  • Patent number: 8613195
Abstract: Various thermodynamic power-generating cycles employ a mass management system to regulate the pressure and amount of working fluid circulating throughout the working fluid circuits. The mass management systems may have a mass control tank fluidly coupled to the working fluid circuit at one or more strategically-located tie-in points. A heat exchanger coil may be used in conjunction with the mass control tank to regulate the temperature of the fluid within the mass control tank, and thereby determine whether working fluid is either extracted from or injected into the working fluid circuit. Regulating the pressure and amount of working fluid in the working fluid circuit helps selectively increase or decrease the suction pressure of the pump, which can increase system efficiency.

  • Patent number: 8608999
Abstract: A method of fabricating a three-dimensional geometrically complex device is provided, based on a shape memory polymer. The method includes selecting a substrate composed of a shape memory polymer. A filling material is deposited in or on a planar surface of the substrate, thereby forming the device. The planar surface of the substrate may be in either a temporary or original shape of the substrate. Prior to the deposition of the filling material, the substrate is transformed into a first shape having a planar surface if the original shape of the substrate does not have a planar surface. The device is configured to be thermo-mechanically tunable to display a plurality of geometrically complex shapes, under a series of temperature changes and stress.

  • Patent number: 8585848
Abstract: Methods of creating reversible and irreversible wrinkle structures are provided. A shape memory polymer is heated to a transition temperature and cooled while applying a first force. A rigid film layer is secured to the shape memory polymer to form a bilayer. The original shape of the shape memory polymer is recovered to create a first set of wrinkles in the rigid film layer. The bilayer is heated to the transition temperature and a second tensile force is applied to create a second set of wrinkles in the rigid film layer.

  • Publication number: 20130177804
Abstract: Methods for making battery electrode system are disclosed herein. In an example of the method, a mixture of a polymer binder, an active material and a conductive filler is deposited on a current collector. The deposited mixture is exposed to an external field having a field direction that is normal to a surface of the current collector. The exposure aligns, outward from and normal to the surface of the current collector, the active material and the conductive filler to form a plurality of discrete structures that extend outward from and normal to the surface of the current collector and are respectively aligned with a field line of the external field. Each of the plurality of discrete structures includes some of the active material and some of the conductive filler.

  • Publication number: 20130157104
Abstract: A method of reversibly connecting two substrates includes positioning an electrically conductive adhesive connector including a shape memory polymer (SMP) between the substrates, heating the connector to a temperature higher than the SMP transition temperature, applying a load and cooling the connector below the transition temperature to transform the connector to a conforming shape to form an adhesive bond attaching the substrates and providing an electrical connection therebetween. The method may include disconnecting the connector from the substrates by heating the connector above the SMP transition temperature, which may disrupt the electrical connection between the substrates. The connector may be a battery tab connector configured to connect a battery cell to another battery cell or a terminal. The connector may be releasable from the battery tab such that the battery tab is reusable after removal of the connector. The connector may be multi-layer and generally arcuate in a permanent shape.

  • Patent number: 8361368
Abstract: Certain polymer materials, including perfluorosulfonic acid ionomers, have been found to be capable of being deformed from an initial permanent shape into three or more temporary shapes. An article thus formed from such a polymer material may be used initially in a final temporary shape. As the article is progressively heated, the polymer composition reverts successively from its final temporary shape through its intermediate temporary shapes. If a suitable temperature is reached, the original permanent shape is recovered. The article may be devised to serve successive functions in each of its several shapes.
