum output torque control in the operating area and also smoothly switching between a self-ignition combustion and a spark ignition combustion. The compression ignition internal combustion engine operates by switching between the spark ignition combustion using an ignition device and the compression ignition combustion which self-ignites a mixture by piston compression. Variable valve mechanisms vary at least one of the valve timings and valve lifts of an intake valve and an exhaust valve. Intake air is regulated to vary the amount of air intake into a combustion chamber on the upstream side of a combustion chamber inlet of the compression ignition internal combustion engine.

  • Publication number: 20040090276
Abstract: A voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) enabling proper gain adjustment with a simple configuration. The VCO includes a first current source for generating a first control current in accordance with the first control voltage and a second current source for generating a second control current in accordance with the second control voltage. A control voltage generation circuit synthesizes the first and second control currents to generate an oscillation control voltage in accordance with the synthesized current. A ring oscillator generates an oscillation signal with a frequency corresponding to the oscillation control voltage. The first current source varies a changing amount of the first control current relative to a change in the first control voltage. The second current source varies a changing amount of the second control current relative to a change in the second control voltage.

  • Publication number: 20040079322
Abstract: A gasoline engine is provided which is capable of introducing a large amount of EGR gas for performing homogeneous combustion and thus offering a good fuel economy. An external EGR mechanism or an internal EGR mechanism is used to introduce an EGR gas into a combustion chamber (a cylinder). A mixture of fresh air and fuel is thereafter directly injected from a mixture injection valve into the combustion chamber, thereby forming a region of said mixture in an area near an ignition plug. In addition, engine operating parameters are controlled in accordance with the amount of fresh air supplied into the combustion chamber (cylinder) after an intake valve has been closed. This makes possible homogeneous combustion using a large amount of EGR, which eventually increases fuel economy.

  • Patent number: 6722340
Abstract: A fuel injector employed in a direct injection engine comprising a spark plug arranged on the top of a combustion chamber, a fuel injector located on said combustion chamber and an intake air control means installed on an intake manifold. A forward tumble air flow is formed in the combustion chamber by the intake air control means, and the fuel injector is available in two types; an annular (conical) spray type characterized by uniform density and a spray type characterized by high/low density. In the case of latter type, arrangement is made to ensure that the denser portion is placed face-to-face with the spark plug. Spray fuel rises along the wall surface of the combustion chamber on the intake side, and is carried to the spark plug by forward tumble air flow (called “tumble guide”) moving from the fuel injector to the spark plug.

  • Publication number: 20040062161
Abstract: A PLL circuit that optimally generates a clock signal with two reference signals having different frequencies. The PLL circuit includes a VCO for generating the clock signal in accordance with a control voltage. A first loop controls the frequency of the clock signal in accordance with a first reference signal. A second loop controls the phase of the clock signal in accordance with a second reference signal, whose cycle is longer than that of the first reference signal. The second loop supplies the VCO with the control voltage at a constant value until the difference between the frequencies of the first reference and clock signals converges to within a predetermined range. Then, the second loop supplies the VCO with a control voltage at a level corresponding to the difference between the phases of the second reference and clock signals.

  • Publication number: 20040060539
Abstract: In a starting time in which an air motion is little, a means for heightening the motion is added, from the starting time a stratification combustion operation is enabled to carry out, and a discharge of an unburned fuel is minimized. From the starting time of an engine (from the first combustion cylinder) it is possible to carry out a stable stratification combustion. In accordance with the stratification combustion in the exhaust air, a large quantity of the surplus oxygen remains. In the engine in the exhaust stroke twice (two times) fuel injection is carried out and the after-burn phenomenon is caused in the exhaust port and then the exhaust gas temperature can be raised.

  • Patent number: 6702194
Abstract: A combustion chamber is formed using a flat piston having a low cooling loss and therein a forward tumble is generated. A fuel spray is formed by a provision of a splitter which is provided to make off-set from a center of an injection port at a tip end of a tumble atomization system fuel injector. The fuel spray is divided into a fuel spray having a strong penetration force and a fuel spray having a small penetration force. The fuel spray having the strong penetration force is injected in a vicinity of an ignition plug. Accordingly, a fuel adhesion to the piston can be reduced and further a reduction of a discharge HC and a fuel consumption can be improved.

  • Publication number: 20040022144
Abstract: A data recording controller for controlling recording operation of plural pieces of modulated data recorded on a disc medium in units of blocks. The controller includes a modulation circuit for modulating data with a conversion parameter to generate modulated data while updating the conversion parameter for each piece of data. A control circuit stops the recording operation part way through a block in response to a record stop command and starts the recording operation from a record stop position in response to a record start command. A parameter register stores the conversion parameter of the modulated data at the time of stopping the recording operation. The modulation circuit starts modulating data with the conversion parameter stored in the parameter register as an initial value when the recording operation is started. Thus, the recording of data is smoothly restarted without using a link section.

  • Publication number: 20030217733
Abstract: A first object of the invention is to reduce an exhaust gas in a lean burn area which is expanded by a supercharging, in a direct gasoline injection type internal combustion engine provided with a turbocharger. A second object of the invention is to prevent a knocking and a misfire at a time of self ignition combustion. The invention is used for the direct gasoline injection type internal combustion engine provided with the turbocharger. In order to achieve the first object, a combustion mode is switched from a stratified combustion mode to a self ignition combustion mode at a time when a suction pressure of the engine is equal to or more than an atmospheric pressure. Further, in order to achieve the second object, an ignition timing is set to a range between a top dead center and 10 degrees after the top dead center (0 to 10 (ATDC)) at a time of operating an engine in accordance with a self ignition combustion mode.

  • Patent number: 6644270
Abstract: Under a partial load, a pumping loss is reduced by a stratified combustion to enhance a fuel consumption, and during the maximum output operation, the output is increased by a premixture combustion, and the output of an engine is controlled, thereby enhancing the drivability. Under the partial load, an ignition source is provided in the vicinity of a fuel injection valve, and after the fuel is injected, the mixture is ignited, and a resulting flame is caused by a spray of the fuel to spread into a cylinder, thereby effecting a stratified combustion. When the load increases, so that soot and so on are produced in the stratified combustion, the fuel injection is effected a plurality of times in a divided manner, and a premixture is produced within the cylinder by the front-half injection, and a flame, produced by the latter-half injection, is injected into the cylinder to burn this premixture.
