  • Patent number: 11520097
Abstract: A single edge lit lighting module produces bi-lobed light distributions which provide targeted control of light output with peak intensity that is non-normal to the lighting module output face. The compact form factor of module embodiments having narrow width are particularly well-suited for use in linear lighting fixtures for suspended, surface and recessed lighting configurations typically used to illuminate walls, floors and/or ceilings. Embodiments of the single edge lit lighting module utilize reflectors in combination with light guides having volumetric light scattering properties and surface features to control peak intensities, output angles, and shapes of the two light output lobes. A variety of light distributions can be achieved including symmetrical bi-lobed distributions conventionally achieved by double edge lit modules. Further embodiments utilize selective alignment of light guide with reflector to achieve different asymmetric light distributions.

  • Publication number: 20220373144
Abstract: A light fixture delivering electrically controlled lighting distributions for mounting within an installed panel system typically used in ceiling and wall constructions and incorporating acoustic, drywall or wood panels. The light fixture can provide low-glare or wide spread “batwing” ambient light or more directional wall wash, task and accent lighting. The light fixture comprises one or more LED boards and an optical element which can be back-lit or edge-lit. The light fixture body is configurable, comprising a 3-dimensional extruded elongate body with its ends cut at a configured angle. The body typically comprises additional side support features that support and enclose the edge of installed panels. In the case of a T-bar based ceiling grid system the side support features may also replicate the function and appearance of T-bar horizontal and vertical portions. The body comprises features to retain and align LED boards, reflectors and a back-lit or edge-lit optical element.

  • Publication number: 20220364708
Abstract: Disclosed are lighting arrangements that provide, when in operation, more uniform angular light distribution emissions into an environment. The lighting arrangements use LED light sources, a light scattering optical element and partial reflectance from a light transmissive sheet or reflective layer to produce direct and indirect illumination with improved angular light distribution and uniformity onto targeted illumination surfaces such as ceilings, walls, and floors. The present disclosure provides a solution to problems of non-uniform angular distribution of light causing visual discomfort and spatial discontinuity in output. Energy savings are achieved with high optical efficiency utilizing compact, durable, robust, and aesthetically appealing optical composites and lighting arrangements capable of providing an assortment of configurable angular light distributions.

  • Publication number: 20220357006
Abstract: Disclosed is a lighting assembly for providing configured light distributions and illumination patterns by spatial arrangement of at least one light source array with a focal region of a light scattering primary transmissive optical element. Adjustment of light scattering properties can be used to further control light distribution patterns. Embodiments with light source arrays of linear and circular geometry are typical and one or more Fresnel lens patterns can be used to provide one or more focal regions. An optional auxiliary transmissive optical element can provide further control of light distribution and brightness uniformity for improved visual appearance. The lighting assembly can be used to provide a wide range of symmetric and asymmetric lighting distributions for direct or indirect lighting.

  • Publication number: 20220357005
Abstract: Disclosed is a lighting assembly for providing electrically configured light distributions and illumination patterns. The light distributions can be pre-configured and stored in a memory device or adjusted once installed in an environment by use of a wired or wireless controller or control device. The lighting assembly comprises at least one primary transmissive optical element and multiple light sources arranged in two or more independently addressed electrical channels spatially arranged on a common plane of the lighting assembly housing. Each light source channel is both physically separated and electrically adjustable in order to control light input into the optical element and subsequently adjust the light distribution output of the lighting assembly. The lighting assembly can be used to provide a wide range of symmetric and asymmetric lighting distributions for direct or indirect lighting as well as focusing or defocusing a projected beam in a spotlight or downlight configuration.

  • Publication number: 20220342141
Abstract: A single edge lit lighting module is disclosed which produces tailored light distributions valuable in many illumination applications. The lighting module comprises a unique light scattering optical element which is aligned with one or more LED light sources along one of its edges and works in combination with configured reflective surfaces. Light distributions attainable using the invention include, but are not limited to, symmetric and asymmetric bi-lobed “batwing” distributions for wide area direct and indirect lighting, and tilted or asymmetric distributions for perimeter lighting. It is also possible to achieve more rounded and symmetric distributions by an additional diffuser as a cover lens. The invention's unique single edge lit construction provides the means for achieving the lighting distributions without the need for conventional two lit edges and within a compact form factor with narrow width.

  • Publication number: 20220333765
Abstract: A configurable lighting assembly for use in suspended ceiling grid systems which provides novel T-Bar mounting options. The lighting assembly comprises two configurable length linear lighting modules in a novel parallel arrangement. End plates support, and enclose longitudinal ends of the elongate body of each linear lighting modules and are used to set a configured width and functional gap spacing of the linear lighting modules. The end plates further connect and support the lighting assembly when fixed or mounted or removably to T-Bars positioned at either or both perpendicular and parallel alignment angles. Lighting assemblies with various embodiments of end plates and linear lighting modules are presented, each with novel mounting characteristics. In some cases the lighting assembly mounts perpendicularly on its end and spans the gap between two T-Bars. In other cases the lighting assembly mounts longitudinally on a single T-Bar.

  • Publication number: 20220283355
Abstract: An optical element and lighting module are provided with increased light output, uniformity of brightness and color, and controlled lighting distributions. The optical element functions simultaneously as an outcoupling TIR light guide and a direct throughput lens. Additionally, areas typically dedicated to bezels or edge reflectors can be greatly reduced or eliminated due to decreased hotspotting to provide a fixture face with a very high percentage of light emitting area. It provides typical benefits of an edge-lit light guide design including thin forms and shallow depth, extended emitting area, and single or dual peak off axis light distributions particularly useful in applications such as indirect illumination of ceilings, wall washing, aisle lighting, exterior facade lighting and area lighting as well as other lighting applications. Embodiments are described for direct, indirect, and direct:indirect illumination in recessed, surface and suspended fixture configurations.

  • Publication number: 20220196906
Abstract: Light fixture embodiments for direct downlighting applications provide benefits of low overall fixture profile height, increased light output, enhanced uniformity of brightness and color by use of novel edge-lit optical elements that functions simultaneously as a diffuser and direct throughput lens, as well as an outcoupling TIR light guide. The light fixture can provide low-glare ambient light or more directional wall wash, task and accent lighting. The light fixture typically comprises a 3-dimensional extruded linear support body which retains and aligns LED boards, reflectors and edge-lit optical elements, such as a diffuser or light guide. The edge-lit design enables the height of the lighting assembly body to be equivalent to or less than the height of T-bar main beams or cross tees. This is very important in applications where there is zero or little available plenum space above the ceiling grid.
