  • Publication number: 20150275842
Abstract: A starter for an engine is equipped with a planetary gear train as a torque variator to change torque used to start the engine. The torque variator is capable of changing the degree of torque which is transmitted between a planetary carrier and an outer gear of the planetary gear train, thereby changing a ratio of speed of a sun gear to speed of the planetary carrier of the planetary gear train to increase or decrease the degree of torque required to start the engine. This ensures the stability in starting the engine, for example, in cold conditions and achieves a quick start of the engine as needed.

  • Publication number: 20150167613
Abstract: An engine starting apparatus includes a starter and a starter control unit configured to control driving of the starter. The starter control unit operates a motor with a pinion engaged with a ring gear to thereby crank an engine, and de-engage the pinion from the ring gear or de-energize the motor to thereby terminate the cranking of the engine. A cranking time from when cranking of the engine is initiated to when a predetermined engine speed equal to or greater than 450 rpm is reached is equal to or less than an acceptable limit of cranking time that does not provide, to a user of a vehicle, noticeable discomfort caused by cranking noise generated during the cranking of the engine.

  • Patent number: 8793061
Abstract: A control device performs fuel injection without cranking when engine-speed Ne is within a first-range (Ne>N1) and an engine-restart request occurs. The device performs the cranking after the synchronization in rotation-speed between pinion and ring gears, and the gear meshing operation between them when the engine-speed Ne is within a second range (N1?Ne>N2) and the engine-restart request occurs. The device performs the cranking after the gear meshing operation and drives a starter to rotate the pinion gear when the engine-speed Ne is within a third-range (N3?Ne) and the above request occurs. When the above request occurs in an engine restart ready-range (N2?Ne>N3), the control device performs the cranking after the engine-speed Ne is decreased to a value within the third-range (N3?Ne) and after the completion of the gear meshing operation.

  • Publication number: 20140102395
Abstract: An engine starting system for an engine is equipped with a pinion, an electromagnetic actuator, and a controller. When energized, the electromagnetic actuator produces a magnetic attraction to move the pinion straight toward a ring gear coupled to an engine for starting the engine. The controller is designed to selectively provide a small amount of current to the electromagnetic actuator and a large amount of current to the electromagnetic actuator. When it is required to minimize the level of noise arising from mechanical contact of the pinion with the ring gear, the controller provides the small amount of current to the electromagnetic actuator to slow the movement of the pinion toward the ring gear, thereby lessening the impact of the pinion on the ring gear.

  • Patent number: 8510019
Abstract: In a control device, an engine self-restart means tries the engine restart when an engine restart request is issued while the engine rotation speed is within a first rotation speed range. A pre-gear synchronizing control means executes gear rotation speed synchronization between pinion and ring gears, and then retries the engine restart when the engine restart request is issued while the engine rotation-speed is within a second rotation speed range. A pre-gear meshing control means executes gear-meshing between the pinion and ring gears and then retries the engine restart when the engine restart request is issued while the engine rotation speed is within a third rotation speed range. On detecting the engine-restart failure of the engine self-restart control, the control device prohibits the execution of pre-gear synchronizing control until a predetermined time counted form the failure detection time is elapsed, and executes the pre-gear meshing control after the predetermined time period is elapsed.

  • Patent number: 7637245
Abstract: In a system, an actuator is linked to a valve rotatably installed in a passage through which gas flows. The actuator changes torque to be applied to the valve so as to adjust a rotational position of the valve based on a deviation between a current position and a target position. In the system, a first storing unit stores therein a first threshold. The first threshold is defined in a variation range within which a torque parameter is variable depending on change in the torque to be applied to the valve. The first threshold allows whether there is a possibility that an operation of the actuator is unstable. If the torque parameter substantially shifts either to or through the first threshold in the variation range, a restricting unit restricts variation in the torque parameter with the gas-flow being substantially kept through the passage.
